MailSteward 8.0 (Mac OS X)
I bought MailSteward on 10/27/07. The mailsteward.com web site reads: "Upgrades to new versions are free for all registered users of MailSteward." The FAQ page reads: "The current policy is that all registered users get free upgrades." Yet they want to charge me $20 for an upgrade. I wrote the author. His response: "What can I say? Maintaining and upgrading the software takes time and money." Clearly, software publishers need to make a living. But they shouldn't promise something for free and then charge you for it. Bracketeer 2.7 (Mac OS X)
Bracketeer is an excellent tool for creating and manipulating high dynamic range (HDR) images. For example, it will allow me to take several images of a scene using different exposure values. Using Bracketeer I can combine the images into a single HDR image with incredible detail across the entire image. Check out Pangea's web site and also see episode #9 of This Week in Photography to see what HDR images are all about. You can't beat the price. [alert admin]

TrueCrypt 5.0 (Mac OS X)
TrueCrypt has been around for a while on the Windows platform. I first learned about it when the great "Security Now" podcast <http://www.grc.com/securitynow.htm> devoted an entire episode to it. TrueCrypt is now available for OS X and there's a new GUI version for Linux. This is great! I use Truecrypt to encrypt the data on my many USB Flash Drives. I can now use these encrypted flash drives on all three platforms. TrueCrypt can encrypt entire volumes, partitions, or you can create an encrypted file (kind of like a disk image) onto which you can store your most important data. There is so much that TrueCrypt does. I have only scratched the surface. Listen to the Security Now podcast on TrueCrypt. The TrueCrypt is extremely thorough, but needs to be completely updated for Mac and Linux. [alert admin]

SuperDuper! 2.5 (Mac OS X)
SuperDuper continues to be the very best, most reliable way to backup a Mac OS X System. While a fully Leopard compatible version took some time, the folks at Shirt Pocket worked hard to be absolutely sure they got it right and dealt with all the nuances of 10.5. Thanks for keeping your users apprised on your blog. Time Machine has its place but on my system it will never replace SuperDuper. [alert admin]

Geekbench 2.0.6 (Mac OS X)
I tried Geekbench. It seems cool, but I can't justify paying $20 for it. [alert admin]

GraphicConverter X 6.0 (Mac OS X)
I have been using GraphicConverter since the beginning. It is incredibly powerful. Anyone who subscribes to the GC mailing list knows how active GraphicConverter development is. It is a constantly evolving program. Thorsten Lempke seems to devote his life to this software. I own Photoshop CS3 but I still use GraphicConverter for many tasks. I paid full price for GC in 1996. I was happy to pay for an upgrade in 2002. I will happily pay for this upgrade. [alert admin]

VisualHub 1.21 (Mac OS X)
VisualHub is a fantastic, must-have utility for converting just about any movie file of any size and type to whatever format you want. In my case, I convert any video file I want to 320 pixel wide AVI for my Creative Vision M MP3 Player. The developer is very responsive to ideas -- just check out the VisualHub discussion forum on his site. Some have criticized this product for being merely a "front end" to open source video conversion software. Maybe that's true, but the convenience and power of VisualHub makes it work every penny. In fact, I bought two licenses!! Great program! Try out the demo!! [alert admin]

Xtorrent Beta 3 (29) (Mac OS X)
I downloaded Xtorrent last night. Today, they posted beta 3 build 29. It's got a terrific interface. I have had no issues at all with it and I like it better than the free alternatives. The introductory pricing seems very reasonable too. -- I'm no expert and I'd like to better understand the relationship between Xtorrent and Acquisition (both from this developer). I haven't found any documentation, but I guess the interface is so clean I may not need it. [alert admin]

iClip 4 (Mac OS X)
I see from the release notes that there are "many bug fixes". I'm very reluctant to install v4 because the interface looks like it will be awkward, slow and clunky (much like their web site... almost painful.) Can anyone share experience whether this program will run smoothly on a 1.42 GHz G4? I suppose I'm looking for someone to convince me why I should upgrade. (Also, what is the upgrade fee? I haven't found that yet.) [alert admin]

Intego ContentBarrier X4 10.4.1 (Mac OS X)
I have been using Intego ContentBarrier X4 for over a year. It's installed on the "Family eMac" and it works very well. Each of my kids has different settings which only I control. ContentBarrier successfully prevents the kids from stumbling onto web sites I wouldn't want them to see. ContentBarrier even sends me an email periodically telling me what sites were blocked for each kid! The kids' chats are monitored against preditors and their email is monitored as well. The ability to configure each kid's settings separately is powerful. The older kids get more privledges and the settings for the younger kids are a little more strict. Adults who use the computer aren't monitored at all. -- I looked long and hard for software which would help me ensure the kids have a positive experience online. Thus far, I have found nothing better. Contrary to the last couple posts, I have had no stability problems whatsoever. I'm running OS X 10.4 on a busy machine and ContentBarrier seems to deliver what it promises. (I do wish it were a little less expensive.) [alert admin]

I have reconsidered! The value offered on the Geekbench web site makes the 19.95 price tag worth while. GeekBench works well, is supported on multiple platforms, and offers a well-designed and well-maintained web site where typical results for a particular machine can be found.

When I gave FoxTrot Personal Search a first look, I had some difficulty making it work properly. It crashed during the indexing phase. I posted my findings online here. I am delighted to report that the good people at CTM Development contacted me almost immediately. They were anxious to help turn my experience with FoxTrot into a positive one. Since that time, CTM Development helped me understand that my problems were not with FoxTrot itself, but with…
