Ovolab Geophoto 2.0 (Mac OS X)

New version, new problems

I have just tried version 2, excited to see any changes. There is indeed a better integration with Google Maps (even though the workflow is still not perfect: place the pics loosely on the main screen and refine the position with a side window). However, the application ended up scraping my GeoPhoto v1 library and when I tried to start a new file, it crashed, and crashed, and crashed again while importing albums from iPhoto until my new GeoPhoto library got scraped. Still need some work... And by the way, the application can be very slow sometimes (but maybe that's because I had too many pictures in it (2000+ with version 1)), especially at startup. Remote Buddy 1.8 (Mac OS X)

Really good (with Keyspan Express Remote)

I am using my old Mac Mini PPC as a multimedia station and this software + a remote is really a great complement to my little TV setup. Remote buddy provides a replacement to a mouse, controls Transmission and VLC and many other programs (awaken, itunes, etc.). The menus are slick and they offer direct access to your files (and yet, it offers the choice of the software you will use to open them). Behaviours can be freely configured and that's probably better since the default one for VLC is not really adapted to the Keyspan Express Remote (meaning that the play/pause/forward buttons are not used by default, etc.). Wallet 2.7 (Mac OS X)

Pretty good

Pretty good. I moved from SplashID! to wallet thanks to MacHeist. SplashID!'s interface was getting old but that of Wallet is pretty slick. The use is very intuitive and (so far) I didn't have to face the "password" issue mentioned in the other posts. There is just a tiny problem when importing data, if the imported values have more fields than the current database allows the extra values are floating around and you need to fiddle with "edit", "lock", and add and remove fields until you succeed to move the extra bits around. Vienna 2.2.1.2210 (Mac OS X)

Great product

Great product, great price-value! Easy to use, regularly updated, localized, free. What else could we ask for? You can select multiple styles, make your own smart folders, etc. The only regret is that it would be nice to be able to select different views for each folder/feed. [alert admin]

DEVONnote 1.9.12 (Mac OS X)

Slooow

Handling a single rtf file of 740ko (a copy paste of an HTML table containing primarily links) makes DevonNote extremely slow (cannot do anything for a good 10 seconds)... Good idea otherwise. [alert admin]

Hana 1.0.4 (Mac OS X)

Not working

The quick links on the first page to add a web-app do NOT work. Gmail does not work except when clicking in outgoing links (mobile.google.com, etc.): no way to read my emails. No interest for me at the moment... [alert admin]

Ovolab Geophoto 1.3 (Mac OS X)

Good idea - Needs improvements

I discovered the software through macZOT! I tried it and I was seduced by the idea so I bought it (for $9 thanks to macZOT!). A quick purchase that I partly regret now. You can place on a globe your pictures (imported from iPhoto albums or off the disk) and Flickr pics albums to present them in an original fashion. Placing and manipulation is intuitive and you achieve quick results. The Google Maps integration fails quite often (the so called Loupe often freezes or just doesn't display the Google Maps overlay properly). The quality of maps used for the globe is also far from that of Google Earth but the use of Google Maps diminishes the importance of that problem. YTou can also find locations using an online database, quite complete (with hotels, points of interest, cities, regions and so on). The loading of the app is quite slow but with 1000s of pics to reload from iPhoto albums I deem it's normal. A few details needs to be taken into revision: loading of the most recently edited album rather than a blank one, direct edition of the localization of pictures are of those. I emailed the team about it a few days ago, I will see if I get any reply. In the end, give the soft a try, it's amusing and will change you of the plain iPhoto interface to show pictures of your holidays and trips. Maybe you won't even resent the same flaws as I did. In any case I will keep using that soft for a while and hope for future improvements. [alert admin]
