Alias Archive 1.0.3 (Mac OS X)
# cd destdir # find /Volumes/sourcedir -exec ln -s {} \; Warning: I have not tested the above, but it's all there for free if you don't need a GUI, progress bar, and $15... [alert admin]

iCalViewer 2.1.3 (Mac OS X)
"List View" consistently crashes on Leopard 10.5.1. This is not actually a "review," so I can't give it a rating, but it seems to me that any product that's worth while should at least have all the menu items working. [alert admin]

ImageMagick 5.1.1 (Mac OS X)
This is a command-line suite of programs -- don't download it if you want a slick GUI. That said, it is a wonderful tool for modifying images via scripts, which is great for batch processing. How much time would you spend re-sizing a folder full of images, using Photoshop? With ImageMagick, it's one command line. If you need to manipulate images from a script, this is the tool for you. You can even call it from PHP to manipulate images on-the-fly on a website, for generating thumbnail images, for example. [alert admin]

Adobe Photoshop CS3 10.0 (Mac OS X)
Just Say No to companies who treat their customers like thieves! Adobe wants to be Microsoft when they grow up. Too bad, because concept-wise, others are beginning to leave them in the dust. Give Aperture the free 30-day trial. It does about 85% of what I used to do in Photoshop, PLUS a lot of things Photoshop can't touch. [alert admin]

Perfect Diet Tracker 1.3.0.0 (Mac OS X)
How about nutritional information?
I suppose knowing calories, fat, and carbohydrates is useful, but this would be so much more useful if it had a good nutritional database. Many dieters suffer from poor nutrition because they eat particular foods that meet their fat and/or carbohydrate needs, without regards to vitamins, amino acids, and minerals. Anyone know of a good nutritional database? Even in spreadsheet or tab-delim form? I'm tired of pulling out my old Adelle Davis books whenever I want to know the nutritional value of a food item. MConvert 7.0.1 (Mac OS X)
What I would like to see in this or any other units converter is a means for entering arbitrary conversions, even if it means editing a plist or something. Linear conversions should be trivial to do this way, by entering slope and intercept numbers: y=mx+b.
Non-linear conversions would require a scripting language, but something like the open-source FScript could be embedded pretty simply. [alert admin]

Baywatch 1.0b3 (Mac OS X)
When used, it always says "Baywatch can't find an ebay auction in your front most browser window," no matter what I do. I've logged out/in, rebooted -- you name it. I recently did a software update (MacOS 10.4.2), but I cannot pinpoint the problem with that event. [alert admin]

PictureItPostage 1.0 (Mac OS X)
Their Mac products are consistently priced above their Windows products, and deliver less functionality. Call, email, or write Endicia and let them know you will not use their products until there is AT LEAST price parity, and preferably price-performance parity. They are the only kid on the block for Mac users who want to do their own postage, but they are wrong to soak Mac users for the privilege of using their product. For two years' difference in price, you can buy an old Windows box at a garage sale. Tell Endicia that you are going to buy an old Windows box for your postage needs, AND THEN BUY A COMPETITOR'S PRODUCT, until Endicia starts treating the Mac market with some respect. [alert admin]

ProjectForum 4.4.0 (Mac OS X)
This is for people with more money than time. What really killed it for me is the hosting fees! If you run your own webserver, you can install MediaWiki for free and have the same superb software used by http://www.wikipedia.com and with EXCELLENT free support via their mailing list. If you don't want to run a webserver, you can still use MediaWiki for free at http://www.wikicities.com but you'll have a few unobtrusive ads on your site. The wiki concept takes a while to grok, but it is really powerful once you get going. I'm in the process of converting nearly all my static pages on my website to wiki pages. [alert admin]

SafariSorter 3.4 (Mac OS X)
Does what it says it does, at a price I'm already paying! (Guarding our civil liberties.)
I don't understand the whiners at all. They seem to have reviewed it without actually triyng it. I sorted and analyzed 1294 bookmarks, and it behaved exactly as expected. There is a means for defeating on a per-bookmark basis that works well. The nay-sayer's arguments can be summed up as: "What if I don't want my bookmarks sorted?" THEN DON'T USE IT!
If they'd read the documentation, they'd know what dup removal does, which it does quite well. In particular, it let me remove several bookmark dups where I had renamed one, which I never would have caught manually without actually reviewing the URLs.
My only (very minor) quibble -- the author is hard to get hold of. No where in the product or the website linked to the product is an email or feedback form that I could find! I wanted to let him know how much I liked his product, but I had to come here to get the contact email address.

Note that the download link loads the Intel version. The universal installer is available from the developer's site.

I reported this as a bug waaay back when MacOS X first came out -- what would that be, PS 7? The last Photoshop I bought was PS8 -- the first CS version. With CS2, they put "phone home" authorization in, and I refuse to buy anything from a company that treats its customers like criminals. Then I got Aperture, and am mostly happy as a clam. It doesn't totally replace Photoshop, but as a photographer, it…

Aw man! I've got an Apple IIe that I was planning to run the latest Safari on! Boy, Apple really sucks for not supporting older hardware! :-) Get a grip. Or better yet, get a Wintel machine. Then you'll REALLY experience "hardware thrash." IDC reports that Macs stay in service at least 50% longer. But the bottom line is, computers obsolesce. Get over it.

Huh? Someone is "forcing" you to upgrade? Boy, you must be on crack! I'm still running 9.2 on one machine! No one put a gun to my head and said, "You must upgrade."
