A Cook's Books 0.8.6.3 (Mac OS X)

Plenty of features, terrible interface.

Pros: Imports things Yum! chokes on; shopping list and meal planner features are excellent in theory. Extremely powerful 'find' feature. Cons: Sometimes it's a three-pane app, sometimes there are tab bars nested three deep; the interface needs a consistency overhaul, stat. (Maybe move some of those functions like the shopping list and references to a separate window?). Doesn't convert XML character entities (" &) when importing from MasterCook MX2 format. Presentation is lacking in professionalism; is the author a native English speaker? If so, retain a proofreader. [alert admin]

iCab 2.9 (Mac OS 9)

It could have…

been good. But now it has well and truly dropped the ball. On OSX, Safari has just taken over its niche as the 'speedy browser', with more functionality in its public beta than iCab ever had; on OS9, even the bloated behemoth of Mozilla (with the proper theme) offers a more enjoyable browsing experience. I guess it's still useful for anyone with a 68K machine, but you have to give up stone axes and flints sometime. [alert admin]

Seems to be…

faster than previous versions. Maybe the reworking of the memory management helped. Best Mac-like interface of any browser short of Chimera (which won't run on Classic anyway). [alert admin]

Seems kind of...…

large... for something SoundApp will still do just as well in Classic. And SoundApp is more than a one-trick pony. [alert admin]

Win 1.21: April…

19. Win 1.29: July 18. Mac 1.21: August 13. Come on, MacSoft, put some more people on the project already. I love Civ but it hurts when I can't join in succession games with Win players. [alert admin]

Excellent replacement for…

Photoshop's buggy PNG plugin. And you gotta love the talking frog. [alert admin]

Nah

--alt-preset cbr <bitrate> will give you constant bitrate at the best possible quality for a given bitrate. See also http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/
