MM3-WebAssistant 2008 (Mac OS X)

Three years later...

Installation is somewhat easier, but there's confusion -- at least on my machine -- among the various proxy configurations. This would be a whole lot easier application for Mac users if the developer would get serious and employ someone fully vested in Macs to write the instructions, rather than assuming that there are easy analogies for every Windows operation. There aren't. It may be working, it may not. It doesn't capture Flash so far as I can tell, and that means that 50% of contemporary websites come off as text-only. [alert admin]

Camino 1.6.4 (Mac OS X)

Fun to use

I like Camino because it's sleek, easy and fun to use, very capable, and undergoing continuous development. I like that the software is developer-created and user-based. It's simple enough that I know how the machinery works. That's a big plus for me. [alert admin]

KeystrokeRecorder 3.3.5 (Mac OS X)

One more thing: KSR is always on, in background

(Sorry for the earlier redundancy, VT sent me a spurious error message that my first posting hadn't posted.) Apparently, KSR is always on in background. Turning KSR Edit -- which creates log files -- does not turn off KSR. In my case at least, this means (until I get a registration number) that the damn thing beeps or bops or whatever every 25th typed character...which is very annoying. I suppose I can turn it off by disabling Universal Access, but what a workaround that is for a fairly simple task: just quitting KSR. I'll report back once I get my registration number. My suggestion: don't install this software until you have the reg number in hand and can disable the 25-typed character limitation on storage (and hence the annoying sound). [alert admin]

KeystrokeRecorder 3.3.5 (Mac OS X)

(1) Registration issue; (2) Icon in dock issue

I just downloaded, installed, and paid for a deluxe version of Keystroke Recorder. 1. After paying the required $29 via PayPal, I'm at a loss how to register my software. There are no instructions and I've received no registration-number code. 2. The KSR icon definitely is visible in my dock and clicking on it produces the KSR App Editor, which then reveals the monitoring for whomever is inputting data. I'm using Camino browser on my G4 Powerbook Al running Leopard, OS 10.5.2. This needs some fixing. -- Bob [alert admin]

KeystrokeRecorder 3.3.5 (Mac OS X)

The icon remains visible in the dock, plus....

At least on my G4 Powerbook Al, running Leopard (15.2.1), the KSR icon is clearly visible in my dock. If I try to remove it, it resists. If I click on it, the KSR App Editor is revealed, giving away the keystroke monitoring. This is awkward, to say the least. Also, I downloaded the software and installed it, then used PayPal to buy the $29 shareware. But there are no instructions regarding how to obtain and install the registration number I need to use KSR for more than a token demo of 25 characters or less. Thank you. Bob Jacobson [alert admin]

Camino 1.0.1 (Mac OS X)

Definitely the best browser for the Mac.

Invoking the Hidden Preferences gives even more control over the browser's performance, which so far has been flawless for me. Excellent support for Camino by the all-volunteer team, too. I miss integration with and support for FlashGot, but perhaps that's on the agenda. [alert admin]

Speed Download 4.0 (Mac OS X)

Additional cost of upgrade

I think SD's great, too. Been using it since SD1. But the basic idea behind shareware -- which is how this started out, I believe -- is that you invest in crappy early versions so that the developer can improve the product and attract lots more later customers at higher prices. For your investment, you get future free upgrades. What Yazsoft should have done was indicate to users of SD3 that SD4 is not a free upgrade and that if you don't want to pay, keep SD3. Instead, they presented this just as if it was a regular update (or whatever), as before. So I like others downloaded, installed, and trashed SD3. Then we discovered that our keys don't work. Maybe it was an oversight, but it leaves a bad taste in the mouth nonetheless. I'll think over buying SD4. [alert admin]

Data Rescue II 1.1 (Mac OS X)

Seriously great product!

Data Rescue has saved my butt more than once when I did crazy things to my directories, "losing" files and databases. DR pulled out the lost files and made it easy for me to proceed. You'll need two Macs to use Data Rescue, Firewire'd together. And time: it can take hours to run a total comprehensive disk scan. But when the alternative is lost data, there's no contest. I think DR is one of the best software products ever. [alert admin]

Bridge Construction Set 1.30 (Mac OS X)

Brilliant educational, interactive "game."

This game teaches you what it takes to build a functioning bridge of greater or lesser complexity. Every feature is pertinent and it keeps getting better. [alert admin]

Here's a link to the DivX 1.0 player for Mac (and another for Windows), which is still for free, I take it: http://labs.divx.com/node/111 [alert admin]

Not as good as it used to be

On my MacBook, as before with G3s and G4s, Safari has been plagued by terrible memory leaks. It seems uninspired. FireFox is impressive, but it's huge. When I start it up, I feel like I'm throttling up an Abrams tank when what I need is a Prius. Camino still feels playful and the support from the development team is just magnificent. But each to his or her own.

The eternal preview of nothing spectular

Safari creates a massive memory leak for me everytime I install it, regardless of version. I'm running OS 10.4.6 on a G4 Powerbook (about to be upgraded -- maybe Safari will finally work for me).

Unable to download OnyX update or to visit Titanium website

Something must be wrong with the Titanium download server. It's seized up at 80.19% completed transmission (using SpeedDownload 3) three times now. Can someone inform Titanium? (I can't call up the website.)

Don't Be So Quick To Criticize One Star Rating

I agree regarding the inability to import Entourage and Apple Mail addresses, mail, and Rules. Who the hell needs imports from Eudora and Netscape? Gimme a break. These guys want to be taken seriously, then let's get serious about migration from the two largest audiences of potential users: Entourage and Apple Mail users!

Installed and works fine.

However, I prefer to use Apple's Preview. It's faster and easier to work with, for my purposes.
