syrinx bad name choice - Richard Samul

The syrinx is also the vocal organ of a bird, consisting of thin vibrating muscles at or close to the division of the trachea into the bronchi.

And, "Cancer" is also the name of a zodiac sign and a constellation - both of which had their names long before the disease. Should we accuse the ancients of making a bad name choice? I, for one, am proud to be a Cancer.

syrinx bad name choice - mrrsoftware

Actually, it is named Syrinx for two reasons: One, because it's the bird equivalent of a laryinx, and therefore it literally is where tweets come from, and secondly syrinx is another name for pan pipes(as shown in the icon), named for the nymph who was turned into hollow reeds to avoid Pan's pursuit.

syrinx bad name choice - neuromama_dotmac

As a veterinarian, when I saw the name syrinx, I went absolutely bonkers! I did not know what to think! Is it the spinal cyst or the voice organ of a bird???? I was finally released after spending 4 months in an institution (where I was not allowed to handle any sort of sharp object)! How dare you name software that makes veterinarians go insane!

To all you medical know-it-alls... - stam

FYI, the "syrinx" in Syringomyelia is ancient greek for "pipe", hence it's use in both contexts.
