You Control: Tunes 1.5.2 (Mac OS X)

Why is real Memory usage so extremely high? Why???

I really like this utility, but I've recently discovered that the combination of the menu bar and the background engine are using more 'real' memory than iTunes itself!!!

(This comparison is made when iTunes is idling).

I can not fathom why this simple utility must be such a RAM glutton. And so gluttonous even when idling! Can anyone explain it?

I've recently noticed slowdowns on my computer which appear to be swap-related, so memory-hungry apps are definitely not popular round here, especially if they offer 'mere convenience'.

No matter how convenient I find You Control Tunes, there's nothing convenient about a spinning beach ball over my Mail app. [alert admin]

Corripio 0.7.2 (Mac OS X)

Getting better but still some rough edges

0.7.2 fixes some of the more infuriating bugs (read my earlier post if you're curious about those), but for some reason it is treating compilation albums as individual songs, which means it has to search for the same cover many times. That's a really irritating design flaw which should be fixed as soon as possible.

Also I can scarcely believe that it can't find some of my 'big name' artists, or can only find a 'greatest hits' cover. (10cc anyone?) Some of the results you get back are extraordinarily 'off the mark'.

I'd like to see the results 'as they are found' rather than all in one big batch, so that if it finds a decent cover, I can assign it right away rather than waiting for corripio to finish searching.

I can't complain about the price though! All in all, a worthwhile download.

Clone Window 1.3 (Mac OS X)

Makes life in the Finder just that little bit easier

Previously I relied on a home-baked AppleScript to do this job, but it was an ugly hack that was tucked away in the Scripts Menu. I'm pleased to say that this little utility makes my script obsolete, and does exactly what it says on the tin. Very nice, and very useful. Maybe not every day, but certainly several times a week. Installation raised a few doubts in my mind: I was unsure whether I should manually install the admin utility (I did), and the installer didn't actually put the app in the Finder windows' toolbar - I had to do that myself. If they can make the installation 'do all the most likely things' automatically and offer a 'customize' button for those that want to tweak the process, it would be even better, Still, for this price, I can't complain. Excellent. [alert admin]

Colloquy 2.1 (3590) (Mac OS X)

Scripting support stagnant

This was promising about two years ago. Since then, support for AppleScript (and other scripting languages) has deteriorated and stagnated to the point where even their own plugins don't work. The developers seem more interested in supporting Apple's latest greatest platform (currently the iPhone) than getting it working properly on the Mac's that people have already bought. It's difficult to see how spending time on iPhone support is going to fix long-standing bugs on the Mac version. I'm back with Snak. When it comes to IRC on the Mac, you get what you pay for, apparently. [alert admin]

Democracy Player 0.9.5.3 (Mac OS X)

Clunky crash prone freeware which wastes my valuable time

Launched ok, then it asked if it should search for video files in my home folder (or subfolders thereof) with ONE option to hunt elsewhere. I have several HDs, with videos scattered all over. I couldn't say just "search all my Harddisks" that would be too easy. First star lost. OK I just said "don't search" and proceeded to the main window. Next thing, the progress spinner and irritating alerts that it was searching for video data in the file blahblahblah.jpg. Hello! I said DON'T search, and if you don't know where your own resources are, there's something very wrong. Another star lost. Next comes an alert that it's searching for video data in a file called "button1.gif" or some such - wtf? There goes another star. This must be a pretty stupid program if it doesn't realise that .jpg and .gif files do not contain video. OK perhaps animated GIF could be shoehorned into the 'video' definition, but if I wanna look at animated GIFs I wouldn't use Democracy player if it has to "search" for video data in them, especially when QuickTime Player can open them without any fuss. But all that is moot. What the hell was it doing 'searching' for video data in files which I know nothing about? If those files are installed by the program, I would expect the program would not have to 'search' them. Just bizarre. Next thing that happened, during this odd 'searching for video data in the file button1.gif' phase was that the app crashed. The system asked me if I wanted to reopen, which I did, with the same procedure occuring all over again. I'm running out of stars here. The only thing it scores on is price, and then again, my time is valuable, so given that I was able to view exactly ZERO videos with this thing, and just ended up wasting time, I can't even award it more than 'neutral' there either. Very poor. [alert admin]

Corripio 0.6 (Mac OS X)

CD cover art download fails...

