MacPAR deLuxe 2.6 (Mac OS X)

Problems with non-admin user accounts

It seems that version 2.6 introduced a problem whereby the program will not launch if you are logged in as a non-administrator user. In version 2.51, you could get around this by placing a copy of the app in the user's home directory and using that one, but that doesn't work with 2.6. A pity. This is a great program otherwise. XPlay 1.0 (Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000)

A lot of questions...

I've been using XPlay to listen to music on my Mac-formatted iPod through my PC since the early beta versions. Over that time, I've had an interesting love/hate relationship with the product. I love XPlay when it works: - My iPod mounts flawlessly and I can play all MP3's via WMP. - I've used Xplay with Win98, Win2K and WinXP, all with good results. - The speed of the app has improved dramatically over time. There are also soem bad things that people should be aware of: - Every time Apple updates the iPod firmware, Xplay breaks. - When Apple updates iTunes, Xplay breaks ~ 50% of the time. - It typically takes anywhere from 1 to 5 days for MediaFour to update Xplay after such a change. - XPlay doesn't add the capability to play any file that WMP couldn't play by itself. Ergo, you can't listen to Protected-AAC files through your PC. - Once version 2.0 of Xplay was released, support for version 1 was killed immediately. Since Apple issued an iPod firmware update less than 2 months after Xplay 2.0 came out, many people who bought version 1 less than 6 months ago are being forced to buy a $15 upgrade to version 2.0. Not even Microsoft is this brutal. [alert admin]

MacPAR deLuxe 2.4.3 (Mac OS X)

Stuck in a loop with Par2?

Has anyone seen an issue where the "Verifying the files" stage of the program just keeps on running? I have 8 rar segs, one of them has and invalid checksum. I also have 8 valid PAR2 files. The program finds all of this, but it's now been stuck on "Verifying the files" for 20 minutes. Bottom reads: Total 8 Good 7 Need 0 blocks = 0 bytes. Otherwise, never had a problem with this invaluable program. Please reward the author! [alert admin]

MT-NewsWatcher 3.2 (Mac OS X)

This version definitely…

has a stability issue or two, but it's stupendous to see MT-NewsWatcher finally run native in OS X. Two wishes: 1) Binary downloads should be disconnected from the article list windows so that you can close an article list window and have the binary transfers keep going. This is probably the only thing that Thoth does better. 2) Build a UU decoder into the app. This is obviously already done to some degree because images have to be decoded before they can be displayed in-line. Great work, Simon! You're an invaluable asset to the Mac community! [alert admin]
