PithHelmet 2.8.5 (Mac OS X)
What the developer says about PH in Snow Leopard
Folks,
Here's what the developer himself says:
http://culater.net/software/PithHelmet/PithHelmet.php
PH "sort of works" when Safari is in 32-bit mode. He's working on a 64-bit solution, but is "having a lot of trouble." [alert admin]

PithHelmet 2.8.4 (Mac OS X)
I've used PH for years, and have paid the shareware fee. It was a godsend at first, blocking lots of unwanted junk. However, support for this product has deteriorated significantly in the last year or two:
* Bugs are not being fixed (I've reported one several times).
* Updates (or, rather, lack thereof) do not keep up with Safari versions.
I realize that this is shareware. However, I *did* pay the fee that the developer requested. I'd pay more, if i were confident that the quality and support would return to their previous levels. [alert admin]

OnyX 1.9.6 (Mac OS X)
Beware of VT's star averages ("This version" and "All Time")
The averages can be seriously biased by uninformed reviews, such as the one recently posted for Onyx. This is especially true for newly released products or versions, when there are not many reviews.
It is important to read the reviews, to make sure that they raise pertinent issues. [alert admin]

Microsoft Office 2008 12.1.1 (Mac OS X)
I'm sure that this has been reported before, but just in case ...
* MathType does not work in Office 2008. The MT developers say they're are working on a solution, (3rd q 2008, they say) but until then I'm staying with 2004. If you do anything but the dumbest equation editing, you know why.
* For the Nth time, probably: VBA macros don't work on the Mac, and Mac macros don't work on Windows. So, how am I supposed to share files with co-workers? [alert admin]

Adobe Flash Player 9.0.28.0 (Mac OS X)
I don't understand why some people have trouble with permissions, and some don't. I have *never* had permissions issues with any SW installation. (Yes, I install a lot of SW, and I keep it up to date.) Does anyone out there know what causes people to have problams? [alert admin]

Preferential Treatment 1.1.7 (Mac OS X)
I said (in a comment that I have removed):
> -BringToFront.plist seems to cause problems.
This is not the case. The problem is more subtle, and I have notified the developer. [alert admin]

VLC media player 0.8.4a (Mac OS X)
I just downloaded it. It plays files that Mplayer OSX screws up. No "crash on startup" problems with 10.4.4 (as some have reported). Loads large files quickly. [alert admin]

It would be nice if the developers told us what they "fixed" or "improved". [alert admin]

It says "BETA" right there in the headline. What's your problem, exactly?

This is the kind of review that makes VersionTracker's star ratings worthless.

I see. The random user is supposed to know to do this. Does Google mention it in their privacy policy? I thought not. > Simply delete > ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.google.keystone.agent.plist > to disable the checker.

Finder window keeps popping up!
I don't see the behavior that you do. I get a "page blocked" popup about once a month.

I'm considering upgrading, and am hoping to learn about version 4 by reading these comments. A vain hope if they are all as worthless as this one is.

PH has *many* more and *better* features than GlimmerBlocker and AdBlocker. It's true that I have to update it once per year... whoopee!
