Yahoo! Messenger 3.0b1 (Mac OS X)

Very slick.

Took a while, but this version is spectacular. Can't wait for voice support in the next beta! [alert admin]

DivX for Mac 6.5 (Mac OS X)

Froze, unable to play any movies

Upgraded from 6.0.2 to 6.5, and now unable to play any movies. Browser plug-in freezes Safari so that it must be force-quit. Perhaps they should have stuck with letting the thing play through the QuickTime plug-in and player, rather than building their own. In any event, it's quite surprising that this was released in this unfinished state. [alert admin]

Adobe Reader 7.0.0 (Mac OS X)

A truly first-class job

Spectacular rebound after the sluggish -- and essentially useless, given Preview's competence -- 6.0 release. 7.0 is fast, attractive, and the browser plug-in allows you to fill in and submit Web PDF forms at last! Kudos should still go to SchubertIT and their PDF browser plug-in for the amazing way they stepped up to the plate during Adobe's two years in the wilderness. But Reader 7 (both the plug-in and the app itself) is much more feature-rich. [alert admin]

Epson TWAIN & Scan Utility 2.34A (Mac OS X)

Finally, a version that works

At last, version 2.34A allows Epson's scanners to be recognized by Image Capture and shared over a network. OCR programs such as OmniPage Pro X also recognize my Epson 3170 and my Epson 1240 for the first time. The scanning feature set is good. It took way too long, but I'm glad to see Epson releasing a good OS X driver at last. Be sure to restart after installing it, before you try to use the scanner. [alert admin]

Chat Client 7.9 (Mac OS X)

Useful app

Much more stable than Java-based chat, responsive developer, reasonable price. The interface is a bit confusing and unattractive, bu featres are almost always at parity with the Windows version. A useful app. [alert admin]

Plain Text Editor 1.7 (Mac OS X)

Not worth trying

Various other free text editing applications (such as TextEdit and BBEdit Lite) have more features and are easier to use than this $10 shareware app. It's not immediately clear why the author even wrote it, nor why anyone would choose to use it. [alert admin]

Canon PowerShot ImageBrowser 3.5.2r2 (Mac OS X)

Some features don't work

The program installed without any problems under Mac OS X 10.3.2. However, the integrated Remote Capture function does not work -- it launches Virex instead. While this may be due to corruption on my machine, it is puzzling that it launches another program at all: Canon says in the docs that the whole point of the integration was to do away with the standalone version of Remote Capture. Standalone Remote Capture 2.7.3 works as expected. In addition, the program occasionally can't see my camera, even when attached and powered up. Seems a bit buggy compared to earlier versions. SpamSieve 1.3 (Mac OS X)

Not a bad…

program. Installation is a bit crude, and one would wish for somewhat better integration with various e-mail programs. The problem with built-in spam tools such as Entourage's (which I used to use) is that their effectiveness varies wildly depending upon the type of spam one receives. Entourage only achieved about a 75% success rate on the 250 or more spam messages I receive per day, whereas SpamSieve is running at about 92% so far. Now if only it could be better integrated. Also seems a bit overpriced: $15 would seem fairer. [alert admin]

Many Java-based Web…

chat sites still don't work, crashing whatever browser is used to load them. Apple should refrain from calling OS X "the best place to deploy Java applications" when in fact large numbers of applets won't run, and those that do are markedly slower than on other platforms. [alert admin]

About on par with a PS1 game

Just so no one has any preconceived notions about what this is, it's about at the level of an original PlayStation 1 game. Check out the screen shots to see what I mean: http://www.ambrosiasw.com/forums/index.php?automodule=gallery&req=si&img=1142 Even so, the frame rate is still inconsistent, even on a Mac with a dedicated graphics card. This is in no way on par with current generation commercial Mac or console games, and it's certainly not worth $25.

Attacks are bad; v.3.0.1 is good

I think the Wikipedia authors did a darn good job explaining what malware is. ;^> I'm disappointed by your description of my comment as "attacking." It sure doesn't read that way to me! If anything, accusing Yahoo! of producing malware (a very specific, mostly illegal type of software) because you find their product buggy is an attack. But I prefer to believe you just used the term inappropriately, and weren't intending to be malicious. And you're right…

MALWARE

Assuming you know what malware is (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malware), calling this release malware because you find it to be buggy is inappropriate. That being said, Yahoo! quickly released a v.3.0.1 which should solve the bugs users are noting here. Let's hope so, rather than resorting to spreading FUD by hyperbole.

Arlo, not Aaron--and he's still in charge!

His name is actually Arlo Rose, not Aaron. :^> And he's still very much leading the design of Yahoo! Widgets from his new post at Yahoo! Here's hoping the 3.0.1 release solves most Mac users' problems....