If (for whatever reason) Corripio fails to find the correct artwork, and you click the 'skip' button, ALL subsequent CD cover art downloads will fail. i.e. Corripio may find the correct artwork, but just wont download it to the iTunes library. Once the 'skip' button has been clicked once, 'select' starts to behave exactly like 'skip'. Quitting and restarting the app restores the 'correct' behavior, but as soon as you click 'skip', the app is hosed and needs to be restarted. A big pain in the fundament. Can anyone else reproduce this? I hope this app continues to be developed. I would rather not use ITMS download cover art. [alert admin]

Sound Menu 1.3.u (Mac OS X)

Audio from backgrounded user accounts?

I am looking for something which will let me hear audio from backgrounded user accounts. Before Tiger, all audio came out, regardless of which account it came from. Now it's only the frontmost user who gets access to the audio. I realise this is a security 'fix' but here at home, where my mac is shared by me and my girlfriend, and no-one else, we'd prefer to keep all our music in one account, and not have to interrupt iTunes just because someone wants to check their mail. Any ideas? [alert admin]

Script Bundle Tool 4.0.6 (Mac OS X)

How does this differ from 'Save as Script Bundle' in Script Editor?

Title asks it all. OK the price is right, but Script Editor does all this stuff automatically if you save as a Script Bundle (or Application Bundle). Just looking for the USP here. [alert admin]

RapidWeaver 3.5.0 (Mac OS X)

Excellent tool, going places

Just a few quick comments about RW. I have just made a little site with it and I am very impressed.

Clearly RW is not for everyone, but it hits a sweet spot that no other tool can match. Dreamweaver and GoLive are overkill for most people, wasting everybody's time and money. The simpler tools tend to be simple as in 'stupid'.

RW is a smart, elegant program. It doesn't let you do stupid things, and produces excellent results.

I have a few gripes / wishes though. Here they come:

GUI gets a bit sluggish when you have more than a half-dozen pages.

When I click the 'preview' tab, I briefly see the most recently rendered page before the newest one gets rendered. A progress bar would be more suitable and meaningful here.

I'd like to be able to use the page inspector on multiple pages at once.

The page inspector doesn't want to let me put pages on the root of the site. It lets me make the 'folder' field blank, but when I switch away and back again, it insists on creating a new folder for the page, which is misleading. The workaround is to explicitly choose a folder name and use that consistently.

'Duplicate page' doesn't inherit the color style subsettings of the duplicated page, even if you have set those color style subsettings to be inherited by new pages.

I'd love to see Applescript support. Imagine something like this...

tell application "RapidWeaver"
  tell document 1
repeat with p in (every page whose title contains "blah")
      tell p
if (name of theme) contains "Autumn" then
set don't show in menu to true
        end if
      end tell
    end repeat
  end tell
end tell

Having just asked about AppleScript support... Would it be possible to make a Windows version? You'd make a fortune. OTOH this app is a good reason to buy a Mac! (If Apple were smart, they'd buy it and integrate it in the system somehow).

Audio from backgrounded user accounts?

Yes I know that, but as I mentioned before, we'd rather not interrupt the music currently playing just because someone wants to check their mail. Right now the best we can do is: 1 Note what song/playlist is playing 2 Quit iTunes 3 Switch user account 4 Launch iTunes 5 Find the appropriate playlist and click 'play' 6 Check mail 7 Repeat steps 1-5 This is NOT a good usability solution, in my opinion. Even more infurtiating that it used to work just how…

Get your facts straight

1) The Khmer Rouge came to power in Cambodia because the US dropped more bombs on Cambodia (a defenseless peasant society) than were dropped by the allies collectively in the whole of WW2. 2) There was no bloodbath after the US pulled out of Vietnam. Where's your evidence for that? The death tolls during, and immediately after the war bear no comparison.

Help please! Why doesn't it work?

Answering my own question here: Having messed with this a bit, it's now clear that after /opt/local/bin has to be added to $PATH. I had done this but apparently it requires a logout before it works (and I have far too many important apps running to just log out willy nilly)
Well, I just typed
export PATH=$PATH:/opt/local/bin
at the terminal, and lo! 'port' is suddenly understood. Good luck all!

A Trustworthy Standby

Xiaopangzi wrote "This application doesn’t seem to be as popular or attract as much attention as it used to a few years ago. Can anyone suggest a reason why any other text editor would be preferable over this one?"

I'll venture to guess: In the old days (before OS X) there was only SimpleText for styled text editing, which was neither scriptable, nor particularly sophisticated. There was a plugin/hack called 'SimpleText Color Menu' which boosted some…
