got a reply from support@fontexplorerx.com which looks very much like the used a keyword scanner on my email and automatically generated a response that addressed anything that might relate to those keywords

i have disabled Pro's login items and returned to FontExplorer X 1.2.3; all my sets are still there ...

Why not use Time Machine and go back to the free app? Probably best to un-install this new version using AppCleaner.
