OnyX 1.9.6 (Mac OS X)

Beware of VT's star averages ("This version" and "All Time")

The averages can be seriously biased by uninformed reviews, such as the one recently posted for Onyx. This is especially true for newly released products or versions, when there are not many reviews.

It is important to read the reviews, to make sure that they raise pertinent issues. [alert admin]

Microsoft Office 2008 12.1.1 (Mac OS X)

MathType doesn't work

I'm sure that this has been reported before, but just in case ...

* MathType does not work in Office 2008. The MT developers say they're are working on a solution, (3rd q 2008, they say) but until then I'm staying with 2004. If you do anything but the dumbest equation editing, you know why.

* For the Nth time, probably: VBA macros don't work on the Mac, and Mac macros don't work on Windows. So, how am I supposed to share files with co-workers? [alert admin]

Adobe Flash Player 9.0.28.0 (Mac OS X)

Permissions problems ???

I don't understand why some people have trouble with permissions, and some don't. I have *never* had permissions issues with any SW installation. (Yes, I install a lot of SW, and I keep it up to date.) Does anyone out there know what causes people to have problams? [alert admin]

Preferential Treatment 1.1.7 (Mac OS X)

A subtle bug

I said (in a comment that I have removed):
> -BringToFront.plist seems to cause problems.

This is not the case. The problem is more subtle, and I have notified the developer. [alert admin]

VLC media player 0.8.4a (Mac OS X)

Much better than Mplayer OSX

I just downloaded it. It plays files that Mplayer OSX screws up. No "crash on startup" problems with 10.4.4 (as some have reported). Loads large files quickly. [alert admin]

Cisco VPN Client 4.8.00.0490 (Mac OS X)

What's new ???

It would be nice if the developers told us what they "fixed" or "improved". [alert admin]

I'd give zero stars, if possible.

The list of nonfunctional items is too long to fit in this margin. I've gone back to 3.5.3, as have other reviewers. [alert admin]

PDF Browser Plugin 2.2.2 (Mac OS X)

Not up to snuff anymore

I used to use PDF Browser Plugin, but no more. The Adobe Reader plugin works better. Features that PBP lacks (and Adobe has):
* The ability to zoom to page width or full page
* The ability to select text
* The ability to search for text
PBP is now a second rate product.

In addition, the documentation is crappy. The little pictures that are supposed to illustrate keyboard commands are undecipherable. [alert admin]

Why is everyone so unfair on Stuffit?

Because they don't understand the purpose of SW reviews. One is supposed to review what the SW does vs what it claims to do, not whether it is useful for one's own needs. I don't downgrade Mathematica because it doesn't do what Photoshop does.

Plain English??

If shortcut A invokes shortcut B, and B stops (successfully) before its last step, that could incorrectly terminate shortcut A.

No Problems with 2.0

It's not a matter of idiocy (I didn't see that word in the comment). Simply put:
.
If some SW works on most platforms, then the ones on which it fails must have some other characteristic that is making it fail. Possibilities: Corrupt preference files, other incompatible SW, etc.

Sorry for the muliple postings, the site was crashing on me.

Your inability to use Version Tracker gives me a big hint about the source of your problems with Adobe Reader.
