Dejal Simon 2.2.1 (Mac OS X)

Fantastic software

I wasn't expecting too much when I started using Simon; I had used various open source monitoring packages and figured Simon was just going to be a nice GUI to do basically the same thing. I WAS WRONG. Simon is full of nice touches and is a very polished package. The flexibility in setting up a variety of tests and customising the different notifications is simply amazing. And it is so easy to configure. The developer is also very helpful and responsive. This is by far the best software I have purchased this year (& maybe will be all year). But more to the point, it has already saved me money by giving me a notification about a misbehaving server before the problem became a serious issue. [alert admin]

CocoaMySQL 0.5 (Mac OS X)

Excellent client for mySQL

Everything I could say about this excellent program has already been said by others. So I'll just add my experience; compared with all other mySQL clients I have tried, CocoaMySQL has the simplest, yet full-featured interface of them all. It has replaced all the other SQL utilities in my dock. [alert admin]

Mailsmith 2.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Mail database better than Entourage

Mailsmith does use a propritary database, but it is not one huge database like Entourage uses, each mailbox is a separate database. And the latest version of Mailsmith does not require backing up the whole mail package; the modified date of each mailbox is only changed if the mailbox changes. So backups should be much smaller now. And on top of that, the database is MUCH more stable than previous versions. Overall, I am very pleased with the speed and stability of mail storage in Mailsmith. [alert admin]

xMahjongg Select 1.0.1 (Mac OS X)

path is not hardcoded

The path is not really hardcoded; it just defaults to /sw/bin/xmahjongg since most users seem to be using Fink. You can change it in Prefs to whatever is right for your system. And if you have PATH setup properly, then just enter "xmahjongg" and it will be found. Note that the PATH setup in shell rc files (eg .bashrc) doesn't apply to GUI apps; you need to setup the .MacOSX/environment.plist instead. (See http://developer.apple.com/qa/qa2001/qa1067.html for more details on setting environment variables for GUI processes.) [alert admin]

xMahjongg Select 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Doesn't Remember Path...

The problem with the path not being remembered has been reported by others. It is not a problem for all users as prefs are being read. I will release a new version as soon as I can find and fix the problem. [This was also posted as a developer note which doesn't seem to be appearing.] [alert admin]

xMahjongg Select 1.0 (Mac OS X)

xmahjongg not located (fix in prefs)

That means that your PATH is not setup to search the directory containing xmahjongg. Click the Prefs button (in xMahjongg Select) and enter the full path to your copy of xmahjongg. If you installed xmahjongg using Fink, then that would be /sw/bin/xmahjongg. And if you are not using Apple's X11, then you will also need to change the name of the X11 App to XDarwin or whatever you are using. [alert admin]

Mailsmith 2.0 (Mac OS X)

Absolutely fantastic

This is the best email program I have seen! Anyone who is finding problems (other than IMAP support) should read the manual or wait for assistance for BBSW support. For example, 'epc' said that addresses would only import one by one; did you read pg 61 of the manual which explains a few different methods of importing addresses (including in bulk). Also, be patient with responses from support, they just released a new version of Mailsmith and have LOTS of emails to answer. They are very good at giving useful answers to support queries, but give them time to do so. Really... I can't believe so many people are not giving Mailsmith a fair chance before dismissing it or giving it a bad review. I agree it is not for everyone, but that doesn't mean it's not an EXCELLENT program; it only means it's the not the right program for you. Switching from Eudora (after 7 years of usage) to Mailsmith was one of the best decisions I ever made. Once I learned to take advantage of the many features in Mailsmith, I discovered one of the most elegant programs I've ever used. C'mon everyone, give it a chance before dismissing it. [alert admin]

Navicat 4.2.1 (Mac OS X)

I agree with Josh A. "web based = dog slow"

CaptainScarlet22 must live in an ideal world. I have checked my connection many times (as has Telstra) and it's the best I'm going to have without moving house. So the comment phpMyAdmin is web based = dog slow... much better to have a native app is completely accurate. I look forward to trying Navicat. (Although I have a couple of others that I am already happy with. CocoaMySQL is much faster than any of the others I've tried.) [alert admin]

MenuMeters 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Very polished and useful

The more I use MenuMeters, the more I like it. It's a very polished app. I can now reclaim some of my dock real estate used by other utilities. I have a small issue with one of the meters, but the developer has already replied with some suggestions for finding the problem. [alert admin]

Overseer 1.2 (Mac OS X)

I love the…

simple interface with all the info I want to see. It has crashed on me a few times (either when sorting by column and/or with open Internet Connections window) so only 4 stars for now. Feature request: a double-click in Internet Connections window should run 'host' or 'traceroute' in Terminal (or copy IP address for pasting into Terminal). [alert admin]
