Memtest 4.21 (Mac OS X)

Where's the source?

It's one thing to charge for the software, but as I understand it, this is open source software that he's modified, so any changes he makes to it are required to me made open source as well. By putting it behind a locked door (i.e. you don't get the source until you pay for it) he's breaking the license, last I checked. [alert admin]

iEatBrainz 1.06 (Mac OS X)

Great product

I've been using this thing for quite some time now, and it's come in handy with plenty of albums. What I've noticed is that quite often CDDB will return inaccurate data (or at the very least poorly formatted data) for the CDs I have, so before now I was forced to relabel them all by hand. Now though, I'm able to pop the CD in, import the tracks, then send it through MusicBrainz. Sure, as the last poster said it can have problems (it'll occasionally come back and say things like my track is from The Beatles when I really know that it's the opening theme to Wolf's Rain by Yoko Kanno) but with a little careful watching and a bit of patience this piece of software pays back in dividends. One gripe I have right now though is that it does seem to be incapable of handling tracks in iTunes that are already named using Japanese characters. It's able to name tracks using those characters just fine, but quite often when I run searches on tracks that already contain katakana and kanji it'll say that the "server encountered an error..." or something to that effect and I'll be forced to manually change the data to English before I can run my search again. Altogether though it does perform admirably, and it certainly managed to inspire me to get involved with MusicBrainz. [alert admin]

Tsunami 1.0 (Mac OS X)

It seems that we're in need of some reminders...

Look, guys, we obviously all have differing opinions on the matter, but let's make a few things clear: 1) Not all members of a country/race/society are represented accurately by a single person. Sweeping statements made against Americans or other groups are rather out of place since they seem to be based on one person's reaction to one other person or one person's perception of another group, and NOT on their personal interaction with many members of that other group. I'd appreciate it if you kept the America bashing to forums dedicated to that purpose and not carry it over into here since it has no place here. Likewise I'd hope that the Americans don't make any comments about any other nations. 2) What happened was a disaster. It was a catastrophe on a magnitude that none of us can even comprehend since we have never had to deal with anything else even remotely similar. We ALL agree on that, I'm assuming. Let's keep that in mind. 3) While passing moral judgment on an application before you even use it seems to be the hip and happenin' thing to do, I would suggest that you break from the norm and actually use the software before you comment on it. While I do agree that a program made solely for the purpose of keeping a death count would be rather tasteless and worth condemning, from what I understand, this application's purpose seems to be to make people realize and comprehend just how MASSIVE a tragedy this was and enable them to donate to the relief efforts. I'd hardly call that tasteless. Now, granted, I myself haven't used it yet (I'm only getting a speed of 1-2kb/sec on the download right now for some reason), but if it turns out that it IS just a death toll keeper and I think it's tasteless and crass, I'll be adding a comment underneath my post here saying as much. So look for that comment by some time tomorrow, and if you don't see it or you see me writing a glowing report (or a mediocre one, depending on what's called for) it means that the program may very well have been created by someone for humanitarian purposes rather than sensationalist purposes. 4) Regardless of anyone else's views, don't forget that we should all maintain a certain level of courtesy if for nothing else than to create a better environment for fellow netizens. Taking potshots at other people or insulting them is never a good idea. While I can understand the initial gut reaction to consider this application vulgar, I would point towards my #3 and encourage you to take a look at it before you pass judgment on it since I'm guessing that very few of you did so. Again, I'll try and post here tomorrow with my assessment of the program. Regards, --Anubis [alert admin]

Bullet 1.0 (Mac OS X)

Very fun

A safe and easy way to take out your frustration on your computer while still feeling relieved afterwards. Only suggestion I have is for there to be multiple images of bullet holes used instead of the same one over and over. Oh, and it makes some interesting sounds if you press the key combination to fire several time. [alert admin]

AdiumSchedule 0.3 (Mac OS X)

Good idea, could use some more functionality

This seems to me like a pretty good idea in general, and I like the fact that it's being upgraded so fast. Still though, it's lacking in a couple of features that I personally would consider necessary (though others might disagree), but that is to be expect at such an early stage of development, so take these following points as possible suggestions and not as demands or something. For one, I think you need to have the ability to select from away messages that you've created in Adium. I have over 30 away messages already created, and it'd be a LOT easier if I could just select from a pull-down menu rather than having to enter the text manually. Another thing it needs is the ability to add additional away messages to any group (so that you could have 4, 5, 6, 8, 10+ messages in a group), kinda like how the conditions for Smart Playlists are set in iTunes where you can press the add or subtract buttons to add or get rid of some of the fields. It'd also be nice if it could be set up on a daily basis (i.e. on Sunday is sets my "At Church" away message, on Monday it sets my "At school" message, on Tuesday it sets my "At work" message, etc etc). I know you could already get functionality like that by using the groups, but it'd be much nicer if it was explicitly built into the program in some way. Anyway, those are just my thoughts on what the app needs, but obviously you're only at v0.3, so I don't expect ANY of that at this point, I just think it'd be a good goal. I'd say that it looks like you have the core functionality in place and that it could end up being a truly useful application. Oh, and any chance you could switch the time selection from pull down menus to the standard text fields with the little up and down arrows next to them for increment and decrementation? BMI - Calculator 1.0 (v001) (Mac OS X)

