CNET TechTracker app 1.0 beta 2 (Mac OS X)
Lists the wrong versions, and downloads the previous app ![]()

This needs serious reworking. It scans your machine (probably receipts?) and lists old versions of many applications. Then when you click to download the update, it will download the application above the one you click on. Tried it only on Safari 4.0.3; maybe it works in Firefox? [alert admin]

ClickToFlash 1.5.3b4 (Mac OS X)
Works fine in Safari, but not so well in Firefox
Effectively blocks annoying Flash in Safari. However in Firefox, after I enabled it in one Tab, it became ineffective in all other tabs, even after I killed and restarted Firefox (3.5.3). Developers, please take note! [alert admin]

Skim 1.2.6 (Mac OS X)
Still the best PDF-reader around! ![]()

In spite of the new features of Preview in 10.6, some of which must have been inspired by Skim, Skim is and remains by far the superior PDF-reader around! And in distinction from the new Preview (which crashed twice in the 18 hours I have it), Skim never crashes, dutifully updates itself and reopens where you left off. It is not only for scientific papers! [alert admin]

Stanza 1.0.0b17 (Mac OS X)
Not much to read either. PDF files look better in Skim. On the iPhone there is more stuff available. [alert admin]

Apple iPhone 3.0.1 (Mac OS X)
Easy upgrade. Did not resolve "phantom Podcast" and "phantom email addresses" problems ![]()

The upgrade went as expected. Apparently all that Apple fixed is the SMS vulnerability. I had hoped they would fix the recurring "phantom podcasts" (i.e., after deleting podcasts, their images keep reappearing though their sound or video files are gone), or "phantom e-mails": the fact that erased e-mail addresses appear in the To: (or Bcc:) entries when you type a letter. So we'll have to wait for 3.0.2 and the next iTunes ... (iPhone 3GS 16 GB, Mac OS 10.5.7, iTunes 8.2.1 (6), iMac 2.93 GHz) [alert admin]

Does not handle PDF. Java and Flash do not work ![]()

I have not checked on other mime types yet, but its inability to handle PDF (or at least give you the option to send PDF-files to Skim), makes it pretty useless. For the moment I'll stick with Safari. In addition, Java (which works fine on Safari and Firefox) does not work either and neither does Flash. [alert admin]

Epsilon 13.07 (Mac OS X)
Why pay $250 for a product meant for old Macs, when Aquamacs is free?
Aquamacs is a full implementation of Emacs, with a nice Mac OS X interface, and it's free. Epsilon played its role in the old days, when RMS vetoed Emacsen for the Mac ... [alert admin]

VirtualBox 3.0.2 (Mac OS X)
Trouble running Ubuntu-9.0.4 in VB 3.0.2, vs. VMware Fusion
I installed Ubuntu Linux 9.0.4 in the previous version of Virtual Box. (I also tried installing Windows XP SP2, but it would not accept my code, so I gave up on Windows, which I don't use anyway; just wanted to see if it works). Ubuntu starts up alright, but because of VB's weird handling of the mouse (I have a USB mouse), there is no way of being able to enlarge the screen. I addition Ubuntu usually freezes half-way during a software update. By comparison, VMWare Fusion Version 2.0.5 runs Ubuntu 9.0.4 flawlessly, allows a full-screen mode and interacts perfectly with the OSX 10.5.7 Spaces, so the transition to the Mac is painless. It also seems to make better use of the graphics processor. My iMac is the 2.93 GHz 24 inch model with the NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 graphics processor. Windows or Solaris users may have a better experience with VB, and the fact that it is free and open-source makes it very attractive. I hope Sun will continue supporting it after it is swallowed by Oracle. [alert admin]

The best thing about iWork is actually Keynote. Works better than Powerpoint or the presentation software in OpenOffice.org. For editing nothing beats OpenOffice.org/NeoOffice (prose) and TeXshop (or the other LaTeX-guis, for scientific publishing).

Codetek was essentially put out of business by "Spaces." I was great on the old PPC macs, but did not work on the X86 machines. They were very helpful as long as they lasted ...

Looks Great on Paper, BUT.....
That review was from 2007 -- so it does not apply to this update anyway. VT must have misplaced it on this page!

This is great, downloads YouTube videos!
Yes, but it should ask you whether you want huge files downloaded. It should not install itself as a default player without asking you, and almost Windows-like, hides the files and makes symbolic links.

Not Apple's best implementation...
If you move an application to a nonstandard place, how do you want the updater to find it. Best advice: if you moc=ve it,make a symlink to the original location!

Why don't you guys/gals switch to NeoOffice/OpenOffice.org?
If there are so may complaints about MS Office, why not just switch to NeoOffice or OpenOffice.org, which works perfectly?
