Data Backup 2.1 (Mac OS X)

I bought this and stopped using it after 2 weeks

The program had several serious flaws: - if compression is enabled, Data Backup restores the files in compressed form - if the backup disk is full, Data Backup stops backing up without any warning - if you schedule a daily backup, you don't get a daily backup but a daily attempt to back up at a fixed time; if the computer is off at that time there is no backup and no warning -sometimes Data Backup hangs after launching and you have to reinstall the whole thing (after which it has forgotten all your saved sets, scheduled backups and log files!) This apart from many inelegances: - it is slow - no option to shut down the computer after a backup - saved sets cannot be edited - no predefined set that excludes caches and other things you don't need to backup - the exclusion procedure is tiresome and does not support drag and drop - the part of the screen that shows the exclusions is too small to see which files are excluded and which not - you cannot adjust the size of the main screen - the predefined set that says 'all files for Pipo de Clown' does not backup all files owned by 'Pipo de Clown' (as I would expect), but instead all files in the home folder of Pipo de Clown. NewsFire 1.3 (v58) (Mac OS X)

Not worth trying.

The author seems to be convinced that when you seriously try the software you will not find it worth buying. So he tries to persuade you to buy it before trying by nagging you before you ever had a look at the software. Even worse, every ten minutes or so the unregistered application vigorously bounces its docs item and repeats the nag screen: "Software worth using is software worth purchasing!". Sure but this kind of nagware is not worth trying. [alert admin]

NoteTaker 2003 1.8.9 (Mac OS X)

Not as good as I should like

NoteTaker is a very useful program. I use it every day and it works reasonably well. I use it to keep and organize all different kinds of information. I have one notebook voor computer notes and other books for the projects on which I work. The features that I like most are the notebook metaphor, the drawer, outlining, flexibility and customizability, internal hyper links, and the clipping service. Having said this, I should add that NoteTaker is not as good for my purposes as I should like. The indexing features are way below what is expected of this kind of program and the outlining features are of mixed quality. NoteTaker has a nice X-ray feature which shows you the context of the indexed words. However, the use of this feature is severely impeded by the fact that if a word appears more than one time on a page, or if it appears on two or more adjacent pages it is listed only once. The program doesn't allow you to add multiple keywords to an item and doesn't let you highlight words and index them. The outlining features are better than those of Omni Outliner but not as good as those of More. NoteTaker supports many basic outlining functions as well as the advanced 'hoist' function. It does not clone though, which is an ommision in this kind of software. There are separate functions to add a sibling or a child; a great improvement in comparison to Omni and More in which the one function 'new item' confusingly adds a sibling or child depending on the context! Another nice feature is the 'paste as outline' option which makes different entries for the different lines in the clipboard. The implementation of some of the basic outlining functions is confusing. The most basic action (add a sibling entry) is done with the enter key. This is not documented and this option is not in the menu. The keyboard command 'add a child' (ctrl-return) is documented, but it is also not in the menu. There are functions called 'new entry' (cmd-return) and 'new entry above' (cmd-enter) but these functions split the entry rather than add new ones (these splitting functions are very useful, by the way). There is little or no logic in the keyboard shortcuts for these functions. There is no satisfactory keyboard shortcuts to increase (indent) the nesting level of an entry. The preferences give you the option to use the tab key to indent the entry, but this only works if the ruler is disabled. The following basic functions are lacking: - split an entry such that its tail becomes a child - combine entries - add a sibling above (without splitting) - add an aunt under (without splitting) Another serious problem is the inability to move a group of selected entries. In addition, NoteTaker lacks More's promote and demote options which respectively make all lower siblings children and make all children lower siblings. [alert admin]

Business Card Creator for Word 3.2 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

Not useful

The packet consists of three Word templates (one for US business cards, one for European business cards and one for glossy business cards), a sample document with business cards and a word file with instructions. The templates give you a toolbar with the features you most often use when designing business cards and a 2x5 table (each cell is one card). If the lay-out of the paper on which you print the cards is different from that of the template (which is usually the case), you have to adjust the table and there is no explanation of how this is to be done. I would think that it is much easier to use the inbuilt mailing label wizard (file -> project gallery -> labels) to create a lay-out that fits your paper. The features in the toolbar are build-in Word features. The instructions refer to Word's help for an explanation of how to use them. The sample documents shows the developers incompetence both as a word user and as a designer. In effect, this packet offers you nothing but a toolbar with already existing features without any explanation of to use them for $15. Not recommended. [alert admin]

