Missing Sync for Palm OS 6.0 (Mac OS X)

Don't install version 6.0

Things worked OK for me with version 5, but shortly after I installed version 6.0 I started getting error messages (and a refusal to sync) whenever I tried to sync iCal. On the Mark/Space support forum, I saw some messages from a Mark/Space support person suggesting that the problem was because version 6 did some stricter error-checking than version 5 did -- but I don't believe this, because the error messages persisted even after I reverted to version 5. The only way I could get my calendar to sync was by reverting to an older version of my calendar :-( Since Versiontracker's description of 6.0.1b4 doesn't say they've fixed this problem, I'm not going to install it. EasyTask Manager 1.7.7 (Mac OS X)

Problems with keyboard use

I tried out EasyTask today, but ended up discarding it. Most of its features seemed pretty appealing, but I was disappointed to find that it often ignored the standard Apple keyboard shortcuts (the ones activated by the "full keyboard access" option of Apple's Keyboard and Mouse preferences). Instead, for nearly everything I wanted to do, I had to switch back and forth between the keyboard and the mouse. For many of you, this might not be an issue, but for me it's a show stopper. I work much faster when I can keep my hands on the keyboard. If a subsequent version of EasyTask fixes this problem, I'll probably try it again. [alert admin]

Default Folder X 2.0.3 (Mac OS X)

Wouldn't want to be without it

I use Default Folder dozens of times every day, and would have trouble using my computer without it. In addition to clicking on background windows as described by julia2, I especially like being able to use the same hotkey to go to a folder if I'm in a dialog box or open the folder if I'm in the Finder. The developer is great - he has always been quite responsive to my comments and requests. [alert admin]

Mulberry 4.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Response to Hangnail

I disagree strongly with Hangnail's contention that "Proper IMAP clients don't load all mail locally." That may work if one has a fast IMAP server (like he says he does) and without much mail stored on it. But it doesn't work if one has a slow IMAP server and has a lot of mail (1.25 GB in my case) stored on it.

Two or three years ago, I tried using Mulberry full-time for about 4-5 months, but gave up in frustration: Mulberry was making me wait 15-20 seconds to switch from one mailbox to another, and several minutes every time I did a search. If they ever modify Mulberry to cache mail locally, then I'll try it again, but not until then. [alert admin]

LaunchBar 4.0.1 (Mac OS X)

I've also used both, and I agree with blckbrry

Until LaunchBar came along, DragThing was my favorite launcher. But once I became familiar with LaunchBar, I started using it and discarded DragThing -- LaunchBar works much better for me because I'm a touch typist and hate to use the mouse. Nowadays, there are three system utilities that I keep running at all times, and can't (or don't want to) do without: LaunchBar, QuicKeys (which I use to get emacs-style keybindings in every program on my entire system!), and Default Folder (for better integration between open/save dialogs and the Finder). That said, there's one change that I'd really like to see in LaunchBar. Since command-D is supposed to be the equivalent of drag-and-drop, I wish it would obey the default drag-and-drop actions that I've set in the Preferences. But for something that minor, I certainly won't subtract any points from my rating :-) [alert admin]

Remote Remote 0.7b (Mac OS X)

problems authenticating

I think something's wrong with its authentication dialog. It lets me authenticate to the remote machine with my own username, but not with my wife's username. That's a problem since my wife is the remote machine's primary user. [alert admin]

Adobe Reader 7.0.0 (Mac OS X)

Grrr ...

In the download image, Adobe really needs to rename the file "Adobe Reader 7.0.app" to something like "Adobe Reader Installer". Thinking that this file was the app itself, I dragged-and-dropped it to my machine and ran it seven times (installing seven duplicate copies of the app) before I figured out what was wrong! Combine PDFs 1.0 (Mac OS X)

PDFs aren't searchable

I've tried Combine PDFs, PDFLab, and PDFJoiner. Of the three, I think Combine PDFs is the weakest. It PDFs are about 50% larger the other two, and they aren't searchable (e.g., Preview's "find" command won't work).

For me, it's essential to have searchable PDFs, and PDFJoiner is the only one of the three that can do that. Thus I'm using PDFJoiner even though its interface is a bit clunky. [alert admin]

PDFLab 1.1 (Mac OS X)

doesn't create searchable PDFs

I've tried Combine PDFs, PDFLab, and PDFJoiner. PDFLab has the nicest user interface of the three. But for me, it has a big disadvantage: its PDFs are not searchable (i.e., Preview's "find" command won't work). For me, that feature is essential.

PDFJoiner is the only one of the three that creates searchable PDFs -- thus I'm using PDFJoiner even though its interface is clunky. [alert admin]

PDFJoiner 0.40b (Mac OS X)

Main advantage: creates searchable PDFs

I've tried Combine PDFs, PDF Lab, and PDFJoiner -- and for me, PDFJoiner is the best of the three. Unlike the other two, it creates searchable PDFs (in which Preview's "find" command works). I regard that as essential -- thus I'm keeping PDFJoiner and discarding the other two.

I'm giving it four points rather than five because the user interface makes it a pain to specify what files to concatenate. I can't drag-and-drop files from the finder, and the "add" command always opens in the desktop folder rather than going to the last-previously-used folder. [alert admin]

Why is this relevant?

Maybe I'm missing something fundamental here, but I don't see how the above instructions are relevant for most users. I just downloaded 5.7.2 directly and replaced my copy of 5.7.1 with 5.7.2, with no problems whatsoever.

Not an official release, and nothing special

Apparently your concept of what it means to "add value" is pretty different from mine. I prefer an emacs implementation that doesn't break any of the emacs-standard keybindings and macro files. As I discovered the hard way, Aquamacs breaks both.

Nice but I need to locate units easier

If you feel comfortable using Max OS X's unix command line, there's a build-in command-line program called "units" that does what you want. For info about it, launch Terminal.app and type "man units". I like it better than any of the GUI-oriented unit-conversion programs I've tried.

Requires a Substantial Machine (not!)

Same here. I haven't tried 3.2.1 yet, but have used several earlier versions on two PowerBook G4s (1000 MHz and 500 Mhz). I've had no speed problems on either of them.

Syntax highlighting suggestion

Sorry, that's not feasible because latex is too powerful. Command definitions can be executed conditionally, commands can be redefined, commands can load files that define other commands and load other files, and so forth.

Bug fixed

I contacted OmniWeb, and it turns out that the problem was easy to fix. One of the previous versions had a bug that corrupted the fontsize preference - the fix is to reset it by editing the display preferences.
