It's a BETA - GNJ
Which means it is unproven, possibly buggy -- put out there by the developer to "shake out" any problems that may not be evident to him/her. Most developers don't have the full range of hardware/ installed program assortments that we have. They also don't have our eyeballs and mindsets. Soooo -- they use us to help polish the product by releasing a beta.If you choose to use a beta, you should be willing to accept the risks involved **AND** the obligation to communicate with the developer.
It sounds like you either don't understand "beta" --- or you don't have the where-with-all do deal with them.
Stick to final stable releases --- those without a "b" in the version -- ;)

Okay, I now officially hate Transmission - alphacentarilarious
I haven't yet finished downloading a whole file but I did experience "delay" when quitting Transmission as this commenter suggests. However, I waited a while, it seemed like a long while as whiles do when one is waiting. My guess it was less than ten minutes however and the program did quit.
I observed via iPulse that the communications were still active during the quitting of Transmission. I've seen the same sort of thing with peer-to-peer on XP using Limewire. It seems like the internet just does not want to give up though that is probably whatever little subroutine the programs use.
So my advice is be patient.
Sometimes I wait up to half an hour for other OSX "delays" to complete and usually my patients wins. Seldom do I force quit or force shutdown for many of the non-beach ball delays that give the appearance of an operation hanging.
Utilities such as iPulse and Activity Monitor go a long way to help one be patient but you have to have them running all the time, as I do, in order to see what might be going on. And they still don't help during and "extended" shutdown or restart. They also consume resources especially when on the rapid update settings.
Unfortunately not everything is light-switch speed.... yet.
As far as Transmission goes I like the way it works for the limited use I've given it. It starts up nice from where it left off when Quit. And the settable speed limit override is nice. Though I'd like see it go into speed limit override based upon whether the user had been inactive for a set number of minutes.
Checking the Peers window I also see lots of Transmission users out there and is the most popular program currently in use.

Okay, I now officially hate Transmission - s.elings
A LEOPARD PROBLEMFrom the Transmission forums I've understood that these very serious problems are a Leopard issue: there are zero reports of this on Macs running Tiger or Panther. The Quick Look server in Leopard apparently gets confused trying to index the torrent files while they're still downloading.
A suggested fix is to instruct Spotlight NOT to index the Downloads Folder: System Preferences >> Spotlight >> Privacy >> add Download Folder.
I recently upgraded to Leopard and was wary to continue using Transmission because of the many horror stories. Decided to try it anyway after exempting my DownloadsFolder from Spotlight indexing. Experienced no problems. ( OSX 10.5.6)

You should visit the Transmission forums for help on troubleshooting. I myself prefer an older version (1.22) as it is rock solid on my system. Nobody is forcing you to use the newest version. I suggest finding an older version that works best for you and periodically check the newer versions to see if they work for you. For me this is the best option considering that the rest of the Bittorrent applications for the Mac are a joke.Reply to This
