Apple Boot Camp 1.0 Beta 1 (Mac OS X)
This is an incredible development - clean, simple, and effective.
The fact that all the XP drivers (except for the iSight) are fully functional is particularly noteworthy - I've seen Windows-only manufacturers who cannot provide working drivers for their products for months after they are offered for sale.
For people worrying about virii - don't panic. It is extremely unlikely that a Windows virus could propagate to the Mac side of things. Furthermore, it isn't that difficult to prevent infections on Windows - keep the OS and antimalware up to date, use Firefox instead of Internet Explorer, don't run untrusted software, and things will most likely be fine.
For people who can't see why one would want to run Windows on a Mac, I would remind them that there exist numerous software programs without OS X equivalents (not just games) that are essential to people carrying out their jobs. Furthermore, contrary to myth, many of these Windows programs are well-designed and written. It'll be great to be able to run them without having to resort to the cost and headaches associated with maintaining separate Windows machines.
Hopefully, the next stage will be a full-fledged virtualization solution…

Grokker 2.4 (Mac OS X)
Grokker seems to be beset by some of the most malicious and uninformed reviews I have seen on Versiontracker.
- Yes, this is a Java app.
- No, it has not been fully "Cocoaized", so that look and feel (including the install process) are not particularly Mac-like.
- However, the interface is perfectly clean, clear and functional.
Most importantly, what this application does - organize search results into categorized graphs - is unbelievably useful if your work depends upon heavy search engine use. My recommendation: pay no attention to the naysayers and give Grokker a shot - you might find you like it. [alert admin]

_You_ may want all apps to combine into MegaloOffice 1TB Edition - me, I prefer smart, compact, small multiple apps that I can combine any way I want. Yojimbo looks to be a very nice app of the latter type.

I suspect what you are referring to is a wordprocessor, not a programming editor - if I'm wrong about this, I'll second the recommendation for TextWrangler (much faster and better designed than jEdit).
Your friend might start by seeing whether TextEdit (included for free with OS X) does everything they need it to do - it only includes basic features, but frequently that is all that is needed by many people.
Should they need a more…

Your complaints refer to a version of Grokker that is almost a year old, and provide the reader with no way to verify them - I've certainly never run into the issue you mention with any version of Grokker.

Tabaks, your comment is a perfect example of the attitude I was referring to. Your complaints refer to a previous version that is almost a year old, and provide the reader with no way to verify them - I've certainly never run into the issue you mention with any version of Grokker.
