For apps with versions for both architectures (Intel and PPC), I usually check the author's website to make sure that I get the right one.
In Adobe's case, Reader for Mac updates are found by clicking the Support drop-down menu from the Adobe.com home page, then choosing Updates. From there, select "Adobe Reader - Macintosh". That gives you the entire gamut of Reader updates dating back to v6.0.
