WindowShade X 3.0 (Mac OS X)

Hmm...

This'll be my last word on this. If you want to continue the discussion with me, fine, but come find me and we can continue in e-mail if you like. I'm not that hard to find. :)

I'm sorry you feel a need to defend Unsanity with personal attacks on anyone that would dare to criticize or question them. That's too bad. And no, I don't do this behind their back. This conversation has been had on the carbon list as well and between Rosyna and myself.

It's simply not true that apps that patch have never impacted other apps. You don't have to believe me, then ask the developers. I can find numerous examples of instances where Default Folder for example has caused problems. Likewise with many of the Haxies. Just read the release notes, or macfixit or even just ask the developers like Unsanity. And please, let's not make this personal. I know very well how code injection works. It's no secret, you can go read wolf's papers yourself if you want.

Again, it just amazes me that you'll put up with this kind of stuff like "incompatible app exclusion lists". That's just bring OS 9 back to OS X. It's it really worth it to have some old OS 9 feature that isn't in OS X? Must be, these things are enormously popular. sigh

All I want is disclosure. If you want to risk code that patches fine. But most users probably don't and don't understand the risks of software like this. (And don't blame "lame dumb users". The idea, the beauty of OS X, is that you don't have to a programmer to use it. You shouldn't have to read wolf's papers and understand mach ports, you shouldn't have to figure out on your own that Haxies are patching.) Average users simply blame crashes on OS X or the app when instead its the thing patching. And yes, this has happened. many developers on the carbon list have talked about getting bug reports only to find that it was a haxie or default folder. Unsanity is not made up of perfect programmers. Good programers yes, probably even great programmers. I just choose to disagree ethically with the code they write.

Last note: no I have never intalled any haxie, but the VT interface doesn't have an option for "never used" for the "Used Product For" pop-up. I have to choose something, so I choose one day. [alert admin]

WindowShade X 3.0 (Mac OS X)

Why do people install this stuff?

Does this stuff remind you of Mac OS 9 of what?

  • Extension conflicts
  • Application conflicts
  • OS conflicts

Gee, all the work on OS X and we still have misguided developers trying to patch the system which just destablizes everything. Wonderful.

And here I thought the bad ole days of OS 9 were behind us. Haven't we learned anything?

Shame on you Unsanity. [alert admin]

3D Bridge Deluxe 2.0.1 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

cuzog: Actually, it…

should be v2.0.2, 2.0.1 was not generally released. (I've contacted FV and they should be getting this updated here on VT shortly). As for 2.0.2 no changes were actually made to bridge itself (or any of the 3D games), but they all include the new GameSmith 3.3 which provides MANY new features (so in that respect all the games picked up a huge number of new features). You can get all the details at http://www.gamesmith.biz/whatsnew [alert admin]

3D Bridge Deluxe 2.0.1 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

macFan: network play…

is what really sets the 3D Deluxe games apart from the rest. I'm the current "maintainer" of the 3D Deluxe games and I hope to get time to improve the bot play, but the fact of the matter is that the online play with other humans is where the game really shines. Give GameSmith a try, you'll love it (and there are a number of regular bridge players online so I'm sure you'll find some games!) [alert admin]

3D Hearts Deluxe 7.2 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

I'm sorry you…

deleted it because of a lack of LAN play. LAN play was removed when the games went to Mac OS X because of a lack of AppleTalk support in the original Mac OS X 10.0. Now that Apple has unwrapped Rendezvous, we are in the process of updating GameSmith (and thus all the 3D Deluxe card games) to use this for LAN play. We'd like to have something in the next few weeks. [alert admin]

Colin's Classic Cards 1.1 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

These games have…

been replaced now by the newer 3D Deluxe card games from Freeverse. You can visit their web site at http://www.freeverse.com or search for 3D Deluxe here on VersionTracker. Upgrades from CCC to the new 3D games are free I believe. [alert admin]

3D Bridge Deluxe 2.0 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

diclaimer: I'm one…

of the current developers on 3D Bridge Deluxe ---------------------- "when your robot partner is declarer, you are dummy and are not allowed to make any decisions or control the play -- you just have to sit there " --- You can change this behavior in the Preferences and choose to play the dummy's hand. ---------------------- "There are also problems with the display of your hand & dummy's hand they often display both red suits adjacent or both black suits" --- Hmm, I don't think I've seen that offhand, however in the next release we're looking at allowing you to customize how the cards are organized in your hand (everyone has their own personal style). ---------------------- "Also the display of the scorepad is abbreviated and not formatted like a scorepad you would use at a table. " --- Hmm, it's a pretty extended score pad? Have you tried clicking the zoom box to zoom it out and reveal the additional, more detailed, score pad information? ---------------------- "The AI is not a very good bidder" --- Yes, the AI is weakness (you really should try playing online against others, that's where it shines!). That said, Freeverse recently announced that we had signed a contract with a UCLA Phd candidate in computer science. His speciality? Artifical Intelligence as applied to game theory. He'll be working on the AI for all the 3D Deluxe card games. We're VERY excited about this. ---------------------- "Anyone seriously interested in practicing bridge should...." --- And of course, I'd recommend trying the online play against real people :) ---------------------- Thanks for the feedback though, it let's us know what we need to improve on (e.g. more clearly documenting in the help the various UI issues you raised above). But, beyond all this, please feel free to make specific product suggestion [alert admin]

I just tried downloading and it worked just fine.

Thanks for the kind words -- we put a lot of time and effort into the .3 release.

Why do misguided users gripe about things they know NOTHING about?

I am curious why Brian would make a snide comment about WindowShade or any of Unsanity's haxies. I have used them all (haxies) and have NEVER found any instability caused on ANY of the 18 various Macs I manage and use.

Don't take my word for it. Ask Unsanity. They'll tell you: there have been dozens of extension, application and OS conflicts with their "haxies". It is probably documented in their version notes. Ask other developers…
