Data Rescue II 1.2.1 (Mac OS X)

Saved by Data Rescue

Some 40 photographs out of 160 I took with my Canon G9 got corrupted on a 2GB Sandisk during an attempt to transfer them to my computer. These were irreplaceable pictures taken during a rare lighting condition in the SoCal desert. Both myself and others who were on the pictures were inconsolable. Data Rescue II has recovered every single one of them! Thank you for your great product! Thank you, thank you, thank you! [alert admin]

BumperCar 2.0.3 (Mac OS X)

Sneaky company "forgets" to tell you in advance that serial will expire every 1-2 months

I purchased BumperCar, a kid-safe browser for my 11 y/o daughter, for $30. It is decent as a browser and only minimally buggy in its settings (manually inputting forbidden URLs does not work from the settings window, only from the main browser window by using a button or menu item). But the biggest problem is the following. When I received my confirmation email with my password, I found the following line in it: "The above code is good for 1-2 months following your purchase, then it expires. Should you need to re-register your game after the code expires, simply retrieve a new one using our Code Retrieval System at https://store.freeverse.com/code/" I sent them the following: "This is totally unacceptable. You should have warned me about this in advance. It is not a practice that I was supposed to anticipate. I have purchased many software products but I have never encountered this [...]. Besides, since when is BumperCar a GAME??? I purchased your product as a web browser for my daughter, not as a game for myself. She uses it for school stuff. What is she supposed to do if the code expires and I happen to be away which I do often? I want my money back. " They have not even had the decency to respond. [alert admin]

Mozilla Thunderbird 1.0 (Mac OS X)

few weird problems

Having been frustrated by Apple Mail I decided to try TBird. I especially liked that I can save attachments wherever I want, I am absolutely infuriated with Mail's insistence on storing messages in one opaque lump. So on that TBird if quite nice. The prefs are sensible and mature, again much more adult-like than Mail's. E.g. you don't have to go thru prefs to get to filters. Which are called filters and not "rules". But I was suprised to see that TBird managed to underdo Mail on the filters themselves. Very few choices, all seem to be displayed whether you're gonna use them or not. The filters work only from the filter window, not from the menu. The conditions window does not prefill from the currently selected email (unlike Mail) which could be manageable except that the window DOES NOT ACCEPT PASTE! You must manually type in stuff. Moreover the windo is not movable when you are working on your filters so if it happens to cover the text you have to close the rule-setting slide-out first then move the filters window then reopen the rule-setting slide-out so you can see teh text you are trying to type in. I can't recommend TBird as long as the filtering is so bad. I'll check back on it with version 1.1. [alert admin]

FileMaker Pro 7.0 (Mac OS X)

Finally a major release that IS a major release

I started yearning for explicit definablity of sort/find/pageSetup, text formatting functions, go to rep field by other than a preset number, and a host of similar things 8 years ago. 8 years!!! I was not the only one. But finally they are all here. The columns of the Define Fields window still do not remember their resized width but I'm getting picky here. Yay, Filemaker!!! [alert admin]

Okay, I gave in, Notepad it is.

After testing 6-7 of the other notepad utilities i decided to stick with this one because it is most like the pre-OSX Apple util. I had to create text clippings from each page in the note pad file on the OS9 box then copy them to my OSX laptop and drag them one by one all onto the OSX NotePad. I would bet my little finger that the author could write an applescript to…
