SteerMouse 3.7 (Mac OS X)

Close to right

This has been the closest replacement I have found for USB Overdrive, reasons might be obvious. Apart from an obvious weird default on MightyMouse button settings which had to be changed. I found it to suitably provide useful mouse tracking adjustments for both speed and resolution. It even got close to how I had it in USB for other mice, a little more time would get that right. BUT... The software seems to have introduced a slight lag to my system and every now and then a button wont engage or will remain stuck on. I use Maya quite a bit and Option + (the three buttons in various combos) provides scene navigation. Fo example, having the centre button not engage or remain stuck on, results in either not being able to pan in a scene or as the later, only be able to pan when I'm actually wanting to zoom or rotate the scene... Button mashing seems to fix this, but isn't productive and leaves me feeling very frustrated. [alert admin]

MouseZoom 2.2 (Mac OS X)

Kinda does, kinda doesn't....

Does what it does well enough. But my complaint with it is similar to the one I have with Apples built in adjustments. 1... Apples. Not enough speed increase, especially with higher resolution displays and laser resolutions their maximum just isn't enough. One thing I hate if pushing a mouse around all day/night. MouseZoom fixes this nicely. 2... MouseZoom's. Not adjustment for the speed/DPI ratio. This is also missing from apples adjustments. I find MouseZooms lack of this feature to be just as frustrating as Apples. I don't like to have much change in speed as I move the mouse. I like to mostly have a direct ratio. My mind expects it to be where I move it. But I find that as my speed changes in physical movement the mouse ends up short of it's mark and I have to push further until I get there. This is as bad as the movement speed being too slow. As a result I have the speed higher than I want to try and compensate and now I overshoot the target. I just can't find a balance. NOTE: USB Overdrive was a old favourite of mine as it did really well. Until I bought an Apple BT Mighty Mouse, which it doesn't support at all as far as I can figure. [alert admin]

BitTorrent 4.27.2 (Mac OS X)

Not so good

Not so good, but what options do we have, they are all bad in some way. I find the failing links to be a problem. This is the nature of the P2P network, but this software seems to fail when a link dies. Starts like this. A bunch of weird error message come up with no real useful option except to notify me. But they also seem to stall the application and all the connections while it waits for a response. Now since I only use the app when I'm not at the machine I'm not there to respond. Most of the time I come back to find it all silent and much of the time it will crash when I quit... [alert admin]

Bits on Wheels 1.0.6 (Mac OS X)

Bit Unreliable (pardon the pun)

Seems a bit unreliable at times. Often freezes up when its not the centre of attention, i.e. when it's in the background... or left unattended at times.

Parts of the information interface are a bit cluttered. Its good to have all that information so handy, but sometimes I just want the simple stuff really clear. Not much choice in setting what I want to see in view preferences etc.

The graphic wheel is addictive to watch. But I think reliability comes first.. [alert admin]

WMA Convert???

It wouldn't touch my WMA files... No help provided so what gives? I'm not impressed as it sounds like an app that I really want sitting on my HD. I still recomend it though. [alert admin]

Windows Media Player X 7.1.3 (Mac OS X)

I'm Not Surprised...

Well since OS X 10.1 I havn't got any version to fully start up. Back when it did, it didn't open anything I couldn't open with any software that was PROVIDED with OS X standard no questions asked! I used to keep on the drive to try as a last resort when I ended up with a file that I couldn't get running. But you know what? It was never handy. Keep up the BAD work MS (Bill Gates) because I don't want your kind around here. [alert admin]

Why would anyone use this?

Because some people use 10.4 And in my case I'm going to upgrade some older machines to leopard and want to make sure I can put back if install has failed as it has happened in the past. Was a major hassle. This time i want to be a bit better off.
