I am in the same situation/version 10.4.11 as you for the same reason... and am using MacTubes - 2.3 perfectly well for the same purpose... downloading videos from YouTube that are of interest to my family.

Mac OS 10.5.8 is way stable. I couldn't do without some of the cool Leopard features like QuickView.

And I'm on an eight year old G4.

Upgrade to Snow Leopard! It works just fine on my first-gen MacBook with 10.6.1 running.
