Who the hell is leading this project? - K.K.T.

Indeed. It's annoying that it won't let you specify where VLC is (you MUST have it in /Applications. It doesn't even look in the current directory.

And I haven't been able to get this version to even finish scanning a DVD (on a new MBP). It just doesn't work at all. Disappointing.

Ok, so you're complaining about what appears to be (downloading now...) a phenomenal update because they have separate Intel and PPC binaries and because DVD decryption is gone? Seriously???

Separate binaries are great. I don't have a PPC box, so why do I want all that extra code on my hard drive? And there may well be strong technical reasons for this decision. But it's such a NON-ISSUE in the first place.

As for losing DVD decryption, I think it's pretty obvious why. There's a legal reason. They don't need to explain it. So download VLC, drop it into your Applications folder, and don't worry about it. Again, non-issue.

Finally, I agree that dropping 10.4 support is stupid and should only be done if there's a compelling technical reason. Not having a 10.4 install up and running does seem rather odd. I would think that any developer would want to support at least the previous major OS version.

I'm looking forward to testing out the new capabilities right now! :)

re: beggar who wants to be chooser - Jon_Link_871

Not professional? It is free software mister. The people doing it are likely doing it as a labor of love. Have you considered that they don't have dev machines? Should one of the dev's be forced to keep 10.4 loaded on their personal computer just so you can save money and not upgrade?

Another person responded well to your other grievances.

If there was an exchange of money for services and support you'd have a leg to stand on, but you don't. Quit being a pissant.

This is a great program which I find very useful. It is free. If you don't like how it is being run then move along.

I'm sure your helpful, supportive comments will be a great inspiration to the developers to improve their product to meet your needs.

1. 0.9.1 is still available for download for 10.4 users on the dowload page. (Link right down the bottom of the page). It is not supported and this was announced *Months* ago. HandBrake is not a company. There is no money in it. It is completely unrealistic to expect an OS project to maintain support for something they don't themselves use. There is nothing unprofessional about that.

2. Maybe there is a good reason for no longer providing Universal binaries? Say bandwidth limitations? All bandwidth for the project is donated and is a finite resource that has to be managed carefully. It would be unresponsive not to. Less than 10% of the userbase uses PPC, so what sense is there in having the majority of the userbase downloading a binary that is almost double the size? It'll nearly double the amount of bandwidth required to provide binaries.

3. That's your choice. The stance of the development team has been made clear.

Particularly treating development machines as personal boxes.

Perhaps their development machines ARE their personal boxes too? As FREE software developers maybe they don't have the resources to keep multiple Macs running multiple versions of OS X on them?

Feel free to offer the use of your Macs for testing purposes.

So now they have separate Intel and PowerPC versions. Seriously, WTF?

Since a Mac is either one or the other - not both - it doesn't really matter does it? Instead of clicking one link to download, you click another. Is that too complicated for you? Plus, you have a smaller download.

And now DVD decryption requires VLC. For some reason that has not been explained, just to complicate things.

It doesn't complicate anything! If you have VLC installed, Handbrake continues to work as before to the end-user. If you don't have VLC just install it. Is that complicated for you?

What the hell is going on with this project, and what fool is steering it?

Well, if you can do a better job - feel free to offer your services. That's what open-source community-based projects are all about. If you don't want to help, SHUT THE FU!

the developers are unprofessional. That's one of the downsides of open-source, I suppose.

Well, at least these developers are actually contributing something great to the Mac community, that ALOT of people like. What have you done except complain?

If you don't like it, like the development, organisation or whatever, feel free to get involved in the project and improve it with your superior methods and ideas. If you can do a better job, then everyone will benefit. Don't just come here and moan about it.
