I follow you up to the point where you suggest that I should go to Device Manager. There is no such option in my prefs pane.
However Eureka! - I have just spotted what you're referring to! You're talking about the menu bar and there is indeed a MENU called Device Manager which has an About option in it.
Well here are my comments on this - firstly, why can't the version information be simply displayed in the prefs pane where it can easily be seen. That was my basic point. Secondly, it is not at all obvious that what the Configure button does is to actually launch a separate application called Device Manager. This is not standard behaviour for a prefs pane and I am not at all surprised that I didn't see that it was happening. What I thought was happening is that the prefs pane had simply spawned a separate window - that's what it seems like and I'm sure that is what most people think is happening...
