Apple Mac OS X 10.5.5 (Mac OS X)
Update Works Fine ... Permissions Question
The Mac OS X 10.5.5 update is working fine on my Intel 3.06 GHz 24" iMac. I've noticed no problems so far. I did run into an unusual item when I repaired permissions, though. I got the following 2 alerts (which I have never seem before, and which didn't show up when I repaired permissions just before the update): Warning: SUID file "usr/bin/lppasswd" has been modified and will not be repaired. Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/OwnerGroupTool" has been modified and will not be repaired. Does anyone know what this is all about? Thanks in advance. McAfee VirusScan 8.6 (Mac OS X)
VirusScan-Mac now available for Single Users
VirusScan (the software formerly known as Virex) is now apparently available for single users (licensees) for $36.55. Previously, the minimum order was either 3 or 5 "Licensees". See here: http://www.shopmcafee.com/dr/sat5/ec_Main.Entry17C?SID=43625&SP=10023&CID=0&PID=630722&PN=1&V1=630722&CUR=840&DSP=&PGRP=0&ABCODE=&CACHE_ID=245536 The latest build (version 8.6, 11-01-07) supposedly works with Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger" and 10.5 "Leopard". See MACNN article: http://www.macnn.com/articles/07/11/29/virusscan.filedefense/ I've been monitoring this McAfee situation (for several years) waiting for a stable, single-user update. I'm still using Virex 7.2 (v1.1) [AKA Virex 7.2.1] on a system running 10.4 Tiger. I use "Get DAT Updates" to keep things up-to-date. I'm not sure whether to update now, or just forget about this program when I upgrade to Leopard. Has anyone tried this latest update yet? [alert admin]

Garmin WebUpdater 2.0.0.4 Beta (Mac OS X)
Works Fine w/Garmin StreetPilot C530 ![]()

I just updated my Garmin StreetPilot C530 from v 3.30 to 5.7. The Garmin <beta> Web Updater worked flawlessly. You must be a bit patient ... it took about 20-30 seconds for the StreetPilot icon to show up on my mac's desktop via the USB connection. Once that happened, the Garmin Web Updater located my GPS unit easily and updated the software quickly. It even gave me the option to update other software on my unit, if desired. The License Agreement text even appeared (after a very short delay), for those interested in reading it before updating. ;-) BTW: I am using Mac OS X 10.4.9 (PPC). [alert admin]

Virex 7 DAT 070131 (Mac OS X)
FYI: McAfee updated the virus scanning engine from 4400 to 5100 in DAT V7061115 (and newer). It seems to work fine for me. I thought I'd give them a little pat on the back, since we mostly just rag on them here for their poor Mac consumer support. [alert admin]

Intuit Quicken 2007 16.0 (Mac OS X)
Intuit ... What did you do all year?
First, Quicken is an excellent basic financial tool (I'd hate to be without it). However, after reading Intuit's press release for Quicken 2007, I have to wonder what they have been doing all year ... especially the Mac programmer(s). Quicken 2007 for Windows lists over 123 new features, based on extensive customer-focused surveys: http://quicken.intuit.com/commerce/catalog/fragments/quicken/products/improvements_2007.jhtml Quicken 2007 for Mac boasts a grand total of four [count 'em, 4] new features: http://quicken.intuit.com/mac.jhtml?view=new&lid=prod_tab (1) New! Easily download and track your 401(k) portfolio Um, couldn't we do that before (except maybe the "easily" part)? The biggest problem I've seen is that many financial firms refuse to support Mac downloads. Banks, etc. have told me that Intuit wants to charge them separately for Mac support, and they refuse to pay. (2) New! More detailed paycheck tracking Wow! (3) New! QuickEntry Widget How long does it take to write a widget. An hour? A day? Note to Intuit: most widgets are given away free. After all, the technology is now built into Mac OS X. (4) New! Know precisely what your balances and holdings are I hate to pick on Intuit, but does this imply that previous versions of Quicken only allowed "imprecise" balances & holdings? So, in summary, each of these "New!" features is priced at the bargain-basement price of $15 ($59.99 upgrade price), and took an average of three months to produce. And all this at the same price as the Windows version! Also, I wonder if Intuit spent much time in fixing the bugs still evident in Quicken 2006? After all, Quicken is one of the few programs that still crashes on my machine (besides MicroSoft products, that is) [and luckily, the autosave feature works]. Also, did Intuit make any attempt at all to improve the Home Inventory program that has been limping along since 2004 or 2005? Actually, we Mac users are pretty lucky, I guess. Just imagine how bad things could get if Steve's buddy Bill Campbell (Chairman of intuit) wasn't on Apple's board of Directors. IMHO [alert admin]

