AOL Desktop Beta 10 (Mac OS X)

Why all the vitriol?

Not only are you taking pot shots and making disparaging remarks about the developer and the programmers trying to catch up after many year of neglect, but you’re also criticizing those of us, for whatever reason, choose to still use AOL. There ARE reasons, but listing them would just invite more criticism. Get over yourselves. If you don’t have anything good to say or can’t offer constructive feedback, there’s really no need for you to post comments. Get a life. [alert admin]

Sound Studio 3.5.4 (Mac OS X)

What's New?

Agree with the last poster . . . but perhaps a bit more politely. It's a good program, but please tell us what's new in updates. [alert admin]

Parallels Desktop 2.5 Build 3150.0 (Mac OS X)

Finally ! I can run AutoCAD LT on a Mac

I bought an Intel Mac in Dec. and have been holding off to see what the best Windoze solution would be. After looking at reviews and opinions I downloaded Parallels today, converted my old Virtual PC disc to Parallels. I was up and running Windoze XP and then AutoCAD in about an hour. Converting the original VPC disc took about 15 minutes in Windoze under VPC on a pre-Intel Mac, and then converting further on the Mac Pro took another 15 minutes. The VPC files is about 10 GB. Auto CAD LT 2007 works absolutely fine and fast. No problems yet. This is fantastic! [alert admin]

Good Stuff! Give it a try and encourage the developer!

I had about given up on finding a way to get back to AOL with my new Mac Pro. But, I heard about Cheshire today (by word of mouth), and though it's a work-in-progress, it is a great start. It sure is "fashionable" to bash AOL; I've heard that stuff for years. But, for the rest of us that find AOL has the right combination of features (simplicity for some, more advanced for others), whether for our own needs, your parents or grand parents or less computer-savvy friends, I'd encourage you to step up to the plate, give Cheshire a fair try, give the developer intelligent, thoughtful and useful feedback, and let's help them keep this software alive and well. WindowFinder 1.4 (Mac OS X)

WindowFinder 1.4 (Mac OS X)

I'd love this if . . . .

. . . if it were faster. I work with 2 monitors and several open programs routinely; because of this WindowFinder would be a great utility. In concept I find it superior to Expose. However, it seems to be excruciatingly slow: when I click on the WindowFinder menu icon it takes no less than 6 seconds for the window list to appear. If there are known problem or known conflicts, I'd love to know about them. But, unless I can get a faster response, I'll have to pass on this one. By way of explanation, my Star Rating (5 stars) for Ease Of Use is wishful thinking, that is, if it were faster, than Ease of Use would be great. As it is now, my Overall rating of 1 star is closer to the truth, but with the hope that this app can be made to respond more quickly. [alert admin]

Sonogram 2.48 (Mac OS X)

Good, solid program for acoustics analysis

This appears to be a technically robust implementation of some well-established acoustics analysis algorithms. [alert admin]

iSpectrum Analyzer 2.04 (Mac OS X)

OK . . . but, let's deal with this on a more real-world level

FFTs are all well and good from a theoretical perspective. But human hearing, and the correlation to the auditory/acoustic experience, is more clearly indicated in octave bands, 1/3 octaves, or 1/12 octaves. Not a difficult thing to extract from the FFT data, and far more intuitive. This program a good start, but we need more Mac software that is really in the audio domain. Physics is great, but we need to keep linear and log scales in their proper domains. [alert admin]

Spector 3.0.2 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

3 days of hell since installing Spector

I installed Spector 3 days ago. The installation went smoothly and I did all the usual permission repairs to assure a smooth installation. On restart I got a kernel panic. Couldn't repair this with TechTools or DiskWarrior. Tried the original Mac OS 10.3 install disks and ran Disk Utility. I ran "Repair Permissions" and it took 15 minutes repairing permissions on thousands of System files. No, that's not an exaggeration - I just watched the list of repaired files scroll by or a full 15 minutes. I stupidly went through the entire process again thinking that I might have done something wrong. Same result. Tried updating my OS from 10.3.5 to 10.3.9: clean install, etc. And, again, the kernel panic and lengthy permission repairs. I ran the Spector uninstaller but that apparently didn't really remove it: I keep get dialog boxes and alerts from Spector. Looks like this program is doing some messing with low-level system files and, apparently not doing it correctly. This has all been a tremendous waste of time . . . and I'll still have to run a complete reinstallation. If that doesn't do it then it'll be more time for a complete reformat and install. In 20 years of using Macs this is the worst software problem I've ever had. To be fair to the vendor I'll update this when and if they can tell me how to correct this mess. [alert admin]

NotePad Deluxe 2.3.4 (Mac OS X)

I think it's all over for NPD

From the first day I used NotePad Deluxe it was, for me, the best implementation of a Mac-like, flexilbe, intuitive Note Pad. It's now been a long time since anyone from the developer's site has shown any indication of updating this app. It's dead! Too Bad. For others who knew and love NPD, what is the next best Note Pad? I agree. AOL 10.3.7 still works . . .

. . . and I've been using it since I got my Mac Pro. Actually I've been using AOL since it came out in the 1980s. ALL the same old features work, or at least the ones I need. I'm self-employed, and I've had ads all over the country with my email address in them for years. I'd lose business if I switched and, yes, I know there are ways to make the transition less…

For 12 years I have been trying to run Windows on a Mac

Yes. I did it about 2 months ago. The procedure was not "clearly" explained in any of the software documentation that I found; perhaps it's just that there were things that I did not understand. But, by trial-and-error I did get a VPC image converted. I do recall that it didn't take long, but it took me 2 or 3 tries. Read the documentation carefully a few times. Perhaps someone has provided a clear step-by-step on…

These Dopes STILL Using the WRONG NAME???

What a shame that a quibble over this program's name might put off some potential users. This self-appointed expert (blueskymining) has a point that, in common usage, the ultrasonogram is now, more often, referred to as a sonogram. But, the more correct term for this program (get ready all you pedants out there) is "spectrogram," and in days gone by this had been known as a “voiceprint.” And, for the record, there is no implicit…
