Tetris Zone 1.2.1 (Mac OS X)

Big Bang Theory, or Big Brother?

I discovered Tetris Zone after noticing that the guys on The Big Bang Theory were playing what looked to be a real Mac OS X Tetris app in the episode "The Peanut Reaction". You can see the app name in the window titlebar and the bottom left corner of the window on Raj's computer, so a quick search and voilą. But I echo the other reviewer - unless an internet connection is central to an application's core functionality (eg: torrent client, web browser), there is no excuse for the rather demeaning necessity to have to ask every time for permission to run an app you have already bought. ("Mother, may I?") It looks like a good app. But I won't buy it. Check out Quinn for a free Tetris with both internet and stand-alone modes (and a free tool to set up your own server). Or go somewhere else, buy something else. But not this. [alert admin]

Microsoft Silverlight 2.0.40115.0 (Mac OS X)

Automatically downloads and installs updates

Note that Silverlight, by default, not only checks for newer versions of itself (which is typical for most apps) but actually downloads and installs them. You have to change it to "check but let me choose". http://www.microsoft.com/Silverlight/resources/Privacy.aspx?v=1.0 Presumably you're going to get a Mac OS X admin authentication dialog, but still. RDC 0.4.4 (Mac OS X)

CoRD is better

Get CoRD instead. It works immediately, is easy to use, plenty of features and options, and is even better than Microsoft's official client.

Yahoo! Messenger 3.0b4.156957 (Mac OS X)

At least they're still working on it.

They abandoned YM around version 2.5, and this 3.0 beta thing's been going on for almost 2 years. But at least when you compare it to the original 3.0 beta, it's made some progress. There's audio AND video, and can make calls, supports SMS (in some countries) and mobile devices. Which could not be said for MSN (seriously, no significant new features since version 3.0, or even earlier!?) or AIM, the latter of which has only just been picked back up and still doesn't replicate the feature list of even the 5 year old version 4.7; it took Apple to give Mac users any kind of AIM advancement. And let us not even speak of ICQ; we're approaching 6 years of abandonment - nuff said. In recent versions I've noticed it's stopped crashing every time I log out or quit, so that's some progress. So, it may be damning YM with faint praise, but of the major official IM service clients, YM is at least conscious, while the others are in comas or, in ICQ's case, rotting in a drawer in the morgue. Intego NetBarrier X5 10.5.3 (Mac OS X)

RUN the other way...as fast as you CAN!

I say NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, EVER use anything Intego. I am still trying to determine if, especially, Intego TEXAS is composed of the biggest bunch of rude crooks I have ever encountered or not. Pure evil? Read on to discover what else I think. I recently emailed INTEGO regarding PROBLEMS with Intego NetBarrier X5 software, etc., and have yet to get a response. I even emailed the corporate headquarters in France and they do not even, it seems to me, have decency and respect enough for their own customers to respond to issues. These are the same Intego software problems that I attempted to address with Intego suppport a month ago. The so called "fixes" Intego support(Texas location) gave a month ago simply wasted my time. However, I did not contact Intego again until I did more "research". I have now done that and can not escape the conclusion that Intego NetBarrier X5 software is the problem. Yet, apparently, and somewhat confusingly, Intego support(Texas location) has proven itself to be, probably, the worst such "so called" software support representatives I have ever had the displeasure of speaking with. I have more than one email from Intego support(Texas location) where they have simply sent me the WRONG or incorrect information. I am not even the tech support guy, yet Intego's glaring error was obvious to me. On another occasion I called, after losing 30 something hours of sleep trying to resolve problems created by Intego's apparent ineptitude or incompetence, I am not sure which, and an Intego TEXAS representative told me, in response to my very specific description of the NetBarrier X5 issue, that "something must...went HAYWIRE". Can you imagine such a statement from someone who has the audacity to call himself or herself tech support??? On 2 other occasions, including the FIRST time I ever called about the NetBarrier X5 problems, I kept calling and asking for Intego tech support Texas location and it was literally hours after Intego tech support was supposed to be on duty before, apparently, Intego Texas' "so called" tech support finally arrived. I am still scratching my head wondering if Intego Texas tech support EVER gets to the office, or whatever they might be using as an excuse for one, anytime earlier than 2PM. ? I ATTEMPTED to explain, virtually step by step, the Intego NetBarrier X5 issues and how I know the problem is the Intego software yet Intego support, either, interrupted me, or never let me give the details, with statements that make no sense to me whatsoever. For instance, statements LIKE...we do not have an owner or company executive and...if your Leopard version is 10.5.4 or 10.5.5 then you should not expect Intego software to work. Just today I ended a telephone conversation with Intego representatives(Justin, Joel; Texas) who indicated they have NO OWNER or SUPERIOR. ???? I feel very strongly that Intego has revealed itself to me as a horrible software company and I can not quite escape the conclusion that I am somewhat obligated to inform consumers virtually every chance I get. I can not remember a time when I have spoken with software representatives, like those I have spoken with at Intego TEXAS, who have such extraordinary ENMITY toward the very consumer(s) who buy their products. I plan to make my feelings clear at every opportunity to do so that presents itself. In other words, use firewall and antivirus but NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, use Intego products. Are there a bunch of crooked creeps at Intego TEXAS? I think you might have just read my mind! How could I feel otherwise? What possible opinions and conclusions, other than the ones I have expressed here, could I possibly arrive at? Particularly disgusting is the fact that Intego TEXAS tried to convince me that my computer has "SERIOUS" problems. The serious problem on my computer was Intego NetBarrirer X5 after a "so called" filter update. While it was on my computer after that update it crashed(kernel panic) every 2 days like "clockwork". After various SPECIFIC means of troubleshooting to further pinpoint the issue, including running Leopard and the offending software from external volumes(hard drives), I have not had one single crash(kernel panic) SINCE I REMOVED that "so called" updated Intego software. Am I still running a third-party firewall, then? Of course I am. I am also running antivirus. I am just not running Intego. ...use firewall and antivirus but NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, use Intego products. That is what I say. [alert admin]

