GIFmation 2.3.5 (Mac OS 9)

Mac OS X application.... NOT!!!

Released in the Mac OS X section, but actually a classic application. Gets a big 1 star since this application will not even run on OS X (which supposedly it does), and does not even warn about it in the info text. [alert admin]

MrScopa 1.0.3 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

Fun, but needs more work

The game is fun. Unfortunately the interface is a bit confusing. There are several minor issues that led me to think that this game still needs some work to be complete, but it surely does have the potential to become a good Scopa game. As an example: it is hard to understand which cards you have selected at first. Maybe instead of putting a coloured line at it's bottom the game could simply move the selected cards up a bit. The documentation is complicated to understand if you don't know the rules already. Maybe because it is written in a poor/confusing english. The game would have a much broader audience if more attention went to the documentation. On a side note I would like to see this game include the "aces eat all cards" variant of the game. I do not consider the lack of this variant a problem with the game (as the rules obviously change between regions), but in the nord of italy everyone plays with that rule, and it should not be hard to add such a feature to the game. I don't want to bash this game excessively as it has a good potential. It is fun already as it is, but I wouldn't pay for this application in it's current state. I really hope the guy that put this application together spends some more time on it, so it will eventually become a game that is worth my money. = ) [alert admin]

Apple Xcode 1.5 (Mac OS X)

Great review.

This is a great review of an incredible programming tool. My only complaint so far is that I can no longer use CMD + B to build my project. Appart from that Xcode has been improving in stability and product quality enormously since it's initial version. Personally I find the editor window on the build results and such quite a nice addition, as those who don't want it can easily hide it. To me, it is nice to be able to check the error locations within the same window. A recommended upgrade to those using earlier versions. [alert admin]

Apple Safari 1.3.2 (Mac OS X)

I love it!

Safari v1.2.2 is one of the best browsers I've had so far. It takes seconds to open and when you're inside you're faced with a very clean and simple interface (unlike many modern browsers). It loads pages very quickly as well. I am glad to see that it concentrates on simplicity and stability rather than in offering 10 applications into a single one (I can't stand those browsers with mail apps or chat apps embedded into them). It does what it is supposed to do very well. [alert admin]

REALbasic 5.5.1 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

Too expensive...

Realbasic is OK. In my opinion far better than Visual Basic. For creating Interfaces it is maybe the best development tool out there. The problem is that this program's cost is enormous. For the standard version you have to shell out $149.95 and $29.95 for the upgrade (from 5.0 to 5.5)? This could be acceptable. But you get some restrictions... and if you want certain features like using external databases then you have to remove those restrictions and buy the professional version which costs $449.95! Then get the 5.5 upgrade for $119.95... which makes it almost $570 for the pro version until 6.0. WHAT?!? I mean COME ON! Professional products like CodeWarrior from Metrowerks have lower costs and they give you more freedom: you can code programs in different languages, for different platforms and most important of all... be 100% sure that the bugs in your code are caused by YOUR code, and not a faulty compiler. From my personal experience I can say that CodeWarrior is released with almost no bugs at all, and if there are bugs they fix them for FREE. From my past experience in RB I remember having to wait ages until certain features I had paid for were fixed. And they weren't usable unless I paid for upgrades and upgrades. So for those who asked: yes, you RealSoftware made me pay for bug fixes in the past, and as a developer I can only see this way of doing business as unacceptable. As I said earlier, Realbasic ain't bad, but the prices are STILL too high. As long as Metrowerks codewarrior offers me such a superior product for much less, I ain't coming back to RB. [alert admin]

EV Nova 1.0.7 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

A 5 star universe!

And yet another great game by ambrosia. I have been playing Escape Velocity since the early days and it's still as addictive as it was back then. The graphics just keep getting better, the universe bigger than ever and the sound effects are very very good for a shareware product. And the best of all: the storyline is actually good! You'll fail to find other products out there that can challenge this game in quality and fun. Only suggestion tho, play this game only if you have $30 bucks in your pocket, because if you have to wait to save them, the waiting will be painful = ) [alert admin]

Pac the Man 2 1.0.4 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

Very cool game!

I'm running the game in a Cube at 400 (or was it 450?) Mhz and it is really smooth. The attention to detail is a clear sign of the quality of the game, as well as the quality of the developer. Great graphics and sound. The only thing that should be changed in my opinion is that ghosts should be slower than you are (at least on early levels). But this is just a small thing really. And best of all the game is freeware. Well worth your download. [alert admin]

Too expensive...

Err, mistake. Realbasic total cost = $569. But still I think the cost is too high when you think that what is the most professional development tool for Macintosh costs $599. Diego Rey

Too expensive...

"REALbasic standard costs $99.95. REALbasic professional costs $399.95. REALbasic's upgrade for standard is $29.95. REALbasic's upgrade for Pro is $119.95."

That is not true. You're talking about just licenses there, not fully packaged product with documentaion and examples. To make a fair comparison I'll put the RB multi-platform development cost, with documentation and updates up to 6.0:

Realbasic professional v5.0 (full package with documentation and examples): $449.95
Realbasic license update (no docs…

Great, another update...

I have coded with RealBasic and Visual Basic in the past, and let me assure you that the attention to details in RB is completely absent in VB... a much better IDE if you ask me. I use C++ though. Diego Rey
