NameChanger 2.0 (Mac OS X)

Freakin' awesome

I'll echo what's already been stated here: I've been looking for a simple, direct, easy - but powerful - file renamer for quite some time. NameChanger fits the bill perfectly. Bonus: Unlike several other similar utilities, it accepts drag-n-drop. So, I add it to my Finder window toolbar, and can easily rename one (or several) items without even having to think to launch the app first. This is how it should be: It Just Works™. Perfect implementation. Major kudos to the developer for not only recognizing the concept of Occam's Razor, but for implementing it in his software products. [alert admin]

ComicBookLover 1.2 build 653 (Mac OS X)

Great app; needs to be scriptable

Love the app: Wonderful UI, quite full-featured, etc. Essentially, it is iTunes for comics - and does a great job as such. A few suggestions to make it even better, though: 1) Add a keyboard shortcut for "Show Comic File" (how about "Cmd-R", to match iTunes? The 'Rotate Right' command could be changed... ) 2) Add AppleScript support. I'd love to be able to create an Automator action which: - Copies a dropped comic into my designated documents area for such files - Opens this comic within CBL - Adds that comic to a specified list within CBL (e.g. "To read") - Modifies tags for that comic, based on filename, user-prompted text, etc. All but the first step (a Finder action) cannot be automated, due to lack of script support in the app. This might be a significant development effort, but would be very beneficial to several users. FastStone Capture 5.3 (Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000)

Absolutely incredible

I've been looking for a screen-capture utility to use which is not dependent upon the PrtScn key. FastStone Capture not only gives me a great UI for managing such screenshots, but more flexibility on what to be captured, how to save them, etc. And it's FREEWARE? I couldn't ask for anything more. Excellent, excellent product. [alert admin]

The 3D Matrix Code Screen Saver 1.0.4 (Mac OS X)

Quite customizable, and quite slick

While other similar screensavers (such as RedPill) are free, this one offers several more customization options, which make it a real stand-out, IMHO. The only one which comes close to this is MatrixGL - which, unfortunately, doesn't work on Intel systems. If you want a bit slicker display than RedPill offers, along with a boatload of additional customization options, give this screensaver a try. I think it's worth the small shareware fee, for the Intel-native release, if nothing else. Also, check out the developer's site for several other unique screensavers. ** Note that VersionTracker has the version identifier wrong: The current release (linked to here) is actually version 1.0.5, which is, indeed, Intel-native. iNotePad 2.4 (Mac OS X)

The best keeps getting better

This is simply the best notepad application I've found, after evaluating TONS of other options. Now, with the new features in 2.4 - especially the ability to create links between notes and to external files - it's even more indispensable. Major kudos to the developer for continuing to enhance an incredible product - while always keeping the original design goals in mind, ensuring incredible performance, and maintaining such an incredibly low shareware fee for new users! Searching STILL broken

Is searching ever going to be fixed? Overall, Pixadex is a nice application, but the inability of reliably finding icons which you KNOW are in your collection, makes it almost worthless. I've heard that this has been a known issue for quite some time; do we have any idea when it might be resolved? [alert admin]

DashboardStarter 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Excellent implementation

Fills a definite need, and goes about it exactly the right way, by initiating Dashboard and then quitting itself - as opposed to a similarly-named application which remains active, wasting CPU cycles. Kudos on a job PERFECTLY done... [alert admin]

Dashboard Starter 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Fills a need - but goes about it the WRONG way

This isn't a bad approach, but I really don't think folks should be installing yet another background process, lurking and stealing CPU cycles for the 99.99% of the time it is not needed.

The similarly-named (but original) "DashboardStarter" - find it here: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/27608 - seems to be a much better approach: It is a one-trick pony, which merely activates then dismisses Dashboard. You set it as a LoginItem, and it does exactly what is needed, when it is needed - and then quits itself.