Intuit Quicken 2006 15.0.2 (Mac OS X)
New Version Available (2006 R4)
Launch Quicken 2006 for information, or go here: http://quicken.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/quicken.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=3798 Lots of (hopefully helpful) changes. Wow: Feature Notes For Quicken 2006 For Mac, R4 This update offers many improvements, including: When entering transactions in the register, Quicken sometimes performed slowly on systems running Mac OS X 10.2 and 10.3. This issue has been resolved. Stability improvements were made to prevent Quicken from quitting unexpectedly when editing a payee name (while the split is displayed) after editing the category and amount for a split line. Stability improvements were made to prevent Quicken from quitting unexpectedly when launching or during data file conversion on systems running Mac OS X 10.4 or later. Stability improvements were made to prevent Quicken from quitting unexpectedly when launching with certain internal files corrupted. The files in question are now repaired if necessary and Quicken launches as expected. When canceling a Quicken Bill Pay payment, the payment would be incorrectly marked as a sent payment in the register. Quicken now correctly marks the cancelled payment. When using Quicken Bill Pay, rules concerning postdated payments were sometimes evaluated incorrectly. This issue has been resolved. When downloading transactions the Accept All button would become inactive after using the Accept button. This issue has been resolved. After enabling an online account the Download Transactions window did not refresh properly. This issue has been resolved. Quicken sometimes quit unexpectedly when creating a Smart Payee after deleting an online-enabled account. This issue has been resolved. When selecting a downloaded transaction in the Download Transactions window, Quicken sometimes failed to copy the transaction to the register section of the window. This issue has been resolved. In some cases investment transactions would reappear in the Download Transactions window after being accepted or deleted. This issue has been resolved. In some cases the split ratio for downloaded stock split transactions could be reversed (i.e. 1 for 2 instead of 2 for 1). This issue has been resolved. Quicken incorrectly displayed split transaction information for investment “Buy” and “Move Shares In” transactions under certain circumstances. This issue has been resolved. Quicken now prevents disabling online functionality for an investment account if there are unprocessed transactions in the Download Transactions window. When using the Scheduled Updates tab of the One Step Update window, clicking the weekday buttons rendered the buttons unreadable. This issue has been resolved. When running a scheduled update, Quicken sometimes created and copied a backup file to .Mac when the Back Up to .Mac feature was enabled. This has been corrected so the backup is no longer created in this situation. When using the Move Transactions window, some buttons overlapped register fields. This issue has been resolved. You can now paste into the Number field of checking registers. The File > Open Recent menu item did not display a submenu when there were no recent files to display. This issue has been resolved. The Help menu now includes a link to the Quicken for Mac user forums. Stability improvements were made to prevent Quicken from quitting unexpectedly when deleting a transaction from the Calendar. The Add Note feature of the Calendar did not work properly for some customers. This issue has been resolved. When entering transactions from the Calendar, some buttons overlapped register fields. This issue has been resolved. You can now delete multiple transactions at the same time from within the Calendar. The Export Report to Excel functionality has been improved for better compatibility with Microsoft Excel. When exporting a QIF file, the custom export options for Securities and Security Prices were reversed. This issue has been resolved. Stability improvements were made to prevent Quicken from quitting unexpectedly when saving a copy of the data file. This issue has been resolved. The “Margin Interest” investment transaction type did not work properly for some customers. This issue has been resolved. When displaying security detail graphs, a notation has been added to indicate when a stock split occurred. Tax rates used in the Tax Planner have been updated. Quicken has been updated to check with a new server for information about the availability of software updates. [alert admin]

VirusScan-Mac now available for Single Users
A bit of clarification: (1) The McAfee web site says that VirusScan 8.6 is for use with Intel processors only: "System Requirements for McAfee VirusScan for MacTel 8.0 = Apple Mac OS X v10.4 (Tiger) or later 133 MHZ Intel-based processor (or greater) 32 MB RAM." This appears to contradict VersionTracker, which says that VirusScan 8.6 works with PPC & Intel. FYI: Apparently, McAfee has again renamed this product from "VirusScan" to "VirusScan for MacTel". (2) In my previous…

The download sites seem to be working now (both VersionTracker & the Quicken program's internal updater). It appears that Intuit was just a bit slow in posting the updater; just like they've been "a little slow" in providing feature parity for the Mac version with the 3 Windows versions.

Wait a minute ... while Quicken 2006 reboots
Hi Doctor J Yes, I agree with you: Intuit did say that in the "Features & Benefits" tab for Quicken Mac 2007 on their web site ["Quicken® Mac 2007 now delivers all the most important features and benefits of Quicken Deluxe 2007 for Windows ,,,"]. However, if you click on the tab right next to that one, labeled "What's new for 2007", you will see the four (and only four) "New!" features highlighted in red by Intuit…

First, thanks for a great program. Deleting the "com.titanium.OnyX.plist" file fixes the "Invisible Window" issue noted in earlier comments. The only (very minor) issue I see now is that the preference to change from "Brushed Metal" to "Aqua" doesn't seem to work.

There is also a "buy now" link on the McAfee web site. It indicates pricing of $40.21 each with package pricing for a minimum of 5 licenses. Could the Digital River link mentioned earlier (currently not working) be for a single user purchase?

Hi, I tried it again with the same result. A couple more unusual clues ... on the "Select a destination" screen, it says: "installing this software requires 0 bytes of space". The next screen has "Easy Install" grayed out (in addition to the things I mentioned earlier. (1) This isn't "Tiger" only, right? (2) Is there a "prefs" file or something similar I could try deleting? Thanks for your assistance. Bob
