No, no, no. It's not an alpha release. VLC uses letters for expressing version iterations w/r/t bugfix releases. Version 0.9.9a is the same as saying v0.9.9.1. v0.8.6, for instance, went from 0.8.6a --> 0.8.6b --> all the way to 0.8.6i. It's just a naming convention, and yes it isn't all that logical to use letters, because this kind of confusion inevitably results...
