Adobe Flash Player 10.1.51.45 (Mac OS X)
This version actually INCREASED CPU usage on my computer (as if Flash could possibly get any worse). It also freezes when you right-click a video and go to Settings. Buggy beta. Stick with the real version for now. [alert admin]

Oligo 7.19 (Mac OS X)
What are the benefits of this software over primer3 and other things that are available for free on the web? [alert admin]

Apple iTunes 7.0.2 (Mac OS X)
7.0.2 is MUCH more responsive than 7.0.1 on my iBook G4. I had a problem with 7.0.0 and 7.0.1 where if I pushed one of the iTunes control buttons (play, ff, rew), it would not respond until I moved the mouse. The button would just sit there, darkened, because it had been pushed, but nothing would happen until I moved the mouse. Even a move of one pixel was enough to make the button work, but without that, it would sit there doing nothing, presumably forever. That problem has been cleared up with 7.0.2. And it just seems much more responsive all around. A worthwhile download. [alert admin]

MultiAlarm 3.3.1 (Mac OS X)
The developer has done an excellent job of addressing every single problem that I mentioned in my previous post. Now that it is possible to prevent the computer from going to sleep when you close the lid, this program has become invaluable. Two things I would still like to see implemented: 1) The volume should be completely locked when the "Screen Lock" is on. I know that it is possible to disable the screen brightness and volume keys, because Apple does this when your screensaver appears (if you use a screensaver password). 2) To reduce Dock clutter, I still like the idea of having this program run in the menu bar or run invisibly in the background and accessed through a keyboard shortcut (similar to QuickSilver.) But this is just a personal preference. Thanks to the developer for an otherwise outstanding product. [alert admin]

MultiAlarm 3.2 (Mac OS X)
There are still some serious bugs with this program. 1) MultiAlarm asks you for your password when you choose MultiAlarm->Quit MultiAlarm, but it DOESN'T ask you for your password if you just right-click the icon in the dock and choose "Quit". This is a fundamental security flaw for such a program. 2) The program increases the volume IN PHASES when the alarm goes off: it doesn't stay set to the maximum level. This means that if you decrease the volume using the button on your laptop (F4 on my Japanese iBook), the program will slowly increase the volume back to the maximum, however, it doesn't increase it fast enough. It's therefore possible to mute the alarm if you use the "decrease volume" button fast enough, which is exactly what I imagine an attacker would try first in response to the alarm. 3) Because the program appears in the dock, it is easy for an attacker to tell that the program is running (if they are at all familiar with it). This would possibly be useful as a deterrent if MultiAlarm were secure, but it's not. See bug #1. Because I hide my dock, however, it's not so useful for me. I believe this program would be better (and clutter u pmy dock less) if it ran in the menu bar. 4) I'm unable to change my alarm sound. No matter which one I select, I always get "lost.mp3". 5) I'm unable to set a custom background image. (I tried using a custom-made 1024 by 768 background and it just wouldn't show.) I always get the black screen with the lock. Of course, in all likelihood, if someone steals your laptop, they're going to close it first anyway, so the whole thing is kind of moot. [alert admin]

iDefrag 1.2.1 (Mac OS X)
You don't need defrag software for Mac OS X
This program and its ilk are completely unnecessary. Apple says so themselves. See: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25668 and: http://www.tidbits.com/tb-issues/TidBITS-686.html#lnk3 [alert admin]

Synergy 2.7 (Mac OS X)
Don't even bother with this program. Once you've installed the iTunes plug-in, Quicksilver does the same thing and MUCH MUCH more, and it's free. [alert admin]

WordLookup 3.19 (Mac OS X)
For those of you who only use the Japanese (or Chinese) features of this dictionary, there's a MUCH better alternative to this program. Try JEDict. Unlike WordLookup, it allows unlimited search of the two primary dictionaries, even if the program is not registered. It also allows you to look up individual kanji using a number of different methods, including handwriting input. It's shareware, but there are no registration nag warnings. http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/14095 I used to use Wordlookup until I found this program. If you're willing to pay for the program, or even if you're not, JEDict is a MUCH better choice. [alert admin]

httpmail plugin 1.47a (Mac OS X)
My httpmail worked fine until this morning, now it hangs the entire mail program upon launch. I have to force quit. After uninstalling, as per the readme, Mail launches fine, so the problem is definitely with httpmail. [alert admin]

This version is for Snow Leopard only. Pay no attention to anything VersionTracker tells you about what version of Mac OS X a program is designed to run on. If you're using Leopard, you need Onyx 2.0.5.

Keynote & Numbers -good Pages - bleh.
Agreed. Pages is much easier to use than Word (esp. Word 2008), and the results look great.

Does not support essential encodings
The original poster is confused because the program does not support Chinese, Japanese, Korean (etc.) input. I don't think it's an encoding issue, just an input issue. And yes, as far as I'm concerned, that renders the program entirely unusable.

No, *DO* bother - Synergy is GREAT
I used Synergy for about six months before I figured out I could do the same thing with QS for free, and without an extra program running in the background stealing my RAM. I'm willing to admit that it has more features than QS's iTunes plugin, but there's not one single feature of Synergy WORTH dishing out $10 for. What, I'm going to pay $10 so I can see the album art when I hit…

Uh, I installed it exactly as the instructions said the first time. It's not difficult; you just use the installer app. And as you'll see from other posts, it IS a problem with the plugin. Apparently, it hangs the whole mail app when it can't connect to the server to check for updates. The author should add a time-out function if it can't connect within 5 seconds or something.

Great, thanks. That solved the problem. Guess it must just hang when waiting for the server. Another poster said that the server is often down.
