1Password 2.9.31 (Mac OS X)
This program is astounding. It truly works. It has been flawless in managing my hundreds of passwords. I can even sync my passwords now between my two computers using Dropbox (recommended by the developer). It is easy to set up, easy to use and totally stable. The documentation is first class. The website is first class. The price is well worth the peace of mind. Even the new Beta 3 version is flawless with Snow Leopard. These guys have set a high bar for other developers. It just does not get any better. Now, how can we get this developer to take on personal finance and investment management and knock Intuit out of the park? [alert admin]

Get Backup 2.2.1 (Mac OS X)
I was given a copy of Get Backup in return for doing a review. Unfortunately, it failed twice to complete a simple backup of my 10.5 GB Documents folder to a backup drive. Since it will not perform a simple backup for me, my review will be short - It did not work. The appeal of this program is that it allows you to backup any folder and use any backup media. I like that feature a lot. It also supports synchronizing multiple drives or folders so that they have the same versions. It will not create a bootable backup. On the surface, it looks like a nice, simple, intuitive backup program. The main screen seemed easy to understand and allows one-click setup for backing up iTunes, Mail and iPhoto libraries and your Documents folder. I tested it by attempting to backup my documents folder and, separately, my iPhoto library. After 21 minutes of using 45-75% of my CPU, it gave me an error message saying the backup had failed. After 3 attempts, I quit. I did not attempt to synchronize anything. In contrast, for example, SuperDuper uses less than 2% of my CPU and takes less than 3 minutes to perform an incremental backup of my entire 102 GB harddrive and it has never failed in the 3+ years I've owned it. My conclusion is that BeLight Software has a potentially good product, but it needs more work to be a real competitor. [alert admin]

RCDefaultApp 2.0.1 (Mac OS X)
NOT Compatible with Snow Leopard
This was a nice pref pane, but it has not been updated to work with Leopard or Snow Leopard. No visible way to communicate with the developer. Too bad... [alert admin]

1Password 2.9.18 (Mac OS X)
I've used 1Password for about 6 months (and a "Mac" user for 25 years). It is without a doubt, one of the finest pieces of software on my computer now. It handles all of my password needs with ease. It also handles most of my online data entries like submitting contact info or all credit card info for purchases. It's instantly accessible in the menubar of Safari and Firefox. And I like that I can easily use one pretty complex master password for all of this critical data. Great product! [alert admin]

Smart Scroll 3.0b2 (Mac OS X)
I disagree with these negative comments about APE. I've been using APE for at least 12 years and have never, not even once, had an issue with any of their software. I view their Fruitmenu and Windowshade utilities as two of the MOST useful, MOST essential productivity utilities ever. I've also never had a problem contacting their tech support nor with transitions to new Apple OS upgrades. I have not yet tried SmartScroll, but as far as I'm concerned, Unsanity is at the top of the pile of developers. [alert admin]

Retrospect 8.0b4 (Mac OS X)
It works OK on a single computer, but why use it at all? It took me years to become comfortable with how Retrospect worked and how to sort out the frequent networking breakdowns. Since the newer versions don't seem to work at all, I hardly use it any more. There are much easier to use and more reliable backup programs like SuperDuper and Apple's Time Machine. The interface has not been improved since it was first designed. And, as far as I can tell, this latest versikon does not work over a network. The clients are not recognized in the backup process. The last version that worked for me on my Ethernet network was ver 6.1. [alert admin]

1Password 2.9.3 (Mac OS X)
1Password has become an indispensable utility for me. It manages over 230 web login ID's and Passwords for me. It is easy to setup and easy to maintain. I hardly needed to refer to the support documentation. The developer is available and responsive to questions. The price is very fair. Before 1Password, I kept my passwords on a 14 page, single spaced document that I would haul out every time I needed to "remember" a password. Now, 1Password does that work for me and does it very reliably. I still keep my document as backup, but I hardly refer to it anymore. What a time saver! [alert admin]

Captain FTP 5.0030 (Mac OS X)
I've relied on Captain FTP for more than 4 years. It is a very good and easy to use ftp client. I especially like the 2-column view panel and the drag-and-drop capability. [alert admin]

I too have been a very long-term user of VersionTracker Pro. And, I completely agree with your comments. The CNET TechTracker is a huge downgrade and, frankly, unacceptable substitution for a program that really worked pretty well. After trying the beta version for a month on 3 different computers, I am convinced - it is really poor. Constant mis-matches and wrong data. I am moving on. I have subscribed to MacUpdate's new Desktop program and…

Works fine on my MacBook Pro. Try running some cleanup tasks via Mainmenu or SN Cache Cleaner. And, I ran Disk Warrior on mine - it definitely found some issues after installing SN.

Leopard is OS 10.5 and Fruitmenu works fine with it. Fruitmenu does NOT work with Snow Leopard. What a shame. It is a terrific productivity utility.

As I have come to understand ClamXA/V, it seems to work fine, but various people have claimed (with some authority behind their claim), that this program is way behind and is NOT updated with the most current malware.

I'm still using an older version of Retrospect (Ver 6.1.230) with Client Ver 6.1.130 on OS 10.5.5. It works. It only turns off after restarting the Client computer, not when it goes to sleep. If recent update to the Client software turns itself OFF after the computer goes to sleep, it's not working. Is that what everyone is experiencing on Leopard?? Is there a more recent version of Retrospect and the Client software than mine that…

I completely agree with these comments. I too paid for this software and I too use Firefox 3. It's now 6 months after Ver 3.75 was released and It really irks me that the developer still declines to update Bookit to work with Firefox. I also agree with the illogical interface. And, I too don't like the arrogant, snotty attitude of the developer. It's time to move on...
