Flip4Mac WMV 2.3.0.11 (Mac OS X)
I just downloaded it and it mounted and installed just fine. For those of you saying WMV files work in QuickTime under Snow Leopard without Flip4Mac: My tests after uninstalling Flip4Mac conflict with that assessment. I could not get QuickTime Player to open either a WMV stream or a WMV file. [alert admin]

InkLevel 1.05 (Mac OS X)
On the positive side, it works for getting levels from my CM1312nfi Color LaserJet MFP connected on the network and my DeskJet 935C connected via a USB network hub. It also hasn't crashed as of yet. However, I rarely use the DeskJet and I can get the levels for the Color LaserJet via the print dialog and Print & Fax preferences, so it's really not worth the $5 to me. It's also a little ugly. Lucky 7 Slots 1.0 (iPhone)
This would be a perfect candidate for using the accelerometer. Rather than tapping a button to spin the reels, you could use a pulling motion with the phone. [alert admin]

WeatherLink 5.0.3b (Mac OS X)
This software has always been horrendous. It doesn't come anywhere close to having feature parity with the Windows version. Do yourself a favor and try WeatherTracker: even in its beta form, it's far and away a better package. [alert admin]

MPEG Streamclip 1.8 (Mac OS X)
Best DVD-to-H.264 video converter I've found ![]()

I am really impressed with this app for DVD to H.264 conversions. It handles multiple VOB files with ease and the results are nice and bright, unlike most other apps I've found which tend to give very dark video results. I suspect this is due to MPEG Streamclip using the QuickTime encoder whereas most other apps use the ffmpeg or x264 encoders. The only thing it doesn't handle that's of interest to me is DVD subtitles, so I'll have to use another app for that. Luckily, very few movies have subtitles that are necessary to enjoy the movie (e.g. Star Wars Episode 4). [alert admin]

When I try to launch it on my MacBook Pro, it crashes. See my first comment for details (I didn't want to clutter up the top-level reviews). [alert admin]

Canon CanoScan LiDE 30 7.0.1.1X (Mac OS X)
The versions of the shared libraries are newer than the ones I had installed, which were the latest prior to this update. It's almost as if they found these back in a corner somewhere, noticed that they were newer versions, and released them. [alert admin]

Apple Digital Camera RAW Support update (Mac OS X)
I was lamenting the fact that the 10.4.8 update did not have RAW support for my Canon Digital Rebel XTi, thinking that I'd have to wait until at least 10.4.9. Imagine my surprise when I learned that Apple was releasing an interim update to support it. So far, it works just fine in iPhoto 6.0.5 and Preview. Thanks, Apple! [alert admin]

Fan Control 1.1 (Mac OS X)
More control than smcFanControl ![]()

I have tried both FanControl and smcFanControl and much prefer FanControl. First of all, it installs as a System Preference pane so that you don't need to have a GUI-based application running at all times to guarantee that the adjustments survive across sleep-wake cycles. Secondly, it allows you to adjust the temperature thresholds at which the fans kick in as well as the fan speeds. Like smcFanControl, it will only let you make adjustments that will make your system run cooler, never warmer. [alert admin]

I initially gave this app 5 stars, but I've retracted that review in favor of this one. I'm going to have to deduct one star due to the fact that upon waking my 15" MBP from sleep, the fan speed reverted back to the default. It will earn 5 stars when it is fixed to reapply the fan speed setting when the computer wakes from sleep. [alert admin]

And this is Airfoil's fault how? It's unfair to give an app designed for audio a bad review just because it doesn't do something that it has no control over. If you must blame someone, blame the media player developers who don't design audio/video desynchronization into their apps, which is required to compensate for the Airport Express's audio prebuffering lag.

Slow restarts are typical after kernel extensions are updated. The OS has to reload the extensions without benefit of the cache that gets built after they're loaded the first time.

The app should spawn a background process then
It worked, but the app really should launch a faceless background process to prevent accidental quitting of the fan control code (I don't like to run any more foreground apps than I have to). Options could be added to the app's foreground process to start and stop the background process.

Alas, this update doesn't contain RAW support for the Canon Digital Rebel XTi either. I can't fault Adobe too much since the camera just started shipping earlier this month and it takes time to reverse engineer the RAW format and test the software.

I wanted to make one minor nit-picky correction to my review: It's the base station login dialog that was defaulting to storing the password in the keychain, not the network login. It appears to be a moot point anyway now that 1.1.2 is out, although I haven't tried it yet.
