TypeIt4Me 4.2 (Mac OS X)
After 28 days of trying to get an answer from Ettore about the sudden failure of TypeIt4Me to retain its registration data, I have come to a sad conclusion. Ettore must be out of business. Most of the published email addresses they give have been bouncing. At least one of those addresses doesn't bounce, but it also doesn't produce any response. I enlisted help from their payment processor, Kagi, and they tried to reach Ettore, also without success. I don't know what has happened -- they used to provide good support and were quite responsive, and the software (when it works) is great, but without a means of registering it, it becomes quickly unusable. I can't recommend that anyone send a shareware payment for it under the circumstances. [alert admin]

CopyPaste Pro 1.0.1 (Mac OS X)
Still not compatible with TypeIt4Me ![]()

I had used an older version of CopyPaste for years, even though it occasionally had conflicts with another crucial (for me) application, TypeIt4Me. TypeIt4Me automatically expands short codes into whatever long-winded text you like -- for example, I can type an "a" followed by a hard space and get my full address auto-typed. I asked whether the new version of CopyPaste Pro had that same conflict and was told: "the old copypaste had issues [at] times because of the older way of doing things. i think if you try copypaste pro you will find there are no conflicts. that is one reason we rewrote it completely." $20 later, I now know that the new CopyPaste Pro not only has conflicts with TypeIt4Me, the conflicts are even more serious than the old version, rendering TypeIt4Me unusable when CopyPaste Pro is installed. CCP is a good application on its own, but if TI4M is important to you, you might want to reconsider. [alert admin]

iAlarm 2.02 (Mac OS X)
iAlarm sounds like just what I was looking for, but I can't get this 2.02 version to load on my iMac (PowerPC G4 running OS X 10.4.11). When I launch the program, it immediately quits ("unexpectedly quit"). [alert admin]

Word Counter Widget 1.1 (Mac OS X)
I haven't used this long, but so far it seems to work as advertised. I'm a bit surprised that it has over 900 downloads with not a single rating. So I'm jumping the gun a bit and giving it a good rating. If, after some period of use, I discover problems with it, I'll come back and post again. [alert admin]

Maxi Bidder 1.9.9 (Mac OS X)
There are much better options... ![]()

I used MaxiBidder for more than a year and had a lot of success with it, and gave it a good rating the last time I reviewed it. But I also experienced lost bids. That's not usually the developer's fault, since eBay keeps changing the way their site works and necessitating tweaks to the sniping software, no matter which sniper app you use. But the developer of MaxiBidder is often slow to respond to these changes, and his attitude toward his customers is unprofessional. Often complaints or questions go unanswered for days, not acceptable for commercial or shareware apps. There are better options available. I now use JBidWatcher, a great snipe program that is Java-based, cross-platform, speedy, reliable, and handles multi-snipes (where you can set up 2 or more snipes as a group and it will bid on each of them until it wins one, then stop bidding on the others). JBidWatcher has a lot more features than MaxiBidder, and it's free. [alert admin]

Apple QuickTime 7.0.4 (Mac OS X)
This 7.04 version (both of them) also breaks JBidWatcher (a java app for sniping eBay auctions). It's pretty clear that this version was not ready for release. Stick with 7.01 until Apple gets it right. [alert admin]

Romi 5.2 (Mac OS X)
I've been playing Romi for many years and it's still one of my favorite card games on the Mac. The game play is smooth. It's challenging without being maddening and it's a great way to take a break from work. The developer continues to provide excellent support. Well worth the shareware fee. [alert admin]

I've tried versions 1.0 and 1.01 of this game, but in both cases, the evaluation period lasted less than a minute. That's no time at all to figure out whether the game really works or is any fun. What a waste of download time. [alert admin]

Spinfree Audiofile Internet Companion 1.1 (Mac OS 9)
This was a handy gadget when it was released, but it no longer works and Spinfree dropped support for it. Don't waste your time. [alert admin]

Maxi Bidder 1.93 (Mac OS 9)
This is a simple but very reliable and useful program. It's the best program on the Mac for sniping bids on eBay. Set it up and it will place all of your bids for you all day long, each one placed just seconds before the auction ends. There are a few quirks -- the Save step is a bit awkward, and using it for international bidding is a little confusing the first few times. But overall, this is a very good snipe program, backed by some supportive developers who are quick to respond when eBay changes the way it works (as they did recently). Well worth the shareware fee. I just finally received a response from Ettore with an apology for the long silence (and a nice make-up gesture -- a free code for version 4.2). It didn't include any explanation for the long delay, but at least we know he's still alive and still supporting TypeIt4Me.

Save your money -- the developer seems to be out of business and no longer supporting this software.

It has now been more than a week since I first emailed support about this problem and still no response. I also sent an additional email, both to the support address and to another email address they showed on their website. The second one bounced back; still no response to the others. And the annoying bogus "gotta register" messages are getting more frequent.

I'm having the same problem using v4.1.1 under OS 10.5.8, so it's not unique to Snow Leopard. It just started 2 or 3 days ago, and has gotten progressively worse. At first, it would allow me to re-register using one or another of my serial numbers (I have 3, though I think 1 of them was for an earlier version, but these days, I use only 1 of them), but the registration would expire after…