'fraid i have to agree with the others

When I entered my data and pressed "Calculate" absolutely nothing happened. No ouput of any sort appeared. Now, I am running 10.2 at the moment, but honestly, on a program as simple as this, I don't see how the different OS version could really make a difference. It's not like you're making calls to Panther-specific libraries or something. Anyway, two things: first, it needs to work, but second, I'd like to see the ability to use American Standard units as well as metric. I know metric is the way of the future and all, but some of us aren't used to it yet. [alert admin]

gCount 0.3.2 (Mac OS X)

Yep

Yeah, mine just stopped working today as well. Didn't know if it was just me or some other problem. Anyway, guess I'll go take another look at that other GMail application. A shame too since I preferred this one when last I tried them both. [alert admin]

Neverball 1.3.6 (Mac OS X)

One of the best freeware games out there

Tried the game out for a few minutes, and already I'm rather impressed. The physics are generally pretty good and give the game a nice real feel, but I would say that the camera is a major problem in the game. The fact that it keeps spinning around the ball all the time makes it rather difficult to keep your ball heading in any one direction. I'd like to have the ability to lock the camera perspective or something. Other than that though, and the related difficulties with control, the games seems to be top-notch. Truth be told though, I actually preferred the other games that was included, NeverPutt, since it went at a pace that I enjoyed a bit more. Only problem with NeverPutt though, was that hole 16 is impossible to beat. There was some sort of an invisible wall or something right where the flat part turned into the arcing part. Made it impossible to get to the hole. Rather strange. [alert admin]

ProteusMenu 1.2 (Mac OS X)

It's ok, but that's about it

I've been using it for about a week now, and while it seems to at least be decent, I don't really see a reason to use it over the standard Proteus menu, and, in fact, I'd rather switch back but have been having some difficulty. It lacks a few of the menu items in the standard menu that I do use rather often (New Status being one of them), but on the flipside it's a bit more compact since it does have less items, and it includes a handy submenu with a list of all your contacts, making finding someone a simple task. I didn't really care for the bug that made all of my away messages disappear as choices in the menu, but that was easily remedied by selecting "Online"...they all reappeared after that. I also don't like the fact that I can't quit it. In fact, aside from actually removing every file and logging out, I know of no way to shut this thing off. VERY annoying. Anyway, I think it's ok, but I don't think it's anything great. [alert admin]

Desktop Manager 0.5.1 (Mac OS X)

Most excellent...

I was referred to this program by a friend when I mentioned that I was using Codec Virtual Desktop, and let me tell you now...between the ease of use and the gorgeous little features, I must say that I quickly changed over to this application. I mean, the transitions are beutiful beween the desktops are gorgeous, and, from what I can tell, barely effect the CPU at all. The features are a bit minimalistic, and, like the last reviewer, I too would like the feature to have certain applications always open up on their given desktops. Another nice feature would be the ability to arrange the desktops in various shapes, instead of just in a linear formation. Despite those two downsides though, the thing runs quickly, quietly, easily, beautifully, and best of all, it's free. A great contribution. Download it as soon as you can. [alert admin]

WARNING

Actually, last I checked it was not. Blizzard specifically prohibits the modification of game files by third-party applications, but not the passive reading of the data files. In fact, everything I've ever heard from them has always been to the contrary of what you said here. Do you have a source for your information?

Wheel reinvented

Konfabulator is renowned for having an exceptionally large footprint in memory and it can tend to eat up quite a bit of processing power as well. While I haven't used this software, maybe it is much less processor intensive? That alone might be reason for some people to use it. As for Dashboard...it's not out yet.

Obsession?

Actually, it's not so much an obsession for Mac users as it is for Windows users since they actually DO have a valid and good reason for defragging often. Since there have been enough switchers over the years though, they've naturally brought their practices over, and at one time there were tangible benefits to defragging a Mac as well, but now no one can really provide solid data one way or the other, except…

This company has some big problems

I think the problem he was having was NOT that he was being forced to log in in order to get help (which is perfectly reasonable), but rather that he could not figure out how to make an account even after being told that he had to log in (see his 4th step). He was being told that he needed an account to get help, but he needed help on figuring out how to…

Regarding their name

Just a quick comment...Motoko and Aramaki are two of the main characters from the anime franchise Ghost in the Shell. Their name is probably related to that...

If you're away ...

I, for one, always have my status set to Away, but I set different away messages depending on what I'm doing. Since I am Away but not away from my keyboard, having the ability to see the currently playing iTunes track could prove useful (though, in all honesty, I use X-Tunes for displaying the current track).

Awesome!

Yeah, I actually mentioned that same problem in one of my earlier commentaries on the game here. And how the heck did you get over it? I kept falling into the great abyss whenever trying to ricochet off of the curved part.

Most excellent...

Gah...excuse the poor spelling in the last comment. Shouldn't try typing on my laptop in the dark... Anyway, one other bug-like thing that I forgot to mention is that the "Move mouse pointer after switch" feature seems to not work. As far as I could tell, there was no difference between when I did and did not have that option selected.