This implementation, on the other hand, remains active, and simply waits for the Dock to be restarted to reinitialize Dashboard again. Since a vast majority of users will only start the Dock upon login, this is a huge waste of processing. In addition, if you do restart the Dock within an interactive user session (say, to test dock.plist changes, etc.), then you need to wait as it tries to kick off Dashboard again - which at this point is not necessary.

Avoid this implementation, and try DashboardStarter (note the LACK of a space in the name) instead. [alert admin]

ChatMaster 0.5.1 (Mac OS X)

Not compatible with Tiger chats?

I still love this application - as it does a much better job at parsing through old chats than Spotlight can do. But, none of the chats I've created after upgrading to iChat 3.0 appear to be accessible in the ChatMaster list. All chats prior to the Tiger upgrade are there - and are searchable, etc. - but any post-Tiger simply aren't shown in the ChatMaster list, although these new files are still written to the same ~/Documents/iChats/ area. It looks like the file format written by iChat has changed a bit, breaking compatibility. Anyone know if a fix for ChatMaster will be forthcoming? [alert admin]

ICeCoffEE 1.4.2 (Mac OS X)

Abso-tively, posi-lutely incredible

With this latest update, once again we have a simple, yet elegant, solution to easily making just about any URL clickable, anywhere. Kudos to Nicholas for updating this must-have utility for Tiger so quickly. This is definitely one of the best additions you can use to enhance the usability of your Mac; I can't imagine using mine without it. [alert admin]

re: Uninstall?

If you mean "How do I remove it from the toolbar?", just hold down the Command (Apple/Cloverleaf) key, then click and drag it out of the Finder toolbar. Else, choose "View -> Customize Toolbar…" and drag the undesired item(s) out from that display. Note that this works for any toolbars in Mac OS X: Either Cmd-drag items out of the toolbar, or choose "Customize Toolbar…" for detailed configuration.

Re: How do I install this?

Larry: It sounds like you have it installed in the correct location (see "lbodrozic"s post above, or the ReadMe which accompanies the download). To verify, though: Did you first visit Safari's Preferences (under the Safari menu), and ensure SafariBlock was enabled (click the "Enable" button)? I can't remember whether it's "on" by default, so this step might be needed to allow the plugin to do its thing. Also, I'll certainly agree with the other posters here:…

Um, version "1.2.1"? "Reverting"? Huh?

paulc: It seems you might be confusing a few issues... The current version of the iPod shuffle software is 1.1.5 - which was just released this past week. Prior to that, it was version 1.1.4. There is no "1.2.1" to speak of for this model iPod, it doesn't seem... Note that this Reset Utility is intended to restore the iPod back to factory conditions - wiping all content, and loading the latest version of the…

No printing...

Same thing here under 10.4.6 (PPC). I've always LOVED this application, and besides some quirky UI concerns, think it's the best product for its intended purpose. However, now it simply ... doesn't work. Print dialog shows up, but attempts to print result in no actions taking place at all. I've tried wiping all *nixanz* prefs, deleting and re-installing the app, rebooting and clearing all caches, etc. - but nothing works. It appears SnailMail has a severe…

Why bother with Virex?

Because ClamXav can only DETECT viruses - whereas, Virex (and Norton AntiVirus) can actually repair damage done to files which have been infected. Not to mention, the commercial products have a great deal more functionality built-in (automatic scanning, etc.). ClamXav is a _great_ product, but for those who need additional functionality or features, Virex is a great solution.

Um, what does this have to do with the application "ChatMaster"? I know this was entered as a "Comment", but neither of the concerns have anything to do with the application described, which is used to read chat logs.

Have to be an admin user for eupdates

I completely agree: This is a stupid approach for the application to take. All other Mac OS X-savvy applications, if they require authentication, put up a standard authentication dialog - with both username and password fields. The fact that Virex assumes you won't want to change the username from your current account merely shows how out-of-touch the McAfee developers are toward the Mac. Of course, Symantec's NAV isn't much better - but at least…
