There might be an issue - I too have problems.
Transmission has always been rock solid and rules the universe in general but since 1.5* it crashes on startup So I rolled back to 1.42 wich works fine.

Might be installation dependant: G5 Quad, 10.5.6

There has always been a SLOW death of Some OSX 10.5 users Macs when using transmission. Its allways been possible to kill OSX 10.5 completely With Transmission.
The problem is well posted about on their forums.
For some users like you. its random with each update With other users like me its permanent bug on the app and the app can't be used. due to the complete Crash/freeze. Due to the HOLE Mac system freezing/crashing NO bug reports are realy possible. Those who do survive the app, have completely different specs to each other and no Other torrent app causes this error.
The developers are stuck in a loop with this bug on Mac.
