SMART will only report a failure in advance about 70% of the time. Some failures. It's not a perfect system and has nothing to do with this software.

SMART is not exactly that 'smart'. It's something, but not everything. Wikipedia.org has good coverage of what it can and cannot do.

Personally, I occasionally perform separate tests on my hard drives every now and then. Note that I am a utility freak.
- TechTool Pro is very good at testing hardware, including further aspects of hard drives.
- Drive Genius is very good with even more in depth hard drive testing.
- SpeedTools is reasonable as well.

ATM I'd suggest Drive Genius over the others specifically for hard drive testing, sector test and repair, as well as volume verification.
