Symantec Norton AntiVirus 10.1.2 (Mac OS X)
Uninstaller deletes /Library/StartupItems then presents erroneous yet entertaining information.
Upon running the uninstaller for this product I was treated to a small window showing text which appears to be the uninstall log. Glancing over the information I noticed the following... Beginning uninstall of "Norton AntiVirus.pkg". Ran pre-uninstall script. Deleting package files (194 files). Deleted file //Applications/Symantec Solutions/Read Me Files/Norton AntiVirus Read Me.rtf. [...] Deleted folder //Applications/Symantec Solutions/Norton AntiVirus.app. File //Applications/Symantec Solutions was skipped because it couldn't be found. File //Applications was skipped because it couldn't be found. Deleted receipt /Library/Receipts/Norton AntiVirus.pkg Beginning uninstall of "Norton AutoProtect.pkg". Ran pre-uninstall script. Deleting package files (202 files). [...] File //System/Library/Extensions was skipped because it couldn't be found. File //System/Library was skipped because it couldn't be found. File //System was skipped because it couldn't be found. [...] Deleted file //Library/StartupItems/NortonAutoProtect. Deleted folder //Library/StartupItems. [...] File //Library/PreferencePanes was skipped because it couldn't be found. [...] File //Library/Application Support was skipped because it couldn't be found. File //Library was skipped because it couldn't be found. [...] File //System/Library/Extensions was skipped because it couldn't be found. File //System/Library was skipped because it couldn't be found. File //System was skipped because it couldn't be found. [...] Deleted file //Library/StartupItems/NortonAutoProtect. File /Library/StartupItems could not be deleted now, moved to Trash. Deleted file //Library/StartupItems. [...] File //Library/PreferencePanes was skipped because it couldn't be found. [...] File //Library/Application Support was skipped because it couldn't be found. File //Library was skipped because it couldn't be found. Deleted receipt /Library/Receipts/Norton AutoProtect.pkg [...] Beginning uninstall of "SymEvent.pkg". Deleting package files (12 files). [...] Deleted folder //System/Library/Extensions/SymEvent.kext. File //System/Library/Extensions was skipped because it couldn't be found. File //System/Library was skipped because it couldn't be found. File //System was skipped because it couldn't be found. Deleted receipt /Library/Receipts/SymEvent.pkg Beginning uninstall of "LiveUpdate.pkg". Ran pre-uninstall script. Deleting package files (175 files). Deleted file //private/etc/Symantec.conf. File //private/etc was skipped because it couldn't be found. File //private was skipped because it couldn't be found. [...] Deleted file //Library/Application Support/Norton Solutions Support/LiveUpdate. File //Library/Application Support/Norton Solutions Support was skipped because it couldn't be found. File //Library/Application Support was skipped because it couldn't be found. File //Library was skipped because it couldn't be found. Deleted file //Applications/Symantec Solutions/Read Me Files/LiveUpdate Read Me.rtf. [...] File //Applications was skipped because it couldn't be found. Deleted receipt /Library/Receipts/LiveUpdate.pkg ... and it continued in much the same vein. While I am not at all happy about the incompetence of the Symantec developer who just deleted my /Library/StartupItems folder (yes, it *really* did delete it), I must say that I am rather ecstatic that the developer was too incompetent to actually find the other folders (or perhaps merely doesn't know the difference between a file and a folder?) which were apparently selected for deletion as well such as /System, /Library, /etc and /Applications. Consider Symantec's uninstaller to be MALWARE. Backup your /Library/StartupItems folder before uninstalling Symantec products or better yet, don't install them in the first place! [alert admin]

iView MediaPro 1.0.8076.0 (Mac OS X)
Microsoft Expression Media (Mac)
The version information on this page is not current. 1.0.8076.0 is shown here while Microsoft's downloads page shows 1.0.9038.0 which they also refer to as "Version 1.0, Service Pack 1" and also as "1.0.2 (9038)" from within the program itself. [alert admin]

VLC media player 0.8.6c (Mac OS X)
Stores cache files in ~/Library/Preferences ...
If you backup your Preferences folder (as I do) you might notice that you are backing up VLC's cache files which are essentially trash and I can't imagine why anyone would have any need or desire to back them up, ever. It would certainly be nice if VLC stored its cache files in ~/Library/Caches which is the standard location for user cache files in OS X and has been for years. Incidentally, the *actual* list of VLC's supported container file formats, video and audio formats is located at: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/features.html [alert admin]

iCab X 3.0.3 (Mac OS X)
Stores temporary cache files in Preferences folder.
iCab stores its browser disk cache files in ~/Library/Preferences rather than in ~/Library/Caches. I backup my preferences folder, not my Caches folder. Software that stores temporary cache files within my Preferences or Documents folders causes my backups to take longer and be larger in file size. Is there any justifiable reason for not using the standard Caches directory??? [alert admin]

Now Up-to-Date & Contact 5.3.1 (Mac OS X)
THERE IS NO WAY TO EXPORT ALL DATA !!!!!
Now Contact allows the creation of notes for an individual contact. When exporting data, only two formats other than Now's proprietary file format are supported - text and vCard. Although the field "Notes" is selectable for export to text files, only notes of type "Note" get exported (not events which are type "Appointment".) In addition, while the content of the note is exported, the metadata related to the note such as the note's date, time and duration are not exported at all. Essentially, once you begin keeping notes in Now Contact, you're stuck in Now Contact or you lose data on export to switch to another program. Think twice before getting involved with Now Contact! MPlayer 2.0b8r5 (Mac OS X)
Intel Mac users: MPlayer for Mac OS X Tiger (Intel)
http://mac.punknews.org/mplayer http://mac.punknews.org/downloads/mplayerosx86-1.0pre8-CVS20060314.dmg "A hacked up port of the popular media player for Mac OS X running on Intel boxes. The application is packaged in an application bundle and can be executed from the Finder. You can run it full-screen or windowed. Documentation is included. A build of the mplayer GUI, also Intel is included, as are command-line builds of mplayer and mencoder. Requirements: Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.x running on Intel Status: All available processor-specific optimizations are available Win32 codecs are not supported yet. Assembler code needs to be ported to the Apple assembler first. I've got it to compile, but it does not link due to missing symbols. Files do not always work when embedded in the GUI (the Mplayer OSX output) - this is a problem with the GUI, not mplayer itself." [alert admin]

Selectively works but better than nothing
Hello Stevacon_dotmac, After reading your comment, I went to msnbc.com to take a look at one of their videos. I found this page which has the video I used as a sample: http://video.msn.com/v/us/fv/msnbc/fv.htm??f=00&g=28200f43-79a3-46a8-8cb9-fbeec58dc681&p=hotvideo_m_edpicks&t=m5&rf=http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19031423/&fg= The video played fine on my system so I downloaded it to see exactly what format is used... The download url was: http://msnbc.vo.llnwd.net/e1/video/flash/n_pwms_jefferson_070604.flv Note that it is a Flash video file. QuickTime can play Flash video files only if they were generated in Flash version 5 or prior -…

Newer than the release date of this one too
I can't tell what version it is either. It says it was created 2005-12-08 but the release date for this component is 2004-04-04 according to this VersionTracker page... This one does not have a version resource, the other one (0.4b1) does. ???