Xbox Live Friends 4.0 (Mac OS X)

Excellent interface

The best of the Friends apps, although it seems to quit expectedly every ten minutes. Also, auto-login only works about half the time. Sending messages without turning on my Xbox is awesome. Please fix the stability and I would gladly pay! [alert admin]

RSS Menu 1.11.6 (Mac OS X)

This application eats a lot of RAM

Seriously, the RAM issue on this application needs to be fixed. It's inexcusable that this much RAM would be used for such a simple task. I agree with the other users that this is a good application, but too much RAM is being sacrificed from other processes for this thing. [alert admin]

Phex 3.4.2.116 (Mac OS X)

If you must...

The entire Gnutella network is a game of Russian Roulette - with a 200 shot cartridge, 199 live bullets and one blank. Find another way to get the files that you need. Bittorrent is self-regulating, and is far less prone to fakes, viruses and other garbage. It's not immune, but they're usually caught much faster, and by following a few simple rules (eg: never download a RAR), you can easily avoid problems. However, if you MUST use Gnutella (with Phex or another client), before you start finding your files, do the following: 1. Perform a search for a long string of random characters. Just hit the keyboard randomly, eg: fd&&Ikjfkjsh2dsihfssk 2. For any results that occur (eg: "[the above] Keygen.exe", "[the above] full album.zip"), ban the host. In Phex, it's in the contextual menu. Use the "unlimited" ban option. 3. Repeat 4 or 5 times There are file sharers out there that are desperate for you to get a malware infection, to give you porn instead of a real file, or to just *censored* you over. Find them and ban them. Spend 15 minutes doing this before you start using the program. And every few days, or at least once a week, repeat the process again to catch the *censored*ers. HOWEVER, the best advice anyone can take when looking at the Gnutella network is AVOID. Learn Bittorrent, find reputable torrent sites (there are plenty), and make the switch from the 90s dark ages into the present day. As far as Gnutella programs go, Phex seems to be pretty good. It's easy to use, launches and operates cleanly, it's pretty Mac-like, considering it's a cross-platform open-source app. It's just that the technology it sits on (the Gnutella network) is old, insecure, completely abused and riddled with landmines. OO on PPC NOT dead -- you can help

Whether or not you think that PowerPC outnumbers Intel or vice-versa is largely immaterial. There are two major personality types out there - those who stick with what is reliable and what they know, and those who look for the next big thing. The fact that there are still plenty of PowerPC machines out there, <b>3.5 years</b> after the switch, the PowerPC users are less likely to be looking to switch to a completely new…

It leverages TextEdit

As with their PDF plug-in, the Word plug-in doesn't itself add the ability to view Word files. It uses the system frameworks used by TextEdit, since TextEdit can open the same files. That's how PDF plug-in works - it leverages the same renderer used by Preview to display PDFs. So in both cases, the content will only be as good as TextEdit or Preview themselves would display. They essentially embed TextEdit and Preview into the browser…

Where's version 11.5.o.595?

What on earth are you talking about? 11.5.0.595 IS 11.5r595. It's different ways of expressing the exact same thing. The last number is the build number. It changes more often than any of the other digits. Apple doesn't count like 10.5.2, 10.6.2, 10.7.2, and neither does Adobe.

Open Office IS PowerPC

The only reason there's no official 3.0 release version of Open Office is because they have not received enough feedback of the 3.0rc4 for them to declare it ready for prime-time. If you want Open Office 3.0 for PowerPC, get the 3.0rc4 and send them feedback.

New look for FireFox V3 and up

Firefox 2.0 is only surpassed by Firefox 1.0 in terms of being un-Mac like. Why would you want to go back to the hacked-up pseudo unsuccessful fakery of 2.0 and below? I mean, skin the damn thing if you must, but at least Firefox 3.0's default appearance looks like it belongs on a Mac. It has better inline widgets (Aqua instead of flat no-platform controls) and it complies with Apple UI guidelines much better (still…
