ASM 2.3 (Mac OS X)
Al Varnell mentions a couple of good alternatives for ASM if you're balking at the upgrade fee for ASM. X-Assist still seems to work with Snow Leopard. It's a little bit primitive compared to ASM, but the basic functions (i.e. application switcher menu and classic window mode) are there. Meanwhile, Jack Overfull says that he's working on a new version of multiXFinder (v0.4). At the top of the list is Snow Leopard compatibility. It should be available sometime this month. That's good news for people who like the way that ASM operates, since it's basically the same app. Personally, I'm debating whether to pay the upgrade fee. I've been an ASM user for several years and had assumed that the upgrades would continue to be free. But, nothing lasts forever, I guess. I'll probably try X-Assist for a while, then multiXFinder when a 10.6-compatible version arrives. If they don't work out, then I can always ante up the dough for ASM again. [alert admin]

VLC Media Player 1.0.1 (Mac OS X)
VLC 0.9.10 for OS X 10.4.x (Tiger)
Just wanted to mention to all the folks still using OS X 10.4.x (Tiger) that VLC 0.9.10 was released recently. It fixes several annoying bugs and crashes that plagued 0.9.9a.
It can be found at: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html
Scroll about halfway down the page to find Universal, PPC, and Intel binaries. [alert admin]

Apple iLife Support 9.0.1 (Mac OS X)
For those who are wondering why this shows up in Software Update, even though you don't have iLife '09 installed... Software Update detects that you have iTunes (technically part of the iLife Suite) in your Apps folder, so it assumes that you have the rest of the iLife apps. If anyone recalls, the same thing happened when iLife '06 users were prompted to apply the iLife Support Update v8.3 (for iLife '08). So, if you don't have iLife '09, you can ignore this update. If it works the same way as the previous v8.3 update, then you'll just get an error message telling you that it can't update the iLife '09 shared components because they aren't present. [alert admin]

Haxial TextEdit 1.1 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
About a year ago, I used Haxial TextEdit to create Windows autorun files (known to Mac users as "AutoStart") for the multimedia presentation CDs that I created with Director and Flash. It was useful for that task (because I didn't have to start up Virtual PC just to write a 0.5 KB file with Notepad), but beyond that, I couldn't really see myself using it as an actual text editor. Most people would be better served using something like BBEdit (which I use constantly), in that case, if only for the more intuitive user interface. I stopped using this app when I finally got around to buying an actual Windows PC to do my Windows authoring, usability, and testing. I haven't downloaded or used it since about v1.2, so I can't comment on whether it has gotten uglier or harder to use (though I get that impression from the comments here). But, if you have a specialized use for this app, such as the one that I had, then maybe it'll be of some benefit. So, I'm grudgingly recommending this app on that very specific basis. Otherwise, stay far away. [alert admin]

Proteus 3.0 (Mac OS X)
For those having connection problems with Proteus
I'd suggest visiting the Proteus forum <http://www.indigofield.com/forums/>and reading the tips and tricks that people have been posting in there. Many of the problems reported in VT comments/reviews have been worked around. [alert admin]

Classic Window Management 1.0b4 (Mac OS X)
I'm one of those people who prefers windows grouped by app. This exceptional little utility returns a behaviour to the Mac OS that I find indispensible. It also allows me to dump ASM (since the only reason I used that app was for Classic Window Mode). Many thanks! [alert admin]

Hi lenwhyte, For apps with versions for both architectures (Intel and PPC), I usually check the author's website to make sure that I get the right one. In Adobe's case, Reader for Mac updates are found by clicking the Support drop-down menu from the Adobe.com home page, then choosing Updates. From there, select "Adobe Reader - Macintosh". That gives you the entire gamut of Reader updates dating back to v6.0.

anothersphere, Check the dates of the comments that you're responding to. At the time that those comments were made, v1.37's requirements _did not_ list 10.5. And, for the benefit of "itsnotanoption" and Anthony... Yes, v1.37 was compatible with 10.5.

Beth, Open the Preferences and click on 'Scanner'. Then, uncheck the boxes for "Speak discovered names" and "Play sound at completion of each scan". That should make the app completely silent.

The same thing has happened to me. Every download attempt has resulted in an incomplete or corrupt file. The problem is that the server is being clobbered by tons of requests, so our downloads are timing out. I suppose that the only thing to do is to try again when it's less busy.

I agree with the bulk of your statement, however, one small clarification: Apple _did not_ rip off Konfabulator. In fact, it was the other way around -- the idea of small applets (AKA "widgets") running concurrently with bigger apps and the OS was first implemented as "Desk Accessories" on the original Mac in 1984. See: http://daringfireball.net/2004/06/dashboard_vs_konfabulator

KernelG, Registered Toast owners won't see the 127 MB download option because the label-making software is superfluous (already included with Toast, as you mentioned). Those of us who already own Toast will see the 10 MB option for $29.95. The 127 MB download would cost the full $49.95.

Have a look at the website (http://www.trackyourmac.net/). It clearly explains that the IP address can be tracked via e-mail or displayed on a website. If the Mac is stolen and eventually gets back on the web, the rightful owner is notified of the new IP address. Using the IP address, law enforcement can trace the Mac to its new location and, with any luck, recover it.