Media Catalog 1.2.1 (Mac OS X)

Not worth the money

This simple utility offers just what it promises: you can catalogue removable volumes (if desired by drag and drop) and search for the files on those volumes by phrases in the filename, filepath and/or media title. It always searches for the exact phrase you entered. You cannot browse through the catalogue, you cannot get a list of the catalogued volumes, you cannot search for more than one phrase or select certain file types, no wild cards and so on. The user interface is clean and simple. Searching and cataloging are both very slow. This could be a useful and cheap alternative to $20-$30 programs such as Haxial Diskcatalog, CDFinder or Disktracker for those (like me) who only want to catalog occasional backups of their update and downloads folder, except that $15 is much too much for what it offers. I would recommend it if it were free, [alert admin]

TAO 1.0b5 (Mac OS X)

This is really great!

Two days after I posted my complaints about the user interface the author of TAO posted a version that solves the main problems: confusing status indicators and the need to click on an item twice in order to open or close it. Now, I'll be happy to buy TAO! [alert admin]

FO 0.9z (Mac OS X)

Better than More, but with confusing user interface

When it comes to features this is the first outliner I know of that beats good old More. Outiners can be used for several purposes: organizing files, document planning, project planning, note taking, checklists and so on. I currently use the Finder for organizing my files, NoteTaker for note keeping, OmniOutliner for document production and Brainforest for checklists and notes that I want to synchronize with my Palm. FO seems especially fit for document production (writing). For this purpose one doesn't need columns (a feature that is as far as I know unique to OmniOutliner), but one may profit from many of the features that FO has (and OmniOutliner not) such as the ability to split the editor window, the excellent item splitting features, the 'show Nth level' feature, and the ability to view the modification date of an item (!). The basic outlining and reorganization features are comparable to those of More (and, hence better than those of Omni). For instance, FO has, but Omni lacks, commands and keyboard shortcuts to add a child to an item that has no children, to add a sibling to an item that has children, and to add an aunt to an item. Other nice features are cloning and the configurability of the keyboard short cuts. Nevertheless, I hesitate to replace OmniOutliner and buy TAO. The reason is in the non-standard user interface. Mac outliners (e.g. the Finder, KeyNote, OmniOutliner, NoteTaker) typically use a (red) triangle pointing to the right to indicate closed items that have children, a (red) triangle pointing downwards to indicate open items that have children and a (red) bullet to indicate childless items. FO uses black triangles (pointing to the right) for child-less items (and white ones for items that have children). This is very confusing, even after four weeks I still find myself trying to open these items. Another problem is the need to double click on an item to open/close it. In the Finder and most Mac outliners you open/close items with one click! Finally, many of the task icons (e.g. those for delete, find, replace, print) are very unusual. Although this is less confusing than the black triangles for childless items, it makes the software less usable than it could be. [alert admin]

InsulinDiaryX b3 (Mac OS X)

Promising, but currently useless

While I agree that the program is very promissing, I don't understand why people find it useful as it stands. Sure, the data entry interface is neat and clean and easy to use. However, the program does not enable me to extract the information I need to adjust my insulin scheme. As it stands the program is only a notebook and a small paper notebook is handier because you can carry that around and the data are more neatly arranged. The socalled summaries are merely listings. The program does not do statistics. There are no such things as graphs of an average day. There is no calculation of the amount of insulin needed per amount of carbs (for different times of the day). The program also lacks a feature, essential for pumpers, to insert a basic insulin scheme. [alert admin]

Beta Version

Posting beta versions is very confusing, especially if it is not clear from the version number. My App Update widget tells me that there is a new version available and in the screen of the widget is impossible to see that it is a beta version. Also, I can see what version I have and what the most recent version is, but if the most recent version is a beta one, I have no way…

Re: Not impressed

There also is a file "Instructions for Mac Users" that explains how to use the template on the Mac. The instructions assume that you are a pretty advanced Mac User though.
