Sound Menu 1.5.1 (Mac OS X)
This is a very useful utility, because I leave my headset for Skype plugged in all the time, want the sound through my USB headset when using Skype but through the internal speakers otherwise. This easy-to-access menu utility lets me switch the sound output (and input) without opening up the Sound preferences, so it is very handy. doug [alert admin]

Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0rc1 (Mac OS X)
v2 still missing basic features found in all other email apps ![]()

I *want* to like ThunderBird. I think having choice for email apps is important. But even as the years go by ThunderBird is still missing some very basic features you see in ALL other email apps. In particular: 1. You can't simply select text and reply and have your selected text "quoted". 2. Most annoyingly, you can't easily find replies! There is a little "reply" icon in email listings after you reply, but clicking on it just brings up the email itself, not the reply. I notice on the Mozilla "bugs" list that item (1) has been a frequently requested feature since 2000! doug [alert admin]

iText for Windows 3.1.6 (Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000)
The best editor for my needs so far ![]()

I have to admit, I quite like iText. I am mainly a Mac user, but had to get a Windows machine for testing. I tried various other text editors and found them sort of clunky. And none of the others really worked well with multiple languages. But iText is fast and snappy, clean in appearance, works well with English and Japanese and at least people like me, who like the feel and nice design of Mac programs, will really like iText. I find myself using it all the time now if I happen to be in Windows. Doug Lerner [alert admin]

There are an extensive number of preferences to set and it is extremely flexible. The developer provides excellent responses to issues too. Japanese support is also much better than in Mail.app. I have a whole host of recommended enhancements :) but I like the fact that I can communicate with the developer and have already bought a license and found it trivially easy to switch over from Mail.app. Highly recommended. doug [alert admin]

NutCase Binhex 0.9 (Mac OS X)
Dropping a file onto the app opens up the window that says drop a file onto this window. Dropping a file onto the window does nothing. Anybody know any other binhex converters? Thanks, doug [alert admin]

LimeWire X 3.6.15 (Mac OS X)
I am using it for the first time, and it seems to have installed and worked perfectly. The search seems great. And downloads worked fine too. doug [alert admin]

Michael Tsai was very cooperative in helping me get over an Entourage settings problem (the mailing list manager was interfering with correct operations) and now it is working great. I am spam free for the first time in memory. Wonderful product. I highly recommend it! doug [alert admin]

MailSwitch 2.0.0 (Mac OS X)
How do you switch address books
This is a great idea. I can't figure out how to switch address books though. How does that work? I use Entourage, and wanted to at least give Mail.app a try, but not having multiple identity support was a real show stopper for me. This is somewhat alleviated, of course, by fast user switching. But a utility like this would be even easier. I'm not sure I prefer Mail.app over Entourage yet though. I imported mailboxes from an Entourage identity and Mail.app crashed in the middle of the import. Also, most of my friend's emails got marked as "junk". And there are quite a lot of places in message lists where Japanese is not showing up correctly. Of course none of those issues are MailSwitch's fault. :) doug [alert admin]

but it failed my very first test: (1) set the preferences to overwrite on upload and download, (2) uploaded a file, (3) tried to download the same file to the original location and got a "could not create file error occurred" error. Repeated tries resulted in the same error. doug [alert admin]
