Alarm Clock Pro 9.0 (Mac OS X)

I own the previous version. Not paying for a bug fix!

Pretty incredible really... They call this a paid upgrade when all they have done is fix 10 bugs and made a modification to the power manager "...as it should have been before." For that, you want $10? That just doesn't seem right. [alert admin]

FoldersSynchronizer 3.6.4 (Mac OS X)

Excellent for many uses

When I bought FoldersSynchronizer I thought I'd use it to sync a folder on my MacBook Pro with a folder on a large flash drive. Then, I discovered it is an EXCELLENT tool when trying to recover data from a damaged drive. I do a lot of data recovery and FoldersSynchronizer has worked great as a way to repeatedly scan a damaged drive, harvesting any files it can and ignoring files it has already successfully recovered. Now, I'm using FoldersSynchronizer to sync the documents folders on my MacBook Pro and my Mac Pro. I like previewing what it's going to do before it does it. This software is rock-solid (in my experience) and I highly recommend it. [alert admin]

PDFClerk Pro 3.2 (Mac OS X)

Excellent alternative to PDF Pen & Acrobat Pro

This is not going to be a comprehensive review. But I feel the need to comment on this application. I have been using PDFClerk Pro (and the non-pro version) for a couple years. It's a great way to assemble a PDF file from lots of different files. I upgraded to the pro version a while back partly to show my support for the company but also because I wanted the ability to add my own annotations (text boxes, highlights, shapes, etc) to existing PDF documents. I also looked at a product called PDF Pen, but comments about support problems scared me away. PDFClerk Pro has done everything I have asked of it. It just works! I believe I have only begun to scratch the surface of this program's potential. There are many features I haven't yet explored. For the user who wants to assemble PDF's from files of varying types and the user who wants to annotate existing PDF's this is a great program (and less expensive than the $449 Acrobat Pro!). THE BEST PART: The thing I like best about PDFClerk and PDFClerk Pro is the exceptional customer support. There are so many bad customer support experiences every day in this world. SintraWorks' António Nunes provides extraordinary support. Use the SintraWorks suport forums. You will receive a quick answer to your question. The answer will be complete, well thought out, and easy to understand.] Nice job!! IN SUMMARY: The program is stable and works well. The support is excellent. [alert admin]

iNotePad 2.4.1 (Mac OS X)

Does it work for the iPod Touch?

I just downloaded iNotePad 2.4.1. This looks like a fantastic app, but I mainly want to use it to sync notes with my 32gb iPod Touch. When I try, iNotePad says "No iPod Connected". Am I missing something, or is the iPod Touch not supported? [alert admin]

MailSteward 8.0 (Mac OS X)

Uprade Policy

I bought MailSteward on 10/27/07. The mailsteward.com web site reads: "Upgrades to new versions are free for all registered users of MailSteward." The FAQ page reads: "The current policy is that all registered users get free upgrades." Yet they want to charge me $20 for an upgrade. I wrote the author. His response: "What can I say? Maintaining and upgrading the software takes time and money." Clearly, software publishers need to make a living. But they shouldn't promise something for free and then charge you for it. Excellent tool at a low price

Bracketeer is an excellent tool for creating and manipulating high dynamic range (HDR) images. For example, it will allow me to take several images of a scene using different exposure values. Using Bracketeer I can combine the images into a single HDR image with incredible detail across the entire image. Check out Pangea's web site and also see episode #9 of This Week in Photography to see what HDR images are all about. You can't beat the price. [alert admin]

TrueCrypt 5.0 (Mac OS X)

Finally! TrueCrypt for OS X

TrueCrypt has been around for a while on the Windows platform. I first learned about it when the great "Security Now" podcast <http://www.grc.com/securitynow.htm> devoted an entire episode to it. TrueCrypt is now available for OS X and there's a new GUI version for Linux. This is great! I use Truecrypt to encrypt the data on my many USB Flash Drives. I can now use these encrypted flash drives on all three platforms. TrueCrypt can encrypt entire volumes, partitions, or you can create an encrypted file (kind of like a disk image) onto which you can store your most important data. There is so much that TrueCrypt does. I have only scratched the surface. Listen to the Security Now podcast on TrueCrypt. The TrueCrypt is extremely thorough, but needs to be completely updated for Mac and Linux. [alert admin]

SuperDuper 2.5 (Mac OS X)

Great Things Take Time...

SuperDuper continues to be the very best, most reliable way to backup a Mac OS X System. While a fully Leopard compatible version took some time, the folks at Shirt Pocket worked hard to be absolutely sure they got it right and dealt with all the nuances of 10.5. Thanks for keeping your users apprised on your blog. Time Machine has its place but on my system it will never replace SuperDuper. [alert admin]

Geekbench 2.0.6 (Mac OS X)

Costs too much.

I tried Geekbench. It seems cool, but I can't justify paying $20 for it. [alert admin]

GraphicConverter X 6.0 (Mac OS X)

Incredible Software

I have been using GraphicConverter since the beginning. It is incredibly powerful. Anyone who subscribes to the GC mailing list knows how active GraphicConverter development is. It is a constantly evolving program. Thorsten Lempke seems to devote his life to this software. I own Photoshop CS3 but I still use GraphicConverter for many tasks. I paid full price for GC in 1996. I was happy to pay for an upgrade in 2002. I will happily pay for this upgrade. [alert admin]

Costs too much.

I have reconsidered! The value offered on the Geekbench web site makes the 19.95 price tag worth while. GeekBench works well, is supported on multiple platforms, and offers a well-designed and well-maintained web site where typical results for a particular machine can be found.

Doesn't work for me

When I gave FoxTrot Personal Search a first look, I had some difficulty making it work properly. It crashed during the indexing phase. I posted my findings online here. I am delighted to report that the good people at CTM Development contacted me almost immediately. They were anxious to help turn my experience with FoxTrot into a positive one. Since that time, CTM Development helped me understand that my problems were not with FoxTrot itself, but with…
