Fish 1.5 (Mac OS X)
Very nice for freeware but certainly not the best ![]()

Pros: The fish look very nice for freeware. It that its 3D. Cons: The 3D plants look unrealistic to the point of being irritating (developers: please use more polygons and/or splines if a good graphics card is available!). The depth of the fish should be constrained to prevent most from being tiny. Overall, very nice for freeware, but not a replacement for more realistic shareware. [alert admin]

3D Desktop Aquarium Screen Saver 1.5 (Mac OS X)
Good value but could be a little more realistic. ![]()

The fish look pretty good but could be a little more realistic and have more variety (compared to the Marine Aquarium fish). It would also be nice if they provided some fish tank backgrounds. However, they do provide the option to load a folder of pictures as backgrounds, so I guess I could download some and do it that way. Overall, room for improvement in realism, but worth it for the price. [alert admin]

Goldfish Aquarium 2.0.1 (Mac OS X)
Costs too much for just goldfish. ![]()

It is way too limited for $20. It does have some nice backgrounds, but these could look a little better on my 1900x1200 monitor. The fish look nice, but only a few different kinds of goldfish for $20?! You can get a lot more kinds for fish from Marine Aquarium (but wait if you have a high-res monitor). [alert admin]

Marine Aquarium 2.6.1 (Mac OS X)
The best but wait for the next version. ![]()

If you have a monitor >1024X768, WAIT FOR THE NEXT VERSION. This and Goldfish Aquarium 2 are the best of this type of screen saver, as it has the most realistic looking fish. However, it has some major flaws that prevent me from recommending it: (1) The background looks low resolution (pixelated) on my 1920X1200 iMac display. (2) There is only one background to choose from. How hard is it for them to put in several high-resolution backgrounds, really?! [alert admin]

Screen Ruler 2.2 (Mac OS X)
This is much more limited than Trilithon's "Rulers" at the same cost, and "Free Ruler" doesn't float is. [alert admin]

Free Ruler 1.7b5 (Mac OS X)
How do I turn floating on? Transparency doesn't work. [alert admin]

Forty-Two DVD-VX Plus 2.4 (Mac OS X)
Bill's comments are completely unfair. As an old-time Mac user, I too would prefer code included in the App instead of a GUI wrapper. However, as a developer (no relation to author), I know that this is simply impossible with the licenses of various codecs in all the tools it uses (if nothing else). Rather, the author should be commended for putting a nice, simple-to-use front-end to all these tools and Setup Assistant to download and install them. You want complex, try ffmpegX; it is an extremely powerful and flexible GUI to a lot more (most) video tools, but you have to be a video expert to use it correctly. For the average (DVD) transcoding job, I recommend Forty-Two DVDVX. For more advanced video work, try ffmpegX. Also consider Export2QT for TiVo, Replay, VOB, MPEG1-2 -> QT, and DiVA for WMV,...->3ivx. [alert admin]

Mu 0.3.5b3 (Mac OS X)
If you want a really fast player on a G3 (1/3-1/4 the CPU usage of iTunes), want to organize your playlists using this App, must have an equalizer, and don't care about the occasional skip, use Mu. But if you want a player that uses iTunes' play lists, is as equally fast, and doesn't skip but doesn't have an equalizer, use mpegToaster 2. [alert admin]

mpegToaster 2.0b1 (Mac OS X)
MP3 players and found mpegToaster to be the best solution for minimizing CPU without sacrificing too many features. It takes only 1/3-1/4 the CPU time of iTunes (test on a 266MHz G3 and 1GHz G4) but can still use iTunes' play lists. For me, this is great time saver, since I use iTunes to rip, organize, and sync with my iPod, but don't want to use it to actually play MP3's. Moreover, mpegToaster is optimized for AltiVec, while mpg123 is not, which makes it THE fastest play on G4's. That said, it could use a few more features, such as: an equalizer (which Mu has), a sliding bar to move into the middle of songs, and a smaller player (only) footprint to which it minimizes.
