CatDV Pro X 7.0b17 (Mac OS X)
Still one of the best catalogue programs, print options need improvements
Everything has nicely evolved although some features have reached a "saturated" level (how many filters, groups and bins to you need to get your stuff sorted..?). The only feature which still needs some work are the printing options which are rather poor since V2 with rather limited customization possibilities. [alert admin]

Bento 1.0.0.4 (Mac OS X)
Finally a FM-lite with full Mac Integration
as a passionate FM user I was always annoyed by the poor integration of FileMaker with OSX. So I want a project database but I need to duplicate the Mac Addressbook in FM and work with that, same for dates, events etc. Now here is the "logical" step but it stop somewhat too early. So you got all your data nicely combined in a table, a form.. but then what are *doing* with it??? -> no buttons "send e-mail" "print phone numer in large" ... next to an address entry" -> no button "open" next to a file reference -> no context menu next to event like "show this in iCal" So if this one way road approach is a little bit modified I would probably buy the product as FM is often an overkill. Tasty 1.5b (Mac OS X)
Dont use this piece of software! Not only that bookmarks lists are rather simple, the programmer even "forgot" the close or cancel button on the Ma.gnolia window so you need to force quit the application to exit here!! [alert admin]

XHub Media Center 2.0.1 (Mac OS X)
Yet another Frontrow clone...? ![]()

When I bought my MacMini as my first attempt to get a "Media Center" in my living room I was quite disappointed about Frontrow: (too) simple navigation, no internet video streams other than movie trailers etc... Looking at various alternatives like Media Central and now Xhub I got to say: Apple is not that bad in a relative sense. Most of the competitors are not beyond alpha-beta releases. Xhub is surprisingly stable for its age but the delta to Frontrow is (right now) rather minor. RSS Feeds and a build in Webbrowser are a nice and innovative idea but thats about it - the usual simple setup to watch stored movies from HD or DVD or to listen to iTunes songs. No clever idea how to effectively navigate thru a >1000 songs iTunes collection (There must be more clever ideas than just selecting playlists!) I will watch the evolution of this program but for now there is no real reason to abandon Frontrow. [alert admin]

VLC media player 0.8.6c (Mac OS X)
I am surprised that this high rated piece of software appears to get more and more unstable with each new release. The latest 0.8.6c (I am always amused about the madness of version numbering for amateur software;-) crashed with formats like .m2t or .wmv. If I only can play QT compatible formats I might rather stay with the Apple quicktime player :-( [alert admin]

Road Trip Effect 2.5.4 (Mac OS X)
Nice programm but with the wrong name ![]()

.. its actually more for airplane rather than roadtrips as individual legs can only be straigt lines. Maybe I expect too much for 25$ but the options of the animation are rather limited: - no control over fade in/out of text labels - they appear and disappear in a fixed pattern. - no bezier curves Otherwise its easy to understand and stable. GraphicConverter X 5.9.2 (Mac OS X)
... there is a noticeable lack of really innovative features in latest version. I am still happily working with 5.6 and don't miss anything really important. Good for a user, bad for a developer :-) Although there would be rooms for improvement. In particular the GUI should have an overhaul because too many functions are distributed over buttons and menues. Particular bad is the overloaded right-click context menue with more than 15 functions from GC alone plus OS wide entries! In V5.6 and later there is a nagging question whether I want even more CM entries and even if I select "No" GC is asking again and again... :-( Sometimes the little things make a good product better..... Cheers, Emilia [alert admin]

You Control: Desktops 1.2 (Mac OS X)
The delta to the free "virtual Desktop Manager" is not worth a 30$ prizetag. Anyway it will be superseded by OSX 10.5 in a few months. However the auto-switching of Desktops depending on the front application is very elegant and actually *works* in contrast to virtual Desktop! [alert admin]

MediaCentral 2.0.1 (Mac OS X)
MediaCentral maybe a Universal Binary - RealPlayer is not, Windows Mediaplayer is not. As most media content is accessed via these players there is a rather limited choice in MediaCentral. Trying to use Rosetta did not help all the time. Further on there were some crashes which indicates to me that V2 is still in beta... [alert admin]

Eudora 6.2.3 (Mac OS X)
I just came out of a extensive review and trade-off analysis whether I should abandon Eudora due to its know deficencies. I compared to Thunderbird and Apple Mail which are good products but in the end I decided to stay with Eudora: - its the only mail client which renders *all* quicktime and PDF files within the message! As I get a lot of PDF attachements I can quickly browse the PDF without the need to detach it first - very handy. - its the only client with a *really* flexible toolbar. TB and Apple Mail have Toolbars too but only a few commands or macros can be placed there. I have about 40 mailfolders but I only need quick access to about 10 of them at a time. So define 10 toolbar buttons for only these boxes and off you go. - it integrates with Apples Addressbook, Thunderbird comes with (yet another) Addresslist. - its scriptable - I can use it on PC *and* Mac with a simple sync of mbox files. You maybe right with your special setup of 3 machines and NASD but for the "normal" user Synchronize Pro is still much easier to handle and superfast! Dont forget this software does syncs *and* backup while QRecall uses its own proprietary archive format.

Yes, I noticed that. However my intention is to use a Media Center with a remote control, not a keyboard. Its a tricky task to get navigation swift and easy with only six buttons, I know! I am sorry for the multiple postings. This was due to network problems. I noticed the Admins but they do not react...?

I think you got it anyway - it *combines* features and as with many other applications this is often the better way for effective working rather than collecting 599 different Utilities in my Application folder. This "Mosaic" stuff is an unnecessary gimmick, developers should focus on a good catalogue and database programm.
