Notabene 2.5.2 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
I've tried using this product as I'm looking for something between Apple's built-in 'Note Pad' utility and the PIM software that synchs with my PDA. I'm currently using Personal Organizer and it's very good for the price but that is for my professional use. The free Memo Pad that's bundled with the Palm desktop is not a very useful app for me in it's layout. This product's user interface is not very well designed as it causes overlap with GoMac so that it is difficult to modify. Whenever I start messing around in the prefs, the program begins to react progressively slower until it crashes my Mac and the middle menu item causes an instant freeze. Usually I try to at least find something positive to say out of respect for the author's effort, but this one defies the lemon test as I couldn't figure out how to use it at all. My suggestion is, rather than downloading this one, keep a stack of index cards and a pen next to your keyboard. [alert admin]

Accordance 6.1.1 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)

There is a warehouse distributor on-line which carries a previous version of this product at a much better value. For only $5 more, you get this software plus an entire mini-library. What used to be called "MacBible" from Zondervan is now the "NIV Study Bible Library" and contains about a half-dozen titles. Two of these titles alone, the NIV Bible and Study notes have proven an invaluable asset to my ministry. I used the Accordance demo (which only contains the books of Genesis and Matthew) for about a month and find its features a vast improvement over the original MacBible which I have used for over 10 years now. I have also seen this title available at my local Bible bookstore as well, with at least the NIV plug-in included, at a comparable price. It is nice that some of the more obscure translations are free plug-ins, but I've never attended a church that uses these (it would be fun to follow along using my iBook). The more mainstream translations are nearly the same cost as the software and must be purchased seperately if obtained directly from OakTree. I find this extremely frustrating and a poor comparative value when other sources are considered. I hope that OakTree takes these concerns to heart as it used to be buying direct from the manufacturer was a way to get a better deal for the consumer. [alert admin]

FastWriter 1.1 (Palm OS)
Take this for what it's worth as I'm a satisfied owner of the competing product… As my title indicates, this is pretty much the same program as the excellent WordSmith, layout, design, feature set, price and all. One caveat I will make is that this program has two differing features to note which are major. The first is that it is Windows-only as far as the conduit and filemanager installation compatibility is concerned--since I use a Mac, this is a big thumbs-down for me. The second is that it can write to several different file types, including .txt--which is a feature I have been after the makers of WordSmith to adopt since before I purchased their product, which gives this a big thumbs-up in my opinion! Iambic has many other great products but their download process is such a headache. I would rather have a direct download than to have to send them my e-mail address so they can e-mail me the download link. Both WordSmith and FastWriter are fine products so it just depends on your personal preference. Since I already own the one I will not be buying the other, although I admit my opinion would likely be higher if I didn't start out in the graphics business and this product had come out first. I'm being honest in that I'm writing a comparison review. My review is my opinion. [alert admin]

FontBuddy 2.2.1 (Mac OS 9)
great for font designers, but it is very lacking for desktop publishers. All I need is a program that will print out a WYSIWYG sample line for all my fonts as well as multiple-sample sheet for each of selected fonts that a client might want. This product doesn't meet that need. There are other less expensive products available here that do that and more. [alert admin]

Font Pilot 1.1.7 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
design is not very intuitive. I work for a publishing business and need 2 types of sample sheets: first a list of capital and lower-case as well as numeric characters, one per line per font; and second a comprehensive layout of all characters and sizes of preferred fonts. I was unable to figure out how to accomplish these two requirements. The new shareware price is reasonably affordable although there are several more robust font viewer/stylesheet printers available here that are freeware. My review is my opinion. [alert admin]

Mariner Write 3.1.0B1 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
time limited beta so I decided to go to the developer's site to get the previous version. It refuses to unstuff and the headache is not worth the price tag to me. I thought that this would be an ideal alternative to AppleWorks since it advertises native handling of .rtf files. There is a product on the developer's site called "DocDrop" that I do give 5 stars to though. [alert admin]

Take Away! 2.4.2 (Mac OS 9)
Only a couple problems I found. For one, I noticed a problem between the controls on the bottom and the task bar for Action Utilities GoMac (a Windows-esque task bar). For another, I wish there was a speed difficulty adjustment for the times I just want to play a casual relaxing game rather than being forced to play at such a frenetic pace. With the price, if these two items get corrected, I will delete this and give it at least another star! [alert admin]

FontVista 2.5 (Mac OS 9)
since you can't print unless you pay first. There are a couple other programs here that do a better job of peerforming the same task. Granted some have less features but the price is less and at least you can test the program's printing feature (for the ones that aren't just font viewers). My personal favorite is one that is freeware and is highly customizable. Given that, I can't recommend this to my employer for my use. One star for higher price than similar alternatives and for being unable to test complete feature set. My rating is my opinion. [alert admin]

Password Retriever 4.1 (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X)
OSX at home or at work. Since we have several $1000 worth of publishing programs that work quite well with 9.2, my employer never saw the need to upgrade. I'm sure there are other end users who are either unable or unwiling to upgrade their OS to X and it is they whom I have written my review for. As far as being 100% compliant, I'm impressed as even OSX isn't 100% compliant. As far the cost is concerned, both my serial number and password database systen and my password generator were free (although in conceeding to you, they are separate). Concerning the file format, since the utility was written for systems other than OSX, I suggest the manual be in a format more readily accessable to the OS; perhaps .txt (or pdf)? BTW a true professional would never resort to insulting a potential client in response to a perceived insult. I merely expressed my opinions after spending some time evaluating a utility I thought I might find useful, but found too much room for improvement with the overall package from the user's perspective. Until I came back here and saw your reply, I'd actually considered giving this another star for effort upon further reflection. [alert admin]
