A follow-up: Vuescan (the Professional version) 'just worked' on my (Ethernet) networked HP C7280. The scanner is NOT directly attached to my Mac, but rather to a router. Moreover, Vuescan on a laptop also immediately detected the networked scanner over a wireless connection.
In both cases the scanner appears as "HP Net Scanner". So I'm somewhat mystified about MacInTalk Pro's difficulties.
