Books 3.1.8b (Mac OS X)

New users - do not download 3.1.8b

3.1.8b is an experimental test release intended for a specific small audience. I explicitly asked that no one list this version on sites such as VT, but it seems that someone has reading comprehension problems. If you're a new user to Books, I recommend using 3.1.7 until the official release of 3.1.8 is ready. Thank you. [alert admin]

Shion 1.0b5 (Mac OS X)

Shion not working? Have you installed Indigo before?

If you're having problems running Shion and have installed Indigo in the past, you need to remove a bit of software that Indigo installs into your system that prohibits other applications (such as Shion) from accessing your Insteon hardware. See http://www.audacious-software.com/forums/comments.php?DiscussionID=2&page=1 My apologies for the inconvenience, and I'll be adding a detector for this file in the next release of the application. Ergh

The current 2.0 beta cycle is not intended for the casual user. I don't know why these sites insist on changing the application profile automatically... -Chris, Books Developer [alert admin]

Security/Plugins

"I cannot figure out how to download and install plugins manually. I can see how to allow the application to do this but I am *very* reluctant to take this route. I don't know the source of the plugins, I cannot run them through a virus-scanner before installing/decompressing." Plugins come from: http://books.aetherial.net/downloads/Plugins/ The ones downloaded from the app are in http://books.aetherial.net/downloads/plugins.xml You can download any of these files, uncompress them, scan them, and place them in ~/Library/Application Support/Books/Plugins to replicate…

Pretty good so far

(Disclaimer: I'm the developer of this app.) Some comments on the point that you raise: "It does have some omissions that seem strange to me, such as no standard fields for any sort of catalog number like Dewey or Library of Congress." The Books userbase is spread around the world, so I declined to include standard fields for any of the local cataloging schemes. The Library of Congress quickfill plugin puts that information in the extended info. As…

Better alternatives

I'm the developer of Books and I just wanted to say that I'm a fan of the *-pedias, too. I use Books for my own stuff, but I use DVDPedia for my movie collection and GamePedia for my games. I also wanted to say thanks to Conor at Bruji for opening up his iSight code that Books uses for scanning barcodes via iSight.

Good App

Thanks for the suggestions. They're on my list of things to do. As for customizing the list view, you can select what fields you want in the preferences and reorder them there too. Or did you have something else in mind?

OK...but One Major Flaw

You have always been free to freely type in whatever genres you wished in Books. The pull down list was merely a set of suggestions. However, 3.0a9 has been updated so that the suggestions provided by the drop down are editable in the preferences.

PALM Conduit

I'm interested in implementing this feature. However, I've never programmed Palm devices. If you would like to help me cook some stuff up, send me an e-mail at books@aetherial.net. -Chris

Re: Still needs work

Other users have requested that I look into including other databases when populating fields. I've very interested in this, so if you have any databases that you would like this application to communicate with, please send me the names to books@aetherial.net. Regarding the "Complete View" for the collection, I agree. There is a limited version of this under the "Collection" menu, but I do intend to beef it up. What types of fields would you like…
