Only it works a little differently: hold down option while widening the columns and all the other windows' columns change, too. No need to click on the finder icon: you're adjusting the default as you adjust the column.
In 10.4, it's still the option key with no need to click the finder icon. However, the column sizes in other open windows don't change at the same time.
