XScreenSaver 5.02 (Mac OS X)
For some reason the "problem" of mounting the .dmg image went away after rebooting the machine. So I have to say in all probability that the fault was in my system and not in the file as I originally thought. So now I can properly review this software. This is a great collection of xscreensavers. It reminds me of my early linux days and as such has many hard to find classics such as Xmatrix, BSOD, Hopalong, Hyperball and (my personal favorite Vermiculate. Lots of geeky screen fun packed in an convieniant .dmg file. I give it highest ratings. [alert admin]

XScreenSaver 5.02 (Mac OS X)
I've been waiting for somebody to release these. Takes me back to my first linux installation (on an original imac). There is a slight problem however: the .dmg file seems to be damaged. I could only open it on my iBook, with several attempts. It refused to open on my other mac (a Titainium powerbook). High points for the collection and the hope that the .dmg file gets replaced soon. Firefox 2.0.0.3 (Mac OS X)
After download/upgrade to 2.0.0.3 Firefox has slowed considerably. I'm running it on a G4 Powerbook and it crawls, I have no idea why so I won't offer any speculation. That said, I really like Firefox and I will continue to use it on my Linux box and recommend it highly to anyone running Windows. But, sadly, I am switching back to Safari on the Powerbook (at least for the time being...) I wish to thank the good folks at Mozilla for all their efforts and I look forward to seeing if this slowness issue is fixed in future releases. [alert admin]

Yojimbo 1.2 (Mac OS X)
Warning. Yojimbo "Known Issue"
Installing Yojimbo on your mac will permanently alter your sync settings. I installed Yojimbo to try it out and decided I didn't need it. After deleting the files I found that my .mac sync settings had a mysterious "com.barebones.yojimbo.yojimbodata" entry. I wrote to Bare Bones Software and this is what I got in reply: "The persistence of that entry in the .Mac sync panel results from a known issue with the current version of Mac OS X; please see the following article for details:" Followed by the faq entry: When Yojimbo is run for the first time, it lets the system know that it supports .Mac synchronization. Unfortunately, when any application that has done so is subsequently deleted, the system doesn't know to remove the application's registration from the .Mac Sync preferences UI. At this writing, there is no way to remove the item manually. "We have reported this problem to Apple. In the meantime, no damage has been done to your system, and while there's no way to remove the "stale" item, its presence in the .Mac Sync preferences won't interfere with .Mac synchronization of other data, nor will it cause any other problems with your system, so it can be safely ignored." Problem is, if they knew this would happen why didn't they post it in big red letters on their website? If I had known this I would never have installed Yojimbo on my mac - period. Now, according to them, this is a "cosmetic issue". But this doesn't cover for their neglect. I've used BBEdit for years and have respected this company's work. It's a big dissapointment. So I've posted this here for them - INSTALLING YOJIMBO WILL PERMANENTLY ALTER YOUR SYNC SETTINGS. Now its the user's decision to install it or not. [alert admin]

SoundandLights VIII 1.0 (Mac OS X)
OK... Now I'm really disgruntled... :P
It was woman's face... It took up the entire screen. The eyes moved around a bit from time to time. There was a sad midi electric piano playing in the background. I couldn't see my dock! I couldn't find an exit! And she kept staring at me with those jerky little eyes!. It totally creeped me out... I kept expecting the eyes to bug out and the teeth to turn to fangs and, well you know - BOO! April Fools/Happy Halloween! Muah ha haaa! I kept checking my hardrive for the sounds of files being whisked away or the tell tale signs of rootkit installation. The router didn't start flashing, Little Snitch didn't. Nothing happened at all. She didn't even ask me for a date... She just sadly faded away... Leaving me with only my cursor and empty desktop. I should have trusted her... But I am old and full of fear... [alert admin]

Hyperspace 1.0 (Mac OS X)
I contacted the developer and asked what was up with this. His reply was that he was having difficulties with the math portion of the port that assumes the CPU in question is "little endian". I'm not a programmer, so I can't help him debug this, but I have offered to beta-test any universal he would like to throw my way. Perhaps some of you who have complained here about "the lazy developer etc..." and seem to know something about programming should try to help? This is free software afterall and the programmer is happy to provide the source code. Until then this screen-saver is Intel-Only... [alert admin]

Camino 1.0 (Mac OS X)
First Impression. I was also surprised at the loading speed of this browser. I hadn't used it in a long time. What a shock! Compared to what I remember, it screams. Also, this is a big plus for me, it supports services so that I can paste directly from the webpage into another application, such as Circus Ponies Notebook. Does not have rss support but I don't miss it. That's what an rss reader is for. I'm tired of using bloatware. Camino feels light and fast. [alert admin]

Batz! Screensaver 2.0.2 (Mac OS X)
Disclaimer: I am a total bat fan. That said, this screen saver is quiet and enjoyable. I've noticed no bugs and the ability to use your own pictures as backgrounds is a great feature. You can have the moon, or not. You can choose between different types, and combinations, of bat. You can have cricket sounds and bat chirps, or not. You can have a few bats or a bunch. You can have fast, slow, or anything in between bats. What's not to like? Five dollars is a reasonable price for this. What do you expect Cinamascope (tm) with Dolby (tm)? Give the software provider a break here. If you feel you can do better, at a five dollar price, go for it. Otherwise just enjoy this fun and quiet little screensaver. [alert admin]

Blizzard Diablo II 1.11 (Mac OS X)
Installed the patch and now it freezes up when the player is loading. Had to log in with a different computer and do a terminal kill pid to get control of my machine back. I would stay away from this patch. [alert admin]

I've used one version of this software or another for the past year or so. Sorry to say, I wasted my time and money. The software simply does not perform as advertised. In fairness I am relatively new to MIDI, (though not to computers or music). I've had some good help though, from some experienced folks, and they can't figure out this mess either. 1. Persistent bugs in the way it handles midi. 2. Will only access GM samples and no support for Roland, (that I can tell). 3. Nonresponsive technical support. (ie they don't answer email)* 4. Bad documentation. *Note: I've been very polite. I have had to put my project on hold until I can afford to buy replacement software. This has been a big disappointment for me. [alert admin]

Yes... Makes me homesick as well. I miss the old white stone towers and silent seas of my homeworld. People were nicer there as well. I would give this software, and your brilliant review, two thumbs up but I have somehow misplaced them in a drawer somewhere...

"... toolbar icons just look clunky ..." There are so many themes to choose from in Firefox I'm sure you'll find something you like. Personally I'm fond of "Pinball". It's clean and cheerful and leaves lots of room for web content. You can download and install themes by selecting Tools/Themes. You can also select View/Toolbars/Customize and check the "Use Small Icons" option to further reduce the icon size. As far as bugs, personally the few bugs I've…

Some programmers ask for donations, others for postcards. The developer of this package has chosen that you voluntarily read a page of his political views. No one has forced you to read it. No one expects you to agree. If it bothers you this much why not follow through on your principles and not use this software at all. After all it would be pretty hypocritical of you to complain so bitterly and still enjoy…

Then perhaps you shouldn't call him an idiot. Just point out the error and spare us the ego.
