Apple Mac OS X 10.5.3 (Mac OS X)
I updated (from the same combo updater) three machines (a 2.16 GHz iMac, both on the internal hard disk, and an external FW "emergency" disk, and a 2.16 GHz Macbook). Permission repair is considerably faster (after it finishes reading the permissions database). The only wrong group was on cups. Otherwise everything looks fine. [alert admin]

OpenOffice.org 2.4.0 (Mac OS X)
Beta version of OOo 3.0 Aqua is now available
I have just downloaded the beta version of OOo 3.0 (macnative,i.e., without X11) and am quite impressed (sic)! It is somewhat faster than NeoOffice, and passed all my torture-tests. See: http://marketing.openoffice.org/3.0/announcementbeta.html [alert admin]

Adobe Reader 8.1.2 (Mac OS X)
Why bother with Adobe Reader if Skim is so much better
For all who are unhappy with the Adobe reader: Have you tried Skim? I wouldn't read a PDF-file without it! [alert admin]

iPlayMusic 2.0.5 (Mac OS X)
Not really freeware, just a portal to a store with some freebies
This application takes you to their store, where they have a few free videos, but most of the stuff is not free. This should be mentioned in the software description. In addition, it installs a package, and I am not sure that just moving the application to the trash deletes everything it installed. It would be preferabe if one could just copy the app into the Apprlications folder! [alert admin]

You Control: Desktops 1.3 b5 (Mac OS X)
Is it worth spending thirty bucks when you have Spaces in 10.5?
I used this software on Intel before 10.5 and it worked nicely, but is there a point spending an extra thirty bucks for it if you are running 10.5 and can use Spaces? It is true that Spaces misses a few of the nice features of Desktops, like being able to have a different wallpaper on each virtual desktop or naming them. On the other hand, Spaces is more stable, has easy shortcuts and interacts nicely with the Apple mouse. Maybe the "You Control" developers should concentrate on enhancing Spaces before Apple adopts their features. [alert admin]

Apple Numbers 1.0.1 (Mac OS X)

I don't know why Apple needed this, since it is incompattible with the Open Document format, and even fails to import some older .xls file. OpenOffice.org (under X11) or NeoOffice are faster and read all files. [alert admin]

As previously noted, the distribution still creates a folder with the version number, so when moved, e.g., to the ~/Applications subdirectory it still does not overwrite the older version, and thus requires making a new link into the Dock. Otherwise it is probably the best programming environment, which both my 11-year-old grandson and any experienced Lisp/Scheme programmer can enjoy on any platform. [alert admin]

I have been using skim for all my pdf-needs (except LaTeX processing with TeXshop), when compared to Adobe Reader, Preview.app, or Xpdf. In addition to being able to attach and save notes, highlights, etc, its search function is quicker, and when you click on a reference in an article, rather than taking you there, it displays the refeeence in a box. I can highly recommend it, particularly for people reading scientific article or books in PDF. [alert admin]

AOL Radio 1.2b1 (Mac OS X)
Beware: Works only for AOL subscribers!
I wasted a few minutes downloading and installing this. In the system requirements the do not state that an AOL subscription is required. [alert admin]

Not Apple's best implementation...
If you move an application to a nonstandard place, how do you want the updater to find it. Best advice: if you moc=ve it,make a symlink to the original location!

Why don't you guys/gals switch to NeoOffice/OpenOffice.org?
If there are so may complaints about MS Office, why not just switch to NeoOffice or OpenOffice.org, which works perfectly?

Actually OpenOffice.org is not really broken apart. There are just different startup scripts for writer, calc, etc. AFAIK Neooffice is just Openoffice with a nicer Java interface in place of the X11 interface

Since this is essentially a user-friendly front end to a shell script using hdiutil, it should not be hard to do this "by hand" in a terminal. For detailed instructions, open a terminal and type "man hdiutil."
