I get the "seemingly random auto-activating fonts" problem too, but none of the slow downs or corruptions issues.

Had to downgrade. - skviki

I found that the auto activation plugin for illustrator was causing the slowdown. I removed the new plugin and replaced it with the old one and it works without problems.
