Symantec Norton Utilities 8.0.1 (Mac OS X)

The second "adding Panther support" upgrade to wreck my 10.2.8 system/software in the past month. Sloppy. Inexcusable (only if this were a one person shareware outfit would I cut them a break--and, ironically, those folks seem to have been day-and-date with their functional Panther updates). The other installer's manufacturer finally acknowledged that the Panther updater would corrupt/crash pre 10.3 systems. Let's see if Norton fesses up to issues with this update. Their update/upgrade program has been horrifically overpriced, but up until OS X, at least the stuff worked... I've used Norton Utilities since the mid-90s. I'm now considering a full abandonment of their software...it seems Symantec has done all but that. If I could just have rock-solid 10.2/10.3 defrag and disk management under one app, I'll be happy. Hell, the Windows folks are right--this stuff should be included in the OS itself! [alert admin]

I've been anxiously awaiting a new update to the MacAlly software/drivers for months now...I'd talked to their tech support about issues w/ 'auto-centering', plus the need for Panther support, of course. Be patient, I was told, 'we're aware of the issues and we're working on it'...oh, and 'if you can't wait, we recommend USB Overdrive.' Well, I did an install of the new 1.01 software and for the first time EVER, an installer killed my system. It locked up in the reboot cycle and it took two hours and the assistance of two patient engineers here at my office to go through single-user terminal proceedures to delete files, repair permissions and get my TiBook to live again (running 10.2.8--thought I'd get things prepped for Panther, oh no!). In short--Danger! Do not assume backwards compatibility w/ this driver install! A shame, the control bad is very nice. The software and support sucks. They really need to crack the whip and demand their programmer(s) product good product. [alert admin]

USB Overdrive 10.3 (Mac OS X)
iShock II/Unreal Tournament w/ USB Overdrive, anyone?
I was told by MacAlly support to dump their own software in the short term and use USB Overdrive to use my iShock II usb controller with an app (like Unreal Tournament) that needs proper re-centering on the joysticks. I've tried myself w/ no real success to get the USB overdrive to config and work properly with Unreal Tourney 2003 (in both mouse and joystick mode), I've llooked everywhere on the MacSoft and MacAlly site and nobody has setups to swap or proceedures to recommend. Can anyone out there help? I want to use this highly recommended software--but it's gotta work for my needs. Respond here or direct e-mail shane.walker@att.net [alert admin]

this update is for, but after installing the 5.1.1 on my OS 9.1 system (updating Toast Ti 5.0.2), it brought the entire thing down. I went back to 5.0.2. Maybe it's because I have a legacy G3? Somebody with specifics, maybe a WARNING TO OLDER MAC USERS. [alert admin]

Combustion 2.0 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
in very late-in-the-game beta testing on this product, and if they truly worked out the bevy of issues still at play when the cycle closed, it will rock! I work in a mixed-platform environment (Mac, NT, SGI) and the Mac lagged in terms of OpenGL support, which C2 leans HEAVILY on...but running in OS X is supposed to help on several fronts. I ordered my copy today...$750 upgrade from 1.0 at Toolfarm, $3495 for a new seat. But decide/buy fast, because prices are going up, i.e. $5K in February! My biggest complaint...since it's 3-D space is handled differently than After Effect, some of most powerful/useful AE plug-ins (think Maya Paint Effects and Zaxwerks 3-D invigorator) won't work. I hope that's a huge, "won't work YET," but we'll see. [alert admin]

Adobe Illustrator 10.0 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
to the new version being faster or slower...but several legacy plug-ins refuse to work in 10 that worked fine in 9.0.2, particularly Vector Effects, without which I find my Illustrator design effectiveness is crippled. Anybody else found this issue...Corel is unreachable (bought VE and don't support it well), any workarounds? Adobe isn't saying much. [alert admin]

What OS are you running 8.0.1 on? I suspect Panther, or am I wrong. I was running 8.0 without issue under 10.2.8...but that's not what we're supposed to be discussing here--the current update as advertised should work on all OS 10.2+ systems and I can vouch it does not.

Hey Ted, You work for Symantec? If not, why do you care if the app's rating goes down when your setup might not be affected by this update but those of us posting feel the duty to warn those that might be (i.e. you say you installed on a Panther system, I was warning pre-10.3 users that the software update might corrupt their app under any OS but Panther). Your not helping, your…
