Mailplane 2.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Why pay $25 for a free service?

Gmail is free and works fine with any browser. [alert admin]

VLC media player 0.9.8a (Mac OS X)

Still systematically crashes with HD movies in .mkv files

This version still systematically crashes with HD movies in .mkv files. Even though this has been reported numerous times in their forums and is very easy to reproduce, they either don't care or are unable to fix it. The most stable version of VLC is by far the 0.8.6i one that was release in July 2008. Still can't argue about the price, like many I have been using this product for years, but it's unfortunate that the quality and stability of the product started to *significantly degrade* with the 0.9.x releases; perhaps the development team has changed(?) QT with Perian is now a better and more stable solution. [alert admin]

Vox 0.2.6 (Mac OS X)

Very good, plays FLA/Ogg files and price is right!

After trying out AudioCodex, I prefer the "lean" approach of Vox - even though it has EQ, compressor, ... settings - including a less than useful phaser/phaser (unless you are a DJ or something). The more so since it focuses on the essentials; it plays all files formats, it is very stable and the price (free) is sure alright. If it had the capability to use Audio Units, it would be perfect for me. [alert admin]

AudioCodex 1.47 (Mac OS X)

Not bad, but no FLAC support equals showstopper for me.

It's a nice piece of software and the "FX Chain" is a neat idea, for those like me who have virtual effects in the form of AUs (i.e. PSP Vintage Warmer and MasterQ). I don't understand how the people behind AudioCodex can't figure out how to implement FLAC support, however they sure are spending a lot of time on eye candy for the app itself. I guess I will stick for the time being with the free iTunes and Vox - but hélas without effects. [alert admin]

VLC media player 0.9.2 (Mac OS X)

Still crashes with HD videos !

I was expecting a lot from this version, but unfortunately I have to report that the constant crashing problem with high bitrate HD videos is still there. As for the 0.9.1 version, it crashes instantly when fast forwarding/rewinding or just by itself after a while when playing the video. Such a shame. [alert admin]

SuperDuper! 2.1.4 (Mac OS X)

Very good, but with CCC v3 out, it's hard to justify the cost

SD! is a very good piece of software and does as advertised, but Carbon Copy Cloner does just as well and is free. Since the new v3 of CCC is now out, it's hard for SD! to justify its price. [alert admin]

RadioSHARK 1.0.5 (RS73) (Mac OS X)

Finally the 1.0.5 release seems to make the device work correctly.

All time-shifting related bugs and the perpetual loop problem seem to have been dealt with, making the RadioSHARK finally usable. Still the GUI isn't exactly a work of art of a usability wonder, perhaps in future releases? [alert admin]

Path Finder 3.2.2 (Mac OS X)

Wait for the v4 release before buying it.

Path Finder is a very good idea, but they are serious bugs/problems in the 3.2.2 version, which haven't been fixed since its release last September. As a current and long time customer, I didn't receive any replies to my inquiries about a 3.3 or 3.2.3 release. If you want to buy this software, I would recommend waiting to see how the v4 turns out as far as quality/stability. Caveat emptor [alert admin]

Delicious Library 1.1 (Mac OS X)

When form takes over function

After reading several raving reviews about Delicious Library, since I'm a DVDpedia user, I gave it a spin - my thoughts. *** Pros *** 1. Gorgeous user interface 2. Can manage several types of medias from a single tool 3. The iSight idea is nice, but I don't own one so I don't know how well it works. 4. Good integration with the address book and iCal 5. Good integration with amazon.com 6. Can import from other cataloging applications *** Cons *** 1. It does detects my DVDpedia library, but for some reason doesn't import anything, which makes the import feature kind of worthless in this case 2. There's no IMDB support and international user/media support is very bad (how hard/expensive can that be when everybody else is doing it? I mean 40$ isn't exactly pocket change) 3. The application itself feel sluggish, the contextual menus sometimes don't work or need a 2nd click somewhere else to pop up 4. No documentation or help file, only a link to a FAQ on a web site 5. If there's a way to manage the fields or control of what's being imported, I haven't found it. 6. No HTML export, you have to use a 3rd party hack to do it. I think it's a good start and they are good ideas in there, but it needs more work, *far more work*. Between the nasty bugs, the lack of International support, the lack of any form of documentation and the obvious features missing - important "obvious" features seen in most (if not all) other competitors products - I can't justify paying 40$ for it. For me the bottom line is I'm mostly disappointed with Delicious Library. Clearly the application was designed for aesthetics and form first and function in the process took a 2nd seat. Consider gSync

Totally agree, myself I just use Google's sharing option directly with iCal on my MacBook Pro.
